First week of finals times and days

Thursday Night
Melbourne v Geelong
Friday Night
Richmond v Hawthorn
Saturday Twilight (Arvo local)
West Coast v Collingwood
Saturday Night
Sydney v GWS

1v4 will always go on the Friday night, gets the biggest crowd and the biggest TV audience
The corresponding 5v8 game will go the Thursday night to ensure more equal rest between games
West Coast v Pies will be played Twilight to maximise ratings (as opposed to a local 1pm start, 3pm in the east), and allow Pies to return same day to Melbourne
Syd v GWS is the game left over and is the lowest placed home final so gets the least consideration.

I think it will be -
WCE vs Collingwood Thursday night
Richmond vs Hawthorn Friday night
GWS vs Port Adelaide Saturday afternoon
Sydney vs Geelong Saturday night

Quote me when schedule released
I know you're WCE and you have to back your boys in, but this just looks stupid. Just as my post will if Gold Coast beat us next week

Thursday night
2 West Coast v 3 Collingwood (OS)

Friday night
1 Richmond v 4 Hawthorn (MCG)

Saturday
6 Sydney v 7 GWS (ANZ)

Saturday night
5 Melbourne v 8 Geelong (MCG)

There's two real 50/50s this week in Sydney v Hawthorn and Melbourne v GWS. If both Hawthorn and GWS win there will be two finals in Sydney, it will be interesting to see if there will be two finals in Sydney on one day. My understanding of Thursday night finals is it will be finals in SA/WA only (could be wrong though). Would be interesting to see what happens if that is the case.

If Melbourne win today it is possible that all four finals in round 1 will be in Melbourne with MCG tenants. It is unlikely but would be interesting to see

Only requires Brisbane to knock off west coast at gabba and other favourites win now, could they play 4 at g or would someone be put off to etihad

I dont think two finals in Sydney on one day will happen. It would likely have a negative effect on our crowd, and be the last thing we need.
Ours at Manuka solves the problem and would present a full house of noisy supporters.
Might be good for the Demons with less travel for the fanatical core who will. Close to the snowfields as well, so they probably know the area.

It makes no sense as they are behind in time to the east coast.

What would make sense is having a double header of FNF with 1 game being in SA/WA after the earlier start of the East game.

Don't let common sense get in the way of the AFL though

See your point, would love a Friday night double header. Don't see it happening though.

You can swap thurs and fri nights and bingo. Do you seriously think the afl and channel 7 are going to miss the chance to show collingwood's 1st final in 5 years from interstate in the prime time fri night slot? Coll lovers and haters alike will flock to watch that game, and it will be a ratings bonanza, will prob be ch 7's best rating program for the year apart from the GF - it is an absolute lock. Even if eagles lose to lions and pies grab 2nd, it will still be the fri night

Not sure why the AFL is so intent on having a Thursday night game. Who says no/gets triggered by:

Friday: Richmond vs. Hawthorn

Saturday (Arvo): Geelong vs. Melbourne

Saturday (Night): Sydney vs. GWS

Sunday (Arvo): West Coast vs. Collingwood

Thursday nights are novelty and silly tbh... The AFL are way over thinking it.

Would swap Geelong vs Melbourne and West Coast vs Collingwood.

What happens if Collingwood lose? Collingwood lose a day.

I feel like if one day less costs you a final then you probably don't deserve to win the final in the first place.

Doesn't matter cos we will beat WC in Perth the first week

I am expecting it to be:

Thursday night:

West Coast vs Collingwood (Optus Stadium)

Friday night:

Richmond vs Sydney Swans (MCG)

Saturday afternoon:

GWS vs Geelong (Spotless Stadium)

Saturday night:

Hawthorn vs Melbourne (MCG)

Would love these to be the match ups. Some great games especially the elimination finals....an all Sydney clash and Dees v Geelong after two after the final siren finishes in the H&A season.

There are some seriously epic match ups shaping up in this finals series even beyond those. Geelong v Hawthorn, Richmond v Collingwood, West Coast v Sydney, Geelong v Collingwood. Amidst all the discussion about the state of the game, we currently have all the elements for a truly great finals series.

After hearing many people saying West Coast will play Thursday Night if they win and Richmond will play Friday Night,
this is how I see the Finals Series playing out if all the favourites win.

Thursday, September 6 - Qualifying Final 2 [6:10pm awst]
West Coast Eagles vs. Collingwood (Optus Stadium)

Friday, September 7 - Qualifying Final 1 [7:50pm aest]
Richmond vs. Sydney Swans (MCG)

Saturday, September 8 - Elimination Final 2 [4:20pm aest]
Hawthorn vs. GWS Giants (MCG)

Sunday, September 9 - Elimination Final 1 [3:20pm aest]
Melbourne vs. Geelong Cats (MCG)

Friday, September 14 - Semi Final 2 [7:50pm aest]
Collingwood vs. Hawthorn (MCG)

Saturday, September 15 - Semi Final 1 [7:25pm aest]
Sydney Swans vs. Melbourne (SCG)

Friday, September 21 - Preliminary Final 1 [7:50pm aest]
Richmond vs. Collingwood (MCG)

Saturday, September 22 - Preliminary Final 2 [5:45pm awst]
West Coast Eagles vs. Sydney Swans (Optus Stadium)

Saturday, September 29 - 2018 Toyota AFL Grand Final [2:30pm aest]
Richmond vs. West Coast Eagles (MCG)
