Toast Fremantle's 1st 2016 National Draft Pick: Griffin Logue [Pick #8]

Great post. Honestly can't see how some on this board aren't happy with the selection.
The fact that he is AFL playing weight and runs a 15+ beep test is testament to his character and work ethic. Shouldn't be seen as having limited upside just because he's worked hard as a junior.

I don't get this either, SPS or McCluggage are not going to improve their skills when they get into the AFL system? If Logue turns into one of the fittest players in the league with his athletic profile, skills and toughness he could be anything. The upside of Logue is that he's always been a big guy and had to play as a key defender at junior level. His numbers at the combine show he's capable of playing as a half back flanker or a mid and I'm excited to see his development and where he can get to.

Come grand final day and we have this beast of a human like Hodge playing behind the ball that can intercept mark, play on talls, offer some over lap run and be an imposing physical threat around stoppages. I know what team I'm backing to win.

Impressive athlete =/= impressive footballer. He will not be better than Fyfe as an Insider, so where does he fit? Will he displace Neale or Blakely? Perhaps Blakely, but I'd hope not personally.

A defender that is not particularly tall, with ok skills and elite endurance. Nothing to get overly excited about. Best case scenario for me is 2nd key back, in which case we can hide his 'only ok' skills and take advantage of his natural instinct to run and create by pairing him against a (relatively speaking) lumbering behemoth. This is the only role I can see him truly excelling at at the moment.

I think logue is the new style for afl .

Other sport like soccer invent the sweeper role who excell in afl by MJ .

But soccer no longer use sweeper but defensive mid. Logue fit that model well.

If you're a whinger you can use it either way. Logue has no upside because he's already an elite athlete.
Darcy has no upside because he's obviously lazy and overweight.
Glass half empty/

Interesting you say he won't be better than Fyfe as an inside mid. Given that Fyfe was drafted as a skinny forward, I don't think anyone thought he would be an inside mid.

Logue has elite endurance, speed and can jump. He has played as an inside mid and did well there at colts level.

At 18 years old he's listed as being 194cm. There's a good chance he'll grow a few more cm in which case he will be around the same size as Tabs - well and truly big enough to play KPP.

You say he has ok skills. The club describes him as a neat left foot kick:

With application disposal skills can be improved and this guy seems to have commitment in spades.

If he does play on lumbering behemoths, they'll get their pants pulled down.

Since when is 194cm not tall? Look at the Hawks or Bulldogs back lines and at their best they are all < 194cm. He was also top 10 for running and stationary jumps. Also top 10 in repeat sprints. He'll be fine as a KPD. I hope he improves his rebound but the addition of Luke Ryan might help that ;)

The question I have is whether he can play through the midfield or not. I think in time he could play a role - even if it is just pinch-hitting. If Pavlich could still pinch hit in the middle this year I think Logue has some capacity also.

Logue will be best as last men rooming mid a link between mid and defend .

I've got to say I fee somewhat like you.

I hope i'm proved wrong but i don't see this guy's standout attributes (or possible role-- too small for KP, not suitable for a mid-role in a team packed with such talent) to justify pick8. I hope i'm proved wrong.

194cm is tall enough to cover most Key forwards. Also a 91cm running vertical should be more than enough to make up the difference on taller opponents.
Hope so-- i guess we should all hold our judgement before we actually see his guy play!

If postie look at freo young in and out mid in the list blakely, langdon, balic , tucker with possibility 188 hughes moving to mid too . How many of them going to play for first team without senior getting injured . Will like them to develop further with peel. getting young mid now and playing out of position is worse than letting them undraft playing in their state league and grow in their usual position .

Could he become our McGovern? An elite intercepting utility that starts the rebound chain, that can help out other defenders and lockdown someone if required.

I explicitly stated that I thought he'd make an excellent 2nd tall. We seem to agree. I am glad. However I would like to add that running vertical jump is quite an irrelevant attribute to KPD imo. To me it is more about body positioning, 20m sprint speed, height and weight/strength.

Made that statement purely on the basis of probability that any player will be better than Fyfe, which is slim.

Neat is a great synonym for ok. It would be great if he continued to grow so he can perform that 2nd tall role that I said he would excel at even better!

Disagree about skills improving other than marginally, it just doesn't happen often enough to count on it. As an aside, at pick 8 for a 'potential midfielder' should this be coming into the equation at all? I lean towards no. Fine for KPD though.

Like I said I think he could be a gun 2nd tall.

I think as long as he isn't playing on a 200cm+ forward he will do fine.
