New Numbers for draftees
Boom Richmond recruit Trent Cotchin will wear the No. 9 guernsey at Tigerland.
The Tigers’ No. 1 pick in last Saturday’s National Draft (and No. 2 overall) is delighted to have the opportunity to wear the No. 9, which has been retired since Wayne Campbell hung up his boots at the end of the 2005 season.
“I’ve worn No. 9 the last few years . . . I started wearing it when I went to PEGS (Penleigh Essendon Grammar) the first time,” Cotchin said.
“Before then I wore No. 3, but I don’t think I could take it from ‘Liddsy’ (Brett Deledio) here.
“I’m really happy to have it . . . I would have been happy with any number, but to be that low – and Wayne Campbell’s old number – I feel privileged.”
Campbell, a four-time Jack Dyer Medallist and former Richmond captain, played 266 games in the No. 9 guernsey with the Tigers.
Other notables to wear the No. 9 with distinction throughout Tigerland history include premiership players Basil McCormack (1932, 1934), ‘Polly’ Perkins (1943), John Northey (1967, 1969) and Craig McKellar (1973).
In further guernsey news from Punt Road, the Club’s No. 2 selection in the ’07 Draft, talented West Australian key defender Alex Rance, has been given No. 18, while 202cm ruckman-forward, Dean Putt, from the Calder Cannons, will wear No. 19.
Luke McGuane will now wear No. 16, after offering his newly-acquired No. 18 guernsey to Rance, who has worn that number right throughout his junior playing career.
I think we all knew that cotchin was gonna get 9, but how nice of McGuane to exchange his number just for rancey...
By the way, does anyone know which numbers are still untaken, from my memory its 15, 27, 28 and 33
