Do you realise that the last #1 pick to win a flag with the team that drafted him was Luke Hodge (2001 draft)? And that since then only one #1 draftee has won a flag at all (Tom Boyd)?

It's not worth debasing yourselves, hoping for a loss against a club we should enjoy seeing take the spoon away.

Our last pick 1 was Deledio in 2004. His departure after a quite decorated career with us got us pick 15 which we split into 2 picks:

pick 20 Coleman-Jones, later traded for one of the two picks used to secure Taranto, and

pick 25 with which we drafted Balta, 2020 Premiership player who if he was to depart as a free agent next year would almost certainly net us a top 5 pick.

Our top 10 picks from 2007 onwards:

pick 2 Cotchin triple flag skipper

pick 8 Vickery, whose departure as a free agent got us the pick we used to get Bolton, double flag player and possibly about to net us 2-3 rd 1 picks in a trade.

pick 3 D Martin GOAT, triple flag superstar

pick 6 Conca - 100+ games but ultimately a dead end for us.

pick 9 Vlastuin - triple flag gun

pick 9 Gibcus - looks a future star but shocking injuries early in his career.

So from when we first appointed Francis Jackson as a full time recruiter, we have had a sensational record with high draft picks, whether directly, or with the picks we have received trading them out.

When you finish bottom you don't just get pick 1, you get the first pick in every round, plus the rookie and pre-season drafts.

Wooden spooners v 2nd bottom since 2000...

2000 WS Saints v 2nd bottom Pies. They drew the 2010 GF, Pies won the replay. Pies & Saints both lost GF's to Geelong either side of that, Saints way more impressively. Pies got the flag but probably line ball as to which tam actually performed better as a result of the draftees from this era.

2001 WS Fremantle v 2nd bottom Saints. Fremantle had a GF team including 1 player drafted this year, but Saints did better overall. 1-0 second bottom.

2002 WS Blues v second bottom Saints. Saints easily did better. 2-0 second bottom.

2003 Bulldogs WS v Blues second bottom. Bulldogs did better easily. 2-1 second bottom leads.

2004 Richmond WS v Hawks second bottom. Hawks did better with 4 flags v 3 and more top 4 finishes. 3-1 second bottom.

2005 Carlton WS v Pies. Pies easily. 4-1 second bottom.

2006 Carlton WS v Bombers. Cripple fight. Too tight to split.

2007 Richmond WS v Blues. Tigers easily. 4-2 second bottom leads.

2008 Melbourne WS v Eagles. Eagles did better here. 5-2 second bottom leads.

2009 Melbourne WS v Richmond. Tigers did better. 6-2 second bottom leads.

2010 Eagles WS v Tigers. Tigers did better. 7-2 second bottom.

2011 Port WS v Suns. No doubt Port have done better. 7-3 second bottom leads.

2012 Giants WS v Suns. Giants have done better. 7-4 second bottom leads.

2013 Giants WS v Demons. Dees have a flag nd they probably have a similar amount of top 4 finishes so Demons. 8-4 second bottom leads.

2014 Saints WS v Demons. Demons easily. 9-4 second bottom.

2015 Blues WS v Lions. Lions have done better. 10-4 second bottom leads.

2016 Bombers WS v Lions. Lions easily. 11-4 second bottom leads.

2017 Lions WS v Suns. Lions easily. 11-5 second bottom leads.

2018 Blues WS v Suns. Blues easily, so far. 11-6 second bottom.

2019 Suns WS v Demons. Demons easily. 12-6 second bottom leads.

2020 Adelaide WS v North. Crows in front so far. 12-7 second bottom leads.

2021 North WS v Pies. Pies easily, so far. 13-7 second bottom leads.

2022 North WS v Eagles. Too early and close to call.

2023 Eagles WS v North. Ditto.

So whether in the long term or short term, teams finishing second bottom seem to have done a lot better more often than teams finishing bottom.

Having looked at all that, it is probably in our interests to beat North and avoid the dreaded wooden spoon.

6 times the wooden spoon has been won by a team who went on to win at least one flag in the period.
10 times the runner-up to the spoon team has won at least one flag since.

You don't seem to understand that most if not all 1 picks go to crap teams. That's the point of it. Boyd was picked by GWS and moved to bulldogs and got his success if he stayed well we all know the record. On the other hand number 1 picks can be crap if you don't know what you are doing remember our number 1 picks? If we get 1 and nail it we are more likely to jump the ladder than norf having 5 number 1 picks.

You don't seem to understand that most if not all 1 picks go to crap teams.

Of course I understand that. So does pick 2. And the difference between pick 1 and pick 2 is virtually nothing. Not worth the dishonour of the wooden spoon. In fact, the tanking mindset that has netted a lot of teams that top pick has resulted in a loser mindset that contributes to them continuing to be bad even with the injection of elite talent.

So everyone who agrees with the opening post would therefore happily trade picks 1, 19, 37 and 55 for picks 2, 20, 38 and 56?
In this draft to get some wins on the back of good performances from the kids, yes. We will lose plenty next year lol

In a vacuum, of course not. But that's leaving stuff out of the trade. There's a wooden spoon and our self-respect that need to be factored in. I will never respect the Carlton and Melbourne football clubs again after their antics 15 years ago.

The uncontracted players at the end of the year, Dusty, Gale to Tassie and perhaps even Hardwick/New Coach all of this would have been seen from a long way out.
IF… some of our injuries have been stretched out to make it less likely to win games and finish the season in the bottom three and I emphasis IF.
If Gale has influenced that to create a better launching pad for the next 10 years.
That is flipping ruthless.

…I love it.
