Toast Fremantle's 1st 2016 National Draft Pick: Griffin Logue [Pick #8]

Why on earth would we worry about Logue's height when Alex Pearce is 200cm and has already made several top-level KPFs his bitch?

Exactly. Gibson would be shorter than Logue and has played on bigger opponents for years as well. Sometimes gets beaten for height one out but more often creates headaches by intercepting and cutting off the play. Don't judge draftees until two years in.

Gibson has been one of the leagues best key backs for half a decade, and he's sub 190cm. It's not about being tall, it's about being able to nullify contests using the skillset you have. Hell, Alex Silvagni went alright and he was 191cm. Height will be the least of Logue's worries going forward.

Macca was only 194cm. In an interview Franklin said that Macca was one of the best defenders because he was so good at body positioning and making body contact at the right time to unbalance the forward.

I disagree. Times are changing and ruck sized key forwards are the new thing . Patton, Boyd , Moore , Daniher , Lynch , Wright , Schache , Lobb , Brown are all 25 or younger so of course they aren't going to dominate week in week out But Key Forwards are getting bigger.
Times aren't changing. No 200+ cm forward has ever averaged more than 2 goals per game. Not even the current crop look near to beating that. The best historically is Kurt Tippett, who has put in spud like performances in just about every final he has played (aside from probably the 2012 prelim). Paul Salmon was also OK as a forward.

The reason why 200+cm 'forwards' are popular is because of changes to rotations, which has made the 2nd specialised ruck (blokes like Seaby or Mark Blake) a thing of the past.

If we're worried about whether 194cm key defender might have trouble matching up on a pinch hitting part time ruck, we have bigger problems.

Have you seen him play, you didn't answer the question. ;)
I reckon I would've seen him play a couple of games for Swan Districts but I wasn't paying any particular attention to him back then. I am basing my opinion heavily on the kicking displays featured in his highlights packages.

How many highlights you saw as compare to freo recruitment team .

They describe his kicking a 'neat'. That's the least offensive word I can think of for acceptable.
Who else got the overall package available who is elite kick at freo first pick . Will brodie not elite kick either. English most postie said no also .

I'm pretty sure Macca was 191 or 192 cms. Your point stands though.

Judging someone either good or bad on a couple of minutes of a video is hardly fair. The Freo recruiters would have watched hours of live and video play before making their decision. They obviously think his kicking is up to scratch .

I didn't say anything about not picking him. I said his skills by foot are only ok. Salim describes them as 'fine'. Fremantle describes them as 'neat'. Seems we all agree that they aren't bad but are not a strength of his either. I want better than ok delivery from our third tall and anyone smaller. That's why I suggested playing him as a second tall.

My bad , a bit of misunderstanding there .

Salim. I have not said a single negative thing about Griffin Logue. In fact I believe the recruiters made the right pick given our needs and the remaining players. What I don't agree with is people that believe this bloke is the answers to our problems coming off half back. Ok skills, which the club, yourself and I have all described him as having simply won't cut it imo. He holds the attributes to make a good inside midfielder but given our current brigade I'd prefer he didn't at this stage.

Luke Mc didn't have the best kick and he was the best CHB in the comp.

I think freo will rebound through weller , croz and s.hill . Logue and taylin , luke ryan will trial it with peel . Ross mention is a four year program . People keep cutting this rebuild to 1 to two year.

I just watched Logue's highlight package from the Allies game. He hit targets between 20m and 40m away. He's capable of kicking the ball hard and flat or weighting the kick. Is he an elite kick? Not yet, but there's enough to suggest he's capable of becoming better than ok if he works at it.

I would describe Luke McPharlin as a neat kick and he went alright.

To be honest I don't think we've necessarily taken him as a KPD. I think maybe the club hopes he can become a really big bodied mid given his pace and tank:

Logue showed his versatility later in the year playing as an inside midfielder in a colts game against West Perth, picking up 33 disposals, 25 contested possessions, five marks (four contested), four tackles and six inside 50s. (From FFC website)

I'm dreaming and seeing Fyfey with an afro instead of the top knot crashing through packs like a tank. I wonder if we asked Swans to give him a run in the midfield to see how he went? ;)
