This is so damning. We didn't actually do anything last year, our players clearly drank their own bath water over the off season.

Player x was bad

Player y was worse

But the root of the issue is the coaching. That's where the frustration should be first and foremost
Yep. Writing was on the wall last season where we ranked 16th for Marks inside 50. And dead last for marks inside 50 rate (Marks inside forward 50 per inside 50).
We won games last year due to an exceptionally good defense and a midfield that were punching above their weight, not by heavily scoring.
As we are seeing, it doesnt take much for all that to unravel.
I think in the last 3 years I have enjoyed about 10 quarters of our football. The rest has been a boring shit-fest.
Was promised a lovely fudge sundae, all I got was a bowl of stale cream :(

I don't think I've ever seen a coach turn a fanbase as apathetic as Longmuir has made us. Under Lyon when we were bad people were angry and at least looked hopeful towards the future.

With Longmuir, all I see is people losing their enjoyment, not caring anymore.

That apathy definitely started in the last few years of Lyon's tenure. Going to games live was such a drag and there was no energy in the crowd whatsoever. It was put in the background briefly, but has never really gone away and been lurking. So now it has come back quickly and strongly.

Our backline is way too slow in every way. Pearce, Ryan, Cox, and Young are all useless when the ball hits the ground. And in terms of moving the ball, every time Cox or Pearce mark it they wait 30 seconds before chipping it backwards, and Ryan does the long bomb which ends up straight back in our d50 (but its an effective disposal apparently!!). Ryan should not be playing imo. Use his sore back as an excuse just drop him. He can't play small because he's way too slow and he offers nothing offensively. Try wagner or worner. And Pearce would be dropped ala Logue last year if he wasn't captain. If our defence isn't standing up we've got nothing.

Is that so fellow Freo fan?
I've watched every Freo match for the past three years and get to them in person when I can. While my own club was eating itself alive and churning out performances that left us numb, this club was what I looked forward to watching each week as they seemed poised to rise, and did so last year. While I'm a North supporter first and foremost and am rapt my club has its passion back, the last few years have left me emotionally invested in Freo's fortunes as well and it hurts to see how this year has started.

Geez, tough gig if you picked us as your safe space. I'm guessing you like pain.

Carry on.

Bro... and by bro I mean never my bro. Our backline is solid. The absolute shit support they get out of our forward line and our exhausted midfield thats trying to hold the fort is atrocious.

Not sure why too many giving a free pass to the defense, but they been pretty terrible this year. Getting out marked or giving away free kicks.

Very slow in moving the ball or having problems trying to clear the ball.

Not going to get distracted by the defence playing like a bunch of Auskickers, they've got credit in the bank and it's the one part of our game that's held up consistently under Longmuir. Adelaide are quality going forward too.

The bigger is we were again beaten up around the ball. Adding insult to injury, despite our midfield struggling we still got it inside 50 as many times as Adelaide and yet could barely manage 10 goals. It's the same fundamental flaws that keep appearing and yet there seems to be no desire to change anything. I appreciate we are light on forward quality but I'm convinced that if the players at least stopped all flying for the same ball/getting in each others way/started leading to create space, we'd be more threatening even with a makeshift front 6.

If we're a better offensive side we probably still don't win today because of the aforementioned Auskicker defending syndrome but still...the game wouldn't have been over at half time. It's easier to pile on the goals when you know that the opposition can barely throw a punch back at you.

The team is devoid of confidence and look utterly confused at times. There's very little leadership and even the Captain's spot in the side is shaky. Our coaches have seemingly done little to fix the primary issue with the side that hamstrung us at times last year while the rest of the competition have caught on how to nullify plan A.

Our defence has been pretty bad all year. Always going to struggle up forward with the lack of quality up there, and the midfield was only going to mildly improve with the loss of Mundy, but our defence has gone backwards in a big way. It is no longer our strength. Probably not even our strongest area of the ground.

They were slow and lazy today. Pearce is terrible 1v1. The slowest movement we get is when we're getting a mark/free kick/kick in from our d50.

Is it the game plan, lack of skills, or lack of confidence? I fear the retirement of Mundy has been a greater loss than we dare to admit. We will have to play Fyfe in the middle when he comes back. Right now, we are getting killed at the contest. Maybe throw Bruce Banfield in the middle. He isn't fast but has the size. Next week wonderboy Rotwell will kill us if we don't clean up our game.

I hope Serong has secretly signed an extension, otherwise we are going to be in a world of hurt if he leaves. I already hate you 2023...
He already signed on for four more years around christmas.
