Lol Ryan's leap was not 50/50. He got his entire palm to that ball. Did not infringe on Lobb while doing it. There is no way you can argue that was unrealistic.
Agree.
Umpires were happy to pay anything. Issue was did Ryan put the hands on his back prior to touching it?
Got back in front, then Lobb bombs that goal. Bulldogs lifted after that

Lol you talk like you want the team to be made up of all Australian with hefty pay packet. Pretty sure all teams want this

Also having a good forward line like Carlton does on paper doesn't mean jack.
We have one of the worst forward lines in the league.
You don’t get an AA for kicking 30 goals a season. If you play a full season of AFL as a small Forward and can’t kick 30-35 goals what is even the point? It’s not even 1.5 goals a game.
Also your love child Bailey Banfield is not the answer before you start putting his name up

Yep that was 100% the wrong call against Ryan. Not one of those 'judgement' frees to feel aggrieved about, 100% the wrong call that never ever gets paid.

Umps handed them the clearance, then handed them the shot at goal. Then handed them the next clearance that lead to a goal. Then ignored exactly the same hold on Treacy allowing them to win the next clearance too and kick three in a row. Then we gave up and let them steamroll us.
It was bullshit

You have to wonder whether the thought ever goes through WA players heads that they will always get the rough end of the stick from Vic Brother

No hands in the back. Just a clean jump with the knees at the shoulders, and his palm on the ball.

I think supply was more of an issue today which is tied to our rebound game. Our ability to rebound this season is horrible compared to last year. Ball movement is slow and conservative and we always go side ways to the wing, rarely through the centre. I also notice that we lack the gut running that the top teams have. JLo has shown an ability to improve his game plan but if he is conservative in nature, he will never implement an aggressive gameplan.

People who bag Henry have no idea. A classy player with a big future.
Frederick needs to be dropped, he hates contact and only rushes to tackle at the last minute when he knows he won't reach the player. Needs heart xray/scan (to see if he has one). Goes missing for VERY long periods. Why on occasions was Hughes (not AFL standard) manning up Ugle-Hagen? Puzzling. Some shocking skill/kicking at crucial times.
Agree with a previous poster on young Treacy taking the ruck at critical time when we have Darcy/Jackson. JLo?

Is Fyfie on his way back to Lake Grace to drive his dads triple decker stock truck? Needs to pull the pin now before his great legacy is tarnished in our memories.

Freddy just never does enough. Goes missing. Didn't touch the ball in the last quarter, 1 or 2 touches in the first. Another meh 8 possessions, 7 uncontested. Total of 3 tackles the last month. Does either some lazy/selfish or both things every week. I remember when he came back from that drinking suspension last year, he was getting 3-5 tackles a game. Obviously felt he owed his team mates something then but why can't he do that every game? I think he plays as an individual at times and team mates know it - sometimes he gets in good positions and team mates ignore him back. Well, probably reading too much into it but that's what it looks like.

He had a mare against Richmond then missed with injury. Hes gotta be lame still.

Disappointing, without being disastrous. While it didn't warrant the complete implosion that came after it (which both Justin and the on-field leaders have to take some blame for) the Ryan free and attendant Lobb charity goal were the sort of momentum killer that we continue to struggle with.

  • Jye continues to grow and prosper and should be a genuine shout for the Rising Star.
  • Even with the couple of clangers, Henry was excellent - other than Serong and Johnson, he was our only mids moving effectively during the ridiculously congested periods.
  • Darcy (who I thought out-pointed English, stats be damned) and Serong continue to toil pretty manfully each week.
  • I thought Clark was excellent (and is showing an aggressive edge that our backline really needs.)
  • Thought Moose had another solid effort, only to be let down by more than a few of his colleagues.
  • By virtue of the Suns being the Suns, and the logjam being the logjam, we've actually snuck up a spot on the ladder.
  • The mistakes, such as they were, are fairly obvious and easily rectifiable.

  • Thought Cox and Ryan were both woeful in long stretches today. We have far, far, far too many defenders who think it's their job to sit in space, seagull intercepts and forget bout their man. Genuinely think we' need to consider rolling Hamling in next week to counter McKay and Cameron - would be happy to see either of them get a run at Peel.
  • Some of the tactical and coaching calls were a bit baffling - letting Marra and Bont run loose with basically zero accountability? Treacy taking the crucial ruck knocks (and Serong and Brayshaw off the ground) in the final Q? Jackson kept out of the middle despite battling up forward?
  • The forward line being unable to convert when we were on top in the 3rd. I don't think we need another key forward as much as we need someone with physical presence and a cool head on their shoulders who can be the forward line general and keep everyone together. Sonny does as much as he can atm, but there's only so much he can do. I think Jye will be that figure eventually, but a guy (and an ostensible leader) like Switta really needs to step up in those situations.
  • The umps: **** Razor, his smarmy bald mate and the other one.

It was disastrous coaching in hindisight. I'm sure they will be talking about that a bit in review. Treacy in the ruck (Darcy stuck on the bench) and the young mids in and bang bang bang game over.
Due to circumstances beyond my control I had to listen to it on the radio and that stood out like dog's balls. Darcy's off the ground for a rest but where the fk was Jackson? We just got in front. Appalling decision making.

Weird stuff going on here

Naughton played Pearce perfectly. Played much further up the ground drawing Pearce out of our d50 and leaving Cox to deal with Lobb and JUH with no tall help. Cox getting crucified this game but where was Ryan and Hughes to help? Cox lead us in intercept possessions, intercept marks, marks, spoils, one percenters and was huge early on. Ryan has played so many worse games this season where he racks up numbers but his man gets plenty of shots on goal but doesn't receive scrutiny from many on here.

Righteo, sorry, he's been terrific since he came back, must have Tarzan's grip on his fingers as he is grabbing everything, his disposal including shots at goal handballs and field kicking are Nick Daicos like, he never gets caught with the ball and also seems to have picked up a yard of pace.

Why are we ALWAYS inexperienced? How many times have I heard that over the past 26 years!
If we were really running out an inexperienced side, we wouldn't have played JOM, Aish or Hughes at all, and we would have had Fyfe as sub with Ras starting.

The number of posters on here who keep pointing to inexperience as the reason for our losses is just hard to fathom.
Objectively, our losses (and several of our only just squeaked a win when we should have won convincingly) over the last year and a half have been due to:
  • poor team selections, favouring experienced but non performing players over younger players;
  • poor coaching preparation, reflected in mismatch positioning at starting bounces, and very poor first quarters game after game after game;
  • poor in game coaching, with consistent failure to be able to stop the other team from getting run ons and swinging momentum;
    Today nearly everyone on here blames the umpires for the loss - but seriously, if all it takes is two dodgy frees to the other mob and one missed free to us, and our players drop their heads and stop giving efforts and second efforts, are we really claiming to be a finals quality team? Every team gets a period in every game when the calls go against them, if we claim we are a well coached team we need to be resilient enough to beat not just the other 22 but the other 25 - and relish and thrive when we get dodgy calls, instead of dropping our bundle;
  • when we do play the kids, we often put them in odd combinations in key moments in the game. Have a look at our bench rotation and player subs in the last 14 games. It is not at all uncommon for us to have three of Darcy, Brayshaw, Serong and Young all sitting on the bench at once, while guys like Ras, MJ, Henry and Aish play centre bounce. Classic example which people finally are commenting about was in today's last quarter - not only did they have Brayshaw and Darcy off for an extended period at the same time, but Ras, as cold just on sub, MJ and Treacy were 3 of our 5 in the centre bounce. FOR MULTIPLE BOUNCES!! Bizzare to expect the likes of MJ and Ras to stop Bont, Treloar, Macrae or Libba. To let it keep happening at multiple centre bounces when the game was on the line is just a failure of both coaching and on field leadership, and it has happened multiple times in the last 18 months (including in games we've wound up winning). Play the kids, but have them supported by vets and rotate them out in key moments so you have your best on field, not on the bench.
  • consistently selecting and playing in the midfield slow players, including playing plodders on the wing just because they have "endurance". This bigfooty myth that somehow an endurance plodder makes a great winger is just garbage, especially on bigger tracks like the MCG or Optus. Pace is key for wingers and every team selected should have at least three pacey players, regardless of so called endurance or "he can run all day" metrics.
  • a complete failure to rate or value tackling - today the Bullies top 4 tacklers had 39 tackles between them. Our best 4 tacklers combined for 26. Cox didn't lay a tackle despite all the ball down his way, and the great Hughes and Ryan only laid 2 each. 4 trackles total from your half back line is a complete joke - but exactly what happens when the selection panel consistently drops high tackling players just so vets who do little or nothing can stay in the team.
All that said, today was great in that it exposes JLo as a coach, and at the same time we also had great games from Amiss, Henry, Treacy and again from Clark, who is having a great year under the radar. If we can just get some better selections, some coaching prep that leads to better starts, and better in game rotations and coaching we won't be far off.

*Disappointing finish. I dared to dream when Swaggy kicked his goal.
*Whatever you may say about Henry he certainly has the courage to take on the risky kicks into the corridor even after stuffing up. Guess that’s a good thing?😜
*I posted frustratedly during the game re the shanked kicks into our fifty that just killed us (Fyfe,Aish,Walters for example). No real excuse at this level.
*Certainly hope we draft a small forward that has the natural goal sense of Jye and Sonny.

Why has the 'we're still young' mantra dominated discourse?

We were younger last year and just missed out on Top 4. Jackson has already negated the loss of Lobb. Logue and Acres were important but don't justify this descent - Erasmus is only a sub. Makes no sense.
Ya I agree with this. Feel like it’s becoming an easy excuse.
How many players are having better seasons in 2023 than 2022? I can name several that are down

Meh, bigger, more experienced team won an arm wrestle, we butchered the ball at key moments, a couple of bullshit frees (well taken goal mind), plus some obvious missed ones all adds up to a loss. Still not all doom and gloom:

1) We came back to take the lead; a bit more nous and we keep that.
2) Amiss is a ******* gun, and only 19.
3) Treacy is not on the same trajectory as Amiss, but really liked a lot of his game today.
4) We had a lot of opportunities to win that. These are the kind of swing-around games we win next year. Probably with an easier schedule.
5) Ras got a lesson, will serve him well.
6) Got another tough, contested, high pressure game into some growing stars.

Also it's school holidays, so not even the Dockers can * with my zen. Namaste mother*ers.

Amiss has kicked 21 goals since Treacy come back into the team. Previously he had kicked 8.

I think we overachieved last year given our demographics and I think the majority of our current issues relate to inexperience, especially after the mini upheaval of the list last year.

I think people underappreciate how young we are and how poorly teams as young as us usually perform. We're second only to Hawthorn in inexperience most weeks. Everyone expected Hawthorn to be a spoon contender yet expected us to be a top 4 challenger. I think that speaks volumes for how talented our young team is, even if it creates unrealistic pressure in the here and now.

I also think people underrate how much having a hardened, experienced team matters in the AFL. Especially for one who has to travel ever second week.

I think we will easily be top 6 next year, if not top 4. Feel free to @ me if I'm wrong.

Last year was the outlier, not this year.

Improvement is not linear.
