From there it became known as a Falcon.
Happy to be corrected though.
Former Souths and Norths nrl player Mario Fenech was known as the Maltese Falcon (he's actually from Malta). Once in his last season when he was playing for the disgustingly bad South Queensland side, he was walking to the bench for a spell, and in an incident that summed up how bad they were, the dummy half sent a perfect left to right spiral pass into fenech's head which he didn't even see.
When he retired and took up a career as the whipping boy on the footy show, they smashed him deluxe. They'd play footage of it every week. It grew into a segment where he'd award a falcon of the week/year etc.
