I'm not saying that mongrel and work ethic isn't important but we always do this. We focus on guys with mongrel who can make tackles and apply pressure, and never focus on guys that can take marks and slot goals. Its why guys like Scully get de-listed while forwards like S Gray and McEntee end up 100 gamers for us. We never look at the whole package - its also a reason why so few talls develop for us.Scully was told he just doesn't have that competitive mongrel and work ethic they want. They tried to get it out of him, but he didn't exhibit it and they don't believe he will make it based on that. To be honest, looks like he'll just be the next Redden, Mitch Harvey type, that will probably go onto have a good SANFL career but just might not have been up to AFL.
"You don't defend, you don't play" was the third thing Hinkley said after "I'm the right man standing" and "You get what you deserve". Such an oracle.I'm not saying that mongrel and work ethic isn't important but we always do this. How much mongrel did Luke Breust have? Very little but he's a 3x premiership player and 2x AA. He hurt teams by scoreboard pressure.
Yep and to be clear Im not saying there is no truth to this."You don't defend, you don't play" was the third thing Hinkley said after "I'm the right man standing" and "You get what you deserve". Such an oracle.
Absolutely. Scully is/was an exciting prospect. Can kick and mark. Rucking improved markedly this year. Watching him from the start to the almost dejected, lacking in confidence player v Centrals at Elizabeth last round is all on Hinkley and our "elite football program".Yep and to be clear Im not saying there is no truth to this.
Im just saying if you're a forward you need goal sense and either crumbing or marking presence. Being good defensively shouldnt give you a pass for lacking in these areas.
I know Atkins has been added to our list but I wouldn’t call him a recruit.I mean acting like this was a choice between Boak and Scully when we literally recruited Rory Atkins is pretty ridiculous.
Kicking goals are overrated at Alberton.I'm not saying that mongrel and work ethic isn't important but we always do this. Absolutely we really need an elite football program to motivate an up and coming player. It should encompass the training of physical and mental attributes. It's a ridiculous decision to delist Tom.Do we really need an elite football program to motivate an up & coming player ? I’m not saying it doesn’t help, but a player needs to want it bad and do above and beyond to get a list spot.

Amartey and Hipwood have no mongrel and were the Grand Finalists main talls
The issue with our depth is that Hinkley prefers to play middling veterans to genuine spuds to unaccountable older players at the expense at trying younger players.
There were 44 games handed out to McEntee, Narkle and Evans, two of which were delisted and Jed being saved by his contract.
When almost all your KPP's are drafted late you aren't going to get the complete package of skills. Sure ideally you want skills in front of goals AND applying defense when you don't have it. The issue is for forwards, when it's a choice between players with either the former or latter, it should be the former that's picked. We get the latter and the forward line has run as smoothly as a dehydrated 80 year old with constipation.I think my main issue isn't getting rid of someone for not having mongrel.
Its the way we are willing to keep players with mongrel even if they are lacking in any other hurt factor in their game whatsoever.
In the end defence is a non-negotiable and I get that, but you will always have players who have different skillsets. The problem we have is we focus so much on mongrel and end up needing to work 10x harder every game because of it (as opposed to having players that can just efficiently lead out take marks slot goals) meaning we're blown up by finals year in year out.
Easy to kick lots of goals in u18 when you are 8 ft tall. Our forward stocks in the magpies who played every game was very little. The reality is that the gap between SANFL and AFL is massive, especially for a key position player, and they clearly do not see potential in him, to delist him after 2 seasons. How was he lucky to be drafted? He kicked 50 goals in Westies U18s, and was Port Magpies leading goal kicker this year at 19 years of age.
