Football participation increasing by 105,000 in NSW despite being at all time level records already:

Over 2 times the increase that Aussie Rules managed in NSW, one would think that Aussie Rules would have more growth with its small numbers in NSW.

Funnily enough, the same article was quoted in today's Herald Scum promoting AFL's superiority over NRL. For some strange reason, in the Herald Scum article, they left out the bit about football's dominance in NSW. I wonder why that is :)

Soccer has a much longer history in Western Sydney, and is quite deserving of the title of ruling the roost in that area. Most people do not realise that it was not the FFA copying the AFL in promoting youth participation, but in fact the AFL basically copied Rale Rasic's youth promotion.

The AFL has only just begun its push into the region, i think that eventually those growth numbers for soccer will become the growth numbers for football.
I would expect the growth numbers for football in Western Sydney next year to be about the same, and then increase to about 50,000 in 2012.

WorldCup, do you feel that Soccer should be promoted more by the DT as the main code in Western Sydney, even though league continually claim it as their heartland? Sounds like Jerusalem to me.

Participation is not bums on seats, nor does it equal TV ratings.

Seen it with basketball, and netball,T Ball & soccer, & now we have the AFL trotting it out for Auskick ... irrelevant now as it has been previously.

You would have thought that footy would be able to grow in larger numbers then football, after all, football already had huge numbers - but yet it still outgrows Aussie Rules by a factor of 2 to 1. I guess the big loser in this is league, oh well, it's a meatheads game anyway :)

Quality journalism by the Herald Scum, reprinting the article but conveniently omitting the part about soccer dominating the area :)

The marketing by the AFL has not really started yet (in the last year). Over the last 12 months a lot has happened which will only bare fruit on those tables in the coming 12 months.

At least we can agree on something. League is for brutes with no skill, or tactical initiative.

And also that Geelong should have won the 2008 Grand Final ;)

No way. If you weren't rewarded for behinds, Geelong would have lost by an even greater margin :)

For me, its football > aussie rules, then daylight to union, and even more daylight to league. I just can't see the appeal in League whatsover.

firstly these figures of association football having the highest participation isnt news to me, but its probly a shock to those numpties at the DT.

As for your question, its dificuilt to say, soccer does have the highest youth participation, but the rugby's do have strong bases aswell, and league in particular do have a significant ammount of professional teams in the west that have been successful and are reasonably well supported (canterbury, parra, ect).

Will be very very interesting to see what happens when sydney rovers and the new afl side get in there to see what happens.

Regardless, DT will never acknowledge association football (or any other sport- especially afl) as anything more than no.2 in the region, given their extremly strong ties with rugby league.

footy growing more than footbal - what on EArth are you on about??

In terms of where the codes draw the young blokes from, as against the participation discussion, schools play a huge part in the AFL & Union, this is the nursery for tomorrows stars ... League has OK from here too.

I know you are just a troll, but even still, your claim makes no sense.

If you look at raw numbers then its hardly suprising that bigger sport (in terms of participation at least) grew by more than a smaller sport. However, if you want to look at the actual rate of growth, you'd need to tranfrom those raw numbers into a percentage.

I have no idea what that would look like, but since you have avoided posting them, I think its fair to assume that AR is probably growing faster than soccer.

The article I read mentioned the soccer figure was "indoor and outdoor", be interesting to know how many play the popular indoor version - then how many of those also play the outdoor version as well - or like I and my mates used to - play indoor soccer and outdoor footy.

The fact the Aussie Rules figures exceeded R League in NSW is quite staggering really and has come from nowhere just 3 years ago. Seems build it (the GWS push) and they really will come.

They're selling tickets for just $1 to get people to go to State of Origin game 3

That's a bit exxy isn't it :)

Bring back the SOO in AFL I say. I went to many a Big V game back as a kid, there needs to be some sort of representative format where footballers are playing for their state rather then their pay cheque.

I was driving through the suburbs of Sydney all day today for work, and it was great to see so many sporting fields FULL of kids 5yrs + attending holiday soccer academies. I actually stopped at lunch and watched at least 100 kids training at a Soccer NSW academy, all around 5 years old. The future is looking very bright.

All trolling aside, this is nothing new for Soccer.

They have had the highest playing numbers nationally in living memory, but they have failed to ever build upon that. The problem (and therefore solution) is not with playing junior numbers, its preventing the funnelling of talent and interest to the other codes once they reach their mid teens.

The AFL will probably have a similar issue. As the article in this thread says, the issue is that the kids are playing whattheir parents want them to play during this stage int heir life. Soccer (and now it seems AR) is seen as a safer option, and so the sport pretty much markets itself for that demographic.

But the challenge for both codes is to make thier sport the sport of choice when the time comes in the kids life.

That's where it's all changed, within the last 10 years. My junior Soccer club were struggling to field an U-16 team, and there were only 6 teams in our
U-16 league, circa 1995. Fast forward until today, the same club I played with as a junior now has 2 U-16 teams both with squads of 18 players each, and the very same league now has 2 divisions of 10 U-16 teams.

Our national youth football excellence program has just started recently, and we won't see the benefits of that for many years to come. Never before has junior football been run in the professional fashion it is now - the future is bright for our budding young soccer players.

Ten years ago St Kilda City football club had no junior teams. Today they have twelve and will have to add more next year to accommodate all of the kids around here who want to play footy.

All these figures mean nothing in nsw boys don't like their mums who won't let them play league ,also a lot of boys attend auskick with there school because they have to making league the forbidden fruit is only going to increase its popularity

I've passed your name onto the NSW police for investigation, and recommended that every parent be contacted just in case.
