Scully was told he just doesn't have that competitive mongrel and work ethic they want. They tried to get it out of him, but he didn't exhibit it and they don't believe he will make it based on that. To be honest, looks like he'll just be the next Redden, Mitch Harvey type, that will probably go onto have a good SANFL career but just might not have been up to AFL.

You hear about a guy like Logan Evans who comes in on off days with the Iceberg as a MSD rookie. It's impressive.

Absolutely. Scully is/was an exciting prospect. Can kick and mark. Rucking improved markedly this year. Watching him from the start to the almost dejected, lacking in confidence player v Centrals at Elizabeth last round is all on Hinkley and our "elite football program".

I know Atkins has been added to our list but I wouldn’t call him a recruit.
He was part of a total package.
Either way Boak should have definitely played his last AFL game against Sydney.
This club has become so soft over the years.
We dumped Russ Ebert as coach because he couldn’t win a flag within a couple of years and now we keep coaches and players that should have been outed years ago.

Kicking goals are overrated at Alberton.

I’d say mongrel is more important for a guy that will be wrestling big key defenders than an agile goalsneak

Do we really need an elite football program to motivate an up & coming player ? I’m not saying it doesn’t help, but a player needs to want it bad and do above and beyond to get a list spot.

I think if you are the type of player that Scully is, which is more of a Dixon type “put it on my head and ill outmark the opposition” type, then i’d say mongrel - meaning absolute hatred of losing a contest and having self belief that you will absolutely mark the ball when its coming in - is a non negotiable. If you arent outmarking SANFL dedenders who were probably 10cm shorter than him, then he isnt going to make it wrestling the Andrews, Mckays, Weiterings, Barrass’s of the afl world who are bigger, stronger, fitter etc

End of the day he kicked 20 goals in 18 games and averaged under 3 marks a game. Took 9 contested marks in 18 games. Noted, he was playing in a shitheap, but he wasnt knocking down the door of selection and those stats are going to put you in danger.

Having said that, i would have still kept him for another year

Absolutely we really need an elite football program to motivate an up and coming player. It should encompass the training of physical and mental attributes. It's a ridiculous decision to delist Tom.

Hipwoods taken nearly 280 marks the last two years. Hes mobile, quick, agile, gets seperation and plays as a CHF. Amartey is someone i’d rate on the lower end of the talent spectrum but is clearly getting the most out of himself. If the query over Scully is he lacks the mongrel/desire to get the best out of himself, he won’t reach near what Amartey has done.

Its the way we are willing to keep players with mongrel even if they are lacking in any other hurt factor in their game whatsoever.

In the end defence is a non-negotiable and I get that, but you will always have players who have different skillsets. The problem we have is we focus so much on mongrel and end up needing to work 10x harder every game because of it (as opposed to having players that can just efficiently lead out take marks slot goals) meaning we're blown up by finals year in year out.

The issue with our depth is that Hinkley prefers to play middling veterans to genuine spuds to unaccountable older players at the expense at trying younger players.

There were 44 games handed out to McEntee, Narkle and Evans, two of which were delisted and Jed being saved by his contract.

It’s reminiscent of 2019, when all the messaging in the smouldering aftermath of the Ben Brown Bowl disaster was how we have the 4th-youngest list, as we put 100+ games into Sam Gray (delisted), Ryder (traded), Howard (traded), Broadbent (retired), Westhoff (last legs), Ebert (last legs) & Sutcliffe ().

When almost all your KPP's are drafted late you aren't going to get the complete package of skills. Sure ideally you want skills in front of goals AND applying defense when you don't have it. The issue is for forwards, when it's a choice between players with either the former or latter, it should be the former that's picked. We get the latter and the forward line has run as smoothly as a dehydrated 80 year old with constipation.

The idea is that you can develop skill level over time but it's much harder to develop a willingness to compete and give relentless effort. Anyone who has played sport at any level will know there are people who sort of compete and people who actually compete - and you won't survive at AFL level as a sort of compete type unless you are extremely high on skill and natural talent.

How was he lucky to be drafted? He kicked 50 goals in Westies U18s, and was Port Magpies leading goal kicker this year at 19 years of age.

Easy to kick lots of goals in u18 when you are 8 ft tall. Our forward stocks in the magpies who played every game was very little. The reality is that the gap between SANFL and AFL is massive, especially for a key position player, and they clearly do not see potential in him, to delist him after 2 seasons.
