Re: Pies intraclub player report.

I too was at the game and I saw Stanners kick 2 goals. ONE was from outside fifty. He also took a great contested mark and drilled it.
He was also reponsible for at least 2 other goals with his great passing.
He had limited time in the mid as did most but his clearance work was good.
So I guess he did not have much of an impact!!!!!!!
Nice to see some blood relatives posting their thoughts on the game. When there are 28 to 30 better players than Stanley most of which weren't stationed on a flank, then those players endevours get a higher ranking.

How do people think how Wood,Rounds,Blair and Bennell went?

But even at VFL level he doesn't play that role much.
I've seen him play at CHF a lot on the 2's

Maybe when pre last year when he wasn't fit enough. He spent most of last year in the middle in the 2's. It does worry me that even in the practice match he is not being used in the middle which makes it hard to imagine him playing there in the ones. If he is not able to play midfield he will certainly not cut it at AFL level as his major strength and selling point is his strength and ability to win the hard contest in tight.

From people at the game 2 questions. What was role like in terms of rebound. Did he offer much run and carry or zoning off ?or was it more of a stick to your task and learn how to defend a man type of job? From what was shown do you think he is likely to come into the AFL as a third tall defender offering rebound or purely educated to come in as a KPD.

2ndly Cloke and Dawes. From the sound of it Dawes was doing a lot more hard running and linking ala Cloke 07. Was he playing more of a CHF role then FF? Was Cloke playing deep in the foward line or the usual CHF role?

Did look Dawes was playing a Simmlar role to what Cloke plays with MaCaffer behing him playing Deeper those Dawes did push deeper at times like Cloke.

Those they tried Dawes at CHB on Cloke for about 3 Minutes and he got beaten really bad

He didn't do much rebounding ST because he was mainly HFF and CHF. Had a brief stint up back. He was OK on the day and nowhere near behind 28 or 30 others as Chip suggests. No one really dominated and as you'd imagine under the circumstances, there were plenty of errors. His last quarter was very good however with around 7-8 possessions, mainly at CHF. That spoke about his fitness I thought, because plenty of others ere wilting. His kicking was good all day and his disposal as neat as anyone's. I really can't understand some peoples ratings and I can only presume it's simple dislike or they don't know him/don't see him. For a fact I heard somone call out "well done Barham" for one of Danny's plays.

Regarding your quote above, I'm not so sure. He's also very strong overhead and when he gets his hands on the ball, no-one knocks it out or takes it away from him. He took 5-6 good overhead marks. And he can kick! See my earlier post. I still think the middle's his go however.

Wood looked good I thought, Rounds was noticeable, but turned the ball over a few times.

Blair, like previously mentioned has all the capabalities of making it if he can overcome his size. I presume that means he has to play out of his skin so that the footy dept. overlooks his height.

Bennell looks a juicy project. Has natural talent and flair, so if guided well could turn into a real x-factor down the line. But could just as easily do diddly-squat so.

A couple of other points from Friday I forgot.

- Jacko Barham is on the way. Quick, makes good decisions, and breaks lines. Could be handy in a year or so.

- Really want to watch Stanners in the VFL the first month or so. Shows glimpses of "AFL-playerness" before missing a target or just making a poor decision. Has the makings, has the tools, really hope he can knuckle down, apply himself, and get into the senior side.

- A negative: too many unneccessary turnovers. No real pressure from an opponent, and the foot pass misses the target and goes straight to the opposition. Gotta get that out of system. I don't know why that is, but some of our skilled guys made the worst of errors, Daisy for example completely hashed a short pass and kicked it straight to Swanny I think (opposite team). And no, I don't think we blame this one on the heat. Big problem.

- We look quicker, finally. With the right gameplan, we should really look to be smoother and faster in transition. We've been good in the last few years with run out of the backline, but I think this year might see us improve in that area again. And if we can get any number of our big strong forwards in Cloke and Rocca as well as our quick leaders in Rusling and Anthony, on song, then the scores should come.

- Clearances still an issue. Apart from Swanny, that will continue to be a weakness. We've got kids coming through to help out in the middle, Beamsy and the like, but unless Josh can stay fit and play an almost career year, clearance work might struggle for us in '09.

- And don't believe Jon Ralph when he says Daisy's got Burnsy's role. I saw Ralph down there, hardly took notice, and it doesn't take much brain power to realise Daisy's role last year differed enormously from Burnsy's, they're different players, and any kind of change to that would be so counter-productive to the team and to Daisy. People with any kind of clue would realise that Swanny, O'Bree and the captain, who pushed into the midfield quite a bit Friday (Mick liked a lot of the Crows EF performance from #5 last year I reckon) are aiming to cover this void. Open your eyes Ralphy, apparently you get paid by Murdoch to do so.

Anyone got a best 22 going into '09 after Friday? I can't do it. I want about 27 players in there. 27 into 22 doesn't go.

Dawes is fitter, and ran up the flank quite a bit. But I feel safe in the thought that the footy dept. know best about Dawes' real strength, and thats inside 50. But it's only a good thing that Chris has that ability to chase a lead outside the 50. That's where he might overturn Rocca - his mobility, becuase we all know Pebs' mobility is on a steep decline. It's still Rocca's spot to lose that said.

Cloke played CHF. The more space we can give Anthony and Rusling from the goalsquare the better. Rusling and Anthony on the lead, either one or both, are going to be tough to matchup on. Too quick, and great hands. So Trav at CHF is great for us.

.

Agreed with Dawes Mobilty might have him Overtake Rocca by Seasons end. With Rocca losing his Mobilty and Not getting any younger could see him just about Finshed about years end.

Those Rocca will start as the Better of the 2 and Not just for Rocca to lose it's also I believe Dawes to Win if he can play like he did against Geelong in the VFL consistanly they can't keep Dawes out for long

Gee I hope I never see those 3 starting in the center together, didn't one report say Maxwell barely touched the footy despite spending most his time there?

If he was tagging how many possesions did his opponent get?

Not neccessarily starting in the centre together, but Maxy can go in get his hands dirty, I want Daisy running and carrying, taking guys on, taking a bounce, delivering a 30-40m foot pass.
