The point about us not knowing how much his mental health affected his performances is fair enough but I'm not sure that absolves our recruiters. Psychological assessment is part of what they do.
Psychological assessment pre-recruitment only predicts mental resilience to cope with the rigours of AFL. However, there is no such psychological assessment to predict which player will be next to be hit by mental health issues. Mental illness can hit anyone of us in the future, regardless of how much of a smile we put on today.

Interesting last two draft picks by Adelaide out of Sandringham Dragons have now left the Crows disillusioned not only by AFL but one has never played again and thinking Fish will do the same. Crows have another Dragons on their list and reported he may be heading back by end of year. Maybe Crows recruiters need to re asses their focus on Dragons as basically wreck 2 guys careers and maybe a 3rd
Ask Hal Hunter about clubs wrecking careers.

We apologise for wrecking careers, as opposed, to, you know, Essendon, which has done nothing but make shining lights in the last decade.

I would argue its one of the biggest criteria they use to determine whether to draft a certain player or not.
Yes, but to predict if an 18 year old will have mental illness at age 21, is humanly impossible, because psychology isn’t an exact science, and who knows what life shit x player will get chucked at in life?

Tom Boyd springs to mind with his admission of mental illness. Decent coin in his contract, wins a premiership with the Dogs then retires soon after. Totally unpredictable stuff.

Son of a norm smith medalist.
Fair dinkum Harry Dear was miles off having the talent to play regular AFL football, mediocre at SANFL level, the last pick we took in that draft.
I remember him saying only 4 other AFL clubs spoke to him before the draft. Hell even the Hawks took Teia Miles before we took him.

Paddy Ryder and his missus say hi.

Why does it have to be mental illness? Can’t it be someone who does not want the pressures of an AFL career/personal life and all that brings? It is a high pressure career. Not many are cut out for it
It’s clearly mentioned “McAsey taking time off for personal leave” or to that effect. If the club allows him time off, there would need to be either evidence of a physical injury or a mental illness occurring. I would suspect with a medical certificate of some sort too.

You can’t just simply take time off and tell the club “I’m depressed”, and they’d be quick to say “ok, take time off”. You need some further assessments behind the scene.

This debacle is a flat out disgrace. Pick effing 6 on a mentally weak third tall defender that lacks the physical attributes to be a professional athlete. They’d be 100 blokes in bush leagues that could make a decent fist of a third tall spot and we use pick 6 to get one.

Only 13 more years or so of watching Serong tear the comp up and jag multiple AA’s, B&Fs and top 10 Brownlow finishes. Won’t even start with how painful it’s going to watching what De Koning turns into.

I replied to this earlier and said this poster sounds like a little bitch.

Post then gets deleted for 'Unprovoked treatment'.

Weird.

Im probably forgetting this, but isnt Frontal lobe not developed fully like till your 20s, which is the area of the brain that responsible for higher level executive functions, so making that definitive assessment on the psychology on a 17 year kid is fraught with danger.

In theory you cant, but almost any GP will give a medical certificate on mental health grounds if requested.

The only time they really wont, is if you admit you are feigning signs and symptoms. Even here, there is grounds to question the mental health of a patient who is doing this in the first place?

That‘s true re further assessments but in my experience (not professional sports), staff can simply take themselves to the doctor, say they are depressed and not coping, answer some questions and be issued a medical certificate. Then time off work, meetings with employee assistance program, HR and then work cover etc. it happens frequently and these days you can’t question it.

I guess my point is simply, some people cannot cope mentally in some professions and that is ok. I know I could not cope in sports, medicine, military etc and I am fine with that. AFL would be an extremely difficult life to live.

Thats why insurance companies pay big dollars to private investigators.
