Another Victory for Football Federation Australia ....
http://footballvic.com.au/default.aspx?s=newsdisplay&aid=115194

According to our governing body, our game is no longer "football".

Get ready for Melburnians and the media to be forced to call our game "AFL" like our friends in Sydney and Brisbane.

This will open the doors for Football Federation Victoria to trade under the banner of Football Victoria, like they've been wanting to do since the advent of the FFA.

Strongest brand my butcake. I wonder how much the AFL paid to stick their gay logo over our state's peak body. While it might not be right now, the end of the old VFL logo is nigh. VFA fans get ready for "AFL Victoria State League" ... SANFL fans get ready for "AFL South Australia" and WA fans get ready for "AFL Western Australia" ... whatever happened to identity in our sport ?

Ermmm what does the F stand for in AFL?
Well AF stands for "Australian Football", but if the AFL has its way trying to compete for soccer moms it will quickly become very AWFUL (Australian Women's Football Uncontested League).

So soccer continues the 500 year history of European marginalisation of indigenous culture.

Gutless, (ex-) Football Victoria.

I hear you.

read (between the lines):

stronger brand = Soccer (football) ;)

But wasnt it monikered AFL in Sydney and Brisbane because of rugby?

So how did soccer get involved?

Yes, because they are rugby states. There is no need to change the name to AFL Victoria because of the branding issue in QLD/NSW though.

Soccer is involved because they recently changed their name to Football Australia, rather than using the term soccer (which they want to disappear) as I'm sure you'd be aware.

Yes, we all know the F in AFL stands for football, but you're either missing the point or being facetious. I for one would like Australian Rules Football to be known as football, rather than AFL like it is called up in QLD/NSW.

And people in Vic don't pronounce VFL the same way as the SANFulL or WAFulL.

.

So call it football

It is only by allowing yourself to use AFL that you help spread it. Funniest thing was in WA the Soccer body is legally allowed to use Football WA and or WA Football because the WAFL didnt register it :D

AFL is a league not a sport. The sport is Australian Rules football.

Or am I missing something here?

Of course I call it football. I don't allow myself to call it AFL so I'm not helping spread it in any way. If I use the term "AFL" I'm referring to the league, not the sport. There's hundreds of other leagues around. If I ask someone if they play golf I'm not going to say " hey, do you play PGA Tour?"

What I don't want to see in the future is kids calling the game "AFL". With these subtle little changes that's what the AFL is trying to do, it's all about their brand.

Nope, you're spot on. We have a league governing our sport (not just nationally, but now internationally) and calling it AFL to market their brand just to make more $$$$$$ - because fans have let it happen.

The fans have let it happen and the AFL is quite possibly killing the sport at the same time. It is like a developer knocking down a nice old building and replacing it with a crappy block of flats. Might turn the whole suburb to cr@p in the long term, but it brings the big bucks to the fat cats.

Your first line is correct. And that's my point.

Has anyone in QLD asked you what code of football you play? They'll ask if you play AFL, not if you play Australian Rules. That may be what you're missing.

correction, they'll ask you if you play "gayfl", as that is what the majority of young people in Sydney, Newcastle Woolongong and outside of SEQ call it.

well they'd be very mature wouldn't they.

people used to call it aussie rules , but nowdays it seems to be called afl more often.

personally , i dont have any problem with it being called afl or aussie rules. Either way everyone knows what your talking about

It appears that football victoria has dropped the ball (assuming the AFL is not responsible), the last thing they want is for kids to be saying they are going to the park and playing AFL. I don't understand how changing their operating name changes their business at all. It just gives the ffv more of a premise to call soccer football in Australia. Maybe the next thing they will do is name melbourne football club, melbourne afl club. We can throw away another 149 years of Australian Histroy because we are trying to be politically correct with the rest of the world.

Mate, what the hell can the fans do about this? Nothing - If they wanna do it they're gonna do it!

No, once upon a time it was called the QAFL in Queensland which was great. You could call it AUstralian Football and people knew what code you were talking about.

Then the AFL bailed them out when they went into liquidation and rebranded them "AFL Queensland". Had nothing to do with rugby or soccer.

I don't know why people are commenting on soccer. This is an issue with the AFL, they are the ones who have the idea that they are creating a brand. Where in reality they are selling the integrity of the sport. Just because soccer rebranded itself as "football" dosn't mean that they need to name football after the top league in which it is played. People in Victoria don't need a clarification on what football looks like.

Its just suprising that the annoucement was made after melbourne victory had won the A-league to a packed telstra dome, somthing which the stadiums football tenants have struggled to do since its inception into AFL grounds. It appears that football victoria are running scared after 2 seasons of the A-league, they look weak when they need to be as strong as ever.

:thumbsu: top post.
you're wasting your time telling that to some of these brainwashed boffins though...

BTW the Dome can't be filled to the same capacity for AFL matches and it was the A-League Grand Final, so you would expect some hype, but you do make a point.

adios.

dont get me wrong i am passionate and fanatical about my 'AFL' whilst on the other hand i am very passionate about the melbourne victory and world football...us as australians have to follow the lead of the world and label the game football...after all is the world game and it should be called what it is everywhere else around the world...im not sayin i am in favour of either side here..but i think its deserves to be called football...
