There is a 30 or 40 game price you have to pay to get a good player (especially key forward) from the draft. It consists of frustration and inconsistency for coaches and fans but only when the player comes out the other side, with 50 odd games they will start to flourish and be consistently good.
Amiss has played 4 games.
Sturt has played 5 game.
Treacy has played 22 games.
Erasmus has played 5 games
Johnson has played 0 games.
An important point to note - you CANNOT short circuit this price by “developing him in the WAFL”
This is a flawed strategy. You are only delaying the payment of the price at AFL level to later. There is NO substitute for AFL match experience. None.
The past 25 AFL premiership teams have all had at least 13 players in their premiership side who had played their last 50 career games with that club.
This is just how important this statistic is because it is a great KPI of a team's cohesion and the health of their playing 22 list.
For this reason, Freo should try not have too high expectations for the likes of Jackson, O'Meara and even our 2nd year players like Clark and Brodie, but 2023 is also our first year since our rebuild started back in 2016 where we can expect to most often field a team with 13+ 50 game players. That is, I have excused Freo's failing in previous seasons because of injuries and the stage of our rebuild ... which is why these first 2 losses are extremely disappointing and deserve heavy criticism.
