Coach Fremantle: where to now after Lyon?

He's done a number on St Kilda leaving them in a hole and now he's leading Fremantle down a dark path. Got them over a barrel for 1 million a year until the end of 2020.

Never been an attacking coach, so when your team lets through 150 points you'd want to be scoring a few goals yourself. Blokes a train wreck.
How exactly has he done a number on St Kilda? He took them to two grand finals whereby they lost one by a goal, the other was a draw and they were flogged in the replay.

St Kilda did a number on themselves by appointing Scott Watters.

It absolutely baffles me the flack he cops for St Kilda after giving them two chances in consecutive years. Not to mention he took Fremantle to their maiden GF appearance.

Is Lyon's job genuinely at risk? I realise he's got a contract but I reckon he could be in trouble, although I'm not sure who the possible replacements would be.

Its hard to believe that today was the biggest loss in the clubs history, only because in 24 years we've seen sooo many bad loses. A lot of Freo fans would be happy to see Lyon moved on but just as many believe he'll be given next season before the club moves. If the club doesn't improve next year he'll be gone but that could be a long season getting to that point.

Honestly don't think money is the issue, its about the only area Freo have never had an issue with (advantage of a two team state as AFL centric as WA is) but about the only way I can see the club moving Lyon on this year is if he really has lost the players and they take it to the club. Never seen much sign of that but here's hoping.

Where do you see the improvement in the Fremantle list? And what do you as a supporter wish to see happen and think should happen? I see Fremantle in that precarious position, similar to Footscray, sort of stuck in limbo. They aren’t as bad as the bottom 4 but they’re still off the top 8.

What do you think needs to happen?

Plenty of improvement to the list to come.

Cerra, Brayshaw, Blakely, Logue, Darcy, Pearce, Ryan, Cox and maybe Giro is a very young list of highly talented players.

They'll get pick 6 this year in a good draft.

Have arguably the best player in the league in Fyfe who just needs to stay on the park.

It's not panic stations, but they need to bridge the gap between Fyfe, Neale and Mundy and the rest (Walters nearer the top).

More than anything I want a change in game plan, I said at one point in the Freo game day thread that it wasn't the 90 points the Cats had scored that I was as sick of as much as the 20 points Freo had scored (man was it gonna get worse from there). There are good reasons why I'm not an AFL coach but some version of having players forward for when we do have the ball has got to be worth a try.

Improvement? Its always hard to know what's realistic and what's club-bias but we do have some decent young talent on the list and we have cleared out a lot of older players. Geelong players shrugged a lot of tackles left and right all day and some of that will improve with more players having a couple of years at the club. The worrying question is Freo have very little currency to buy in talent the next year or two (barring free agency) after our first pick the rest are likely to be in the 80+ range having traded our second, third and fourth rounders previously. And unless Cerra decides he wants out there's bugger all trade bait left on the list. So if too many of the young 'could be anything' players don't progress we could end up with a lot of limited role players all over again.

Dark day today and its no excuse for such a performance but there are a lot of missing players and tired kids out there. Win or loss though I want to be entertained by Freo again, that's why we follow the game.

You had me until you had GWS "jagging" a flag... nope, sorry, can't have that. Failing at a flag like his previous efforts, that i could go for.
Runner up ross

Nah i can see him going the full thinkg with gws but it would be a bad move - you want them playing exciting footy to get the fans in

What's next is that this thread will get locked as it wasn't started to have an actual discussion but just as an excuse for an Eagles fan to stick the boots in.

I'm an Eagles fan, Freo must hang tough with Ross, sure it was a pathetic performance, can see Freo win 8-10 in 2019, unless Brad Lloyd royally shafts the club over the draft/trading period.
How hard Freo deals with Lloyd given his contract in place, will be a good guide to how far this Freo admin group can take the club, but Ross is one of the best.

Ross has to go, that press conference was embarrassing. He talked about their rebuild and how in 2012 they had an average year and turned it around in 2013 and made a grand final. Since that illustrious grandfinal year the amount of 50+ point beltings each season has consistently increased, culminating in a total of 9 so far this year with Collingwood still to come next week. Ross is proud of the fact that Fremantle has won 8 games this year but the reality is they have been flogged by 50+ points the same amount of times as Carlton have who have 2 ****ing wins!

Ratten would be a good get for Freo

Re-signed until 2030 at which time Fyfe will take over. Lyon will be inducted in to the Fremantle Hall of fame for taking them to a grand final in 2013 (obviously, nothing from now until 2030, let's keep it realistic).

Although an obvious troll, reflective of the current Freo mentality.
