Both are also good at ignoring teammates in the clear and trying to kick an impossible snap from in between 5 players or over their head.

Sure he may get the occasional 1 out of 5, but if he handballed or passed it off that could be 5 out of 5.

Tackling and bodywork technique needs to improve to stop giving away so many frees.
Like the one tonight where he handballed to Lewis, who promptly kicked a goal ?

Massive respect for Franklin, top 5 player in the league for mine. One thing that grinds me though is the amount of exaggerating he does. He'll iniate the contact and then act as though he was infringed. not doubting that he gets scrubbed up by defenders, but he is always throwing his hands and head back with the slightest level of contact.

Great player, just wish he'd cut down on the soft dives. Really frustrates me.

Pretty happy with Mackenzie tonight, cheers for the 1.6 though Buddy.

Franklin is a superstar who didn't have his best game. But his bad ones are still better than most. Seven shots at goal under the circumstances plus a couple of assists is a reasonable effort in the conditions. More concerning probably was the amount of ball his direct opponent got. But the number of games he's won means he cannot be criticised on tonight's game.

Cyril on the other hand needs questioning. I think people are so mesmerized by how good he looks when he's on, that they're prepared to forget the 90 minutes of nothing he regularly delivers.

Would I have him in our team? Hell yes, but a few moments of breathtaking brilliance can't always overshadow 3 & 1/2 quarters of ineffectiveness.

Rediculous. The difference between Franklin and every other key forward is that when he has a bad game he still has it 15 plus times. He kicked 1.6 as opposed to kennedy who barely sniffed it, who was worse ?

Buddy is a terriible tackler i think everyone agrees with that, but hes defensive pressure and running is absolutely superb and if anyone has been to a hawthorn game they would see that.

To compare him to Fev is an insult to a bloke who would still rather see hes team win then himself play well (watch 2008 prelim foor proof). Stupid thread and tall poppy syndrome.

When each team is playing 1 extra back its hard to match up all of them. A lot of the time he was covering that extra player as they probably thought McKenzie is the least effective kick in the backline

Champion player will always be a champ and Hawthorn supporters will dislike this but.......I just don't believe the team are utilizing him as well as some other teams would.
A lot of that has to do with the fact he's playing in a team that has a few too many passengers and not enough depth throughout to really complement him a manor he was way back in 2008.

He's obviously an endurance athlete, he proven he can do the running and excel but this then leads to fact he's in the guts as Hawthorn have no other big forward apart from Franklin who can really impact a game and hurt top sides so they push him up the ground like St Kilda do with Riewoldt because their forward threats are no longer damaging (Koschitzke has been past his best for 3 years now).
If you look at Sydney, they are currently setting up that forward line perfectly around young Sam Reid and he's reaping the rewards because they have depth in that area with O'Keefe, Spangher, Rohan who are 3 decent sized players who are able to win contested footy against tall defenders, bring the ball to ground for the small blokes to give Reid plenty of opportunities.

A major concern for Hawthorn's legitimate chances of winning the flag in 2012 is that their stars are getting on in age just like Geelong but it tends to not get as much scrutiny as with some of the other clubs.
Of course age does not mean you play worse the older you get but they really need young blokes to put more emphasis on the senior players and without getting sidetracked, as an outsider looking at Hawthorn...I don't see enough young talent improving and making those older blokes look over their shoulders.

Franklin can't do it all himself and although Collingwood were beaten by Hawthorn recently, if he was playing in their team (when fully fit and firing) or Geelong, West Coast etc, he wouldn't be as scrutinized by the opposition.
Some teams of past days could get away with having passengers because a player like Carey, Dunstall, Lockett or Ablett were seriously that good they could win most one one battles quite effortlessly.
Doesn't happen in today's game as every player across every line is now as talented as the superstar in most areas, including defenders.

What's with all this sudden Franklin bashing? It's as if everyone that's potting him thought he was the greatest player of all time, and is now suddenly a dud.

We've known about Buddy's issues for some time now, being his inaccurate goal kicking, weak-ish overhead marking ability, and his knack for giving away many free kicks.

Normally these deficiencies will only slightly cripple his game. Sometimes a bit more, and sometimes they have no effect at all - that's when he almost single-handedly wins games for Hawthorn. It just so happened that tonight all three negatives of his game were firing, and firing quite well.

The chances of this happening at all are pretty slim, let alone more than once in a season. Buddy will be back to playing well again next week, and all his naysayers will be praising him like the son of a god.

He must be the most stupid footballer playing these days. Lost the game against Geelong when he tried to dribble the ball through the goals - not once but twice. Then today he did the exact same thing.

What is it with those dribble shots he does? You'd think he would learn.

Anyone who kicks with a hook or a slice will have games now and then where they just miss a lot, moreso than players who have a straighter kick. It wont mean their average will be a lot worse, they will just get conditions which make it hard for them to compensate for their natural ball movement, particularly at stadiums they are not as familiar with.

He is a fantastic player and a joy to watch.

Franklin touches opposition player = opposition player gets free kick.

This is the way it's been for years.
The umpires hate Franklin and will call a free kick against him at the slightest opportunity.

Opposition players have cottoned onto this and often go to ground when they see Franklin approaching knowing they will always receive the benefit of the doubt against him. They'll also wrestle with him and hold his arms, pretend to be pushed in front of him and so forth because they know umpires are eager to blow the whistle when Franklin is involved.
I suspect umpires have been given a directive from Geischan to watch Franklin extremely closely whenever the ball's in his vicinity.

Franklin is undisciplined at times and deserves much of the blame, but ANY player who copped the treatment he gets from umpires would lose their shit eventually.
