Game Day Freo v WCE - Preseason Game 1

Wait a minute. Wasn't Balic BOG on the weekend? Why would you prefer someone on the rookie list who is unlikely to get a game when you have someone on the main list pushing for selection?
Was this directed at me? Assuming it was I wasn't actually advocating for him to play this week, just a general musing over his role at the club. If after all this time even considering him for selection is "pointless" then wtf are we wasting a spot on our list for?

\Its a moot point on Balic playing. He is back in rehab.

I'm not talking about Balic. If it was a choice between the two I'd obviously go with Harley but I just want to know if we keep giving Josh lifelines just for him to clog up our list. Ditto Brady Grey. Basically if these two aren't strongly pushing for selection this year I'm gonna be shitty because guys like Barlow and MDB were turfed in favour of them. I know they wouldn't have been in direct competition but a spot on the list is a spot on the list

Directed at Meima who wants to replace Balic with Grey. We have a main list player turning in BOG performance and he prefers a rookie list player with next to zero chance of getting a game this season. I am a tad sick of the wall to wall whingefest.

Yeah I thought it was weird Salim started talking about Balic, I clearly missed meima's post and consequently the context of your post. Yeah, don't wanna be too negative but I just can't see Grey making it. At best he'll become a solid foot soldier in the Matt Deboer mould (although he doesn't have the fitness of MDB...) but his kicking holds him back too much and the jury's still out over what his best position even is. That said, I would still like for both he and Josh to get games at some stage this season, and I'm sure there will be opportunities, just to see if they can vindicate the faith invested in them by the club. Their best bet you'd think would be to gun for Ballas' spot.

I think I not going to discuss grey and deluca anymore , not sure what the reason for a discussion forum if you can't have multiple high pick in a year , don't want to finish bottom to convert high pick into multiple pick , your major players Sandi and Johnson can't go on forever. I presume freo development department a fail.As much I hate to said it some of the SA stuff I think make more sense. Just mention a few Waste of time Simpson , Pitt ,Colin slyvia ,yarren ,Duffy, moeller, tanner smith .

* getting new players in and kick them out in three years time . Yet suban , sutty ,d.pearce still going on after 2013 .please don't mention meima , is not like improvement from freo squad member wil be add more value into my pocket.

You say the likes of MJ and Sandi can't go on forever but while they're fit and available, you still play them ahead of Darcy, Logue and Cox. If the likes of Ibbo, Suban, Pearce and Sutcliffe are going to lose their spot in the team, it won't be to Deluca or Grey, it will be for Croz, Sheridan, Tucker, Langdon, Weller and Ryan. Just because they're on the list and/or it's preseason, it doesn't mean we have to play them. After last season, i'd rather see close to best 22 working on how we're going to play once the season starts proper.

West coast played a team of oldies, Mitchell, Priddis, Petrie, Kennedy,Butler ,Le Cras ,Masten. All over 30 or close to 30. All teams play a high percentage of established players in practice games. Tucker, Blakely, Langdon, Weller,Hamling,McCarthy Darcy all young and played.

I questioned the redrafting of Deluca and Grey before it actually happened. We had no obligation to redraft them yet did it anyway when we've already decided they aren't good enough once. Would've preferred us taking a punt on a couple of 21+ year old VFL/WAFL guns who'd quite frankly be closer to a game than Deluca or Grey would be.

I'm not a fan of redrafting players as rookies. If it's for salary cap reasons (ie player sitting out last year of his contract on rookie list) I'm fine with it. Honestly I was quite happy re-rookie-ing Morabito and Smith. Two decent draft picks unlucky with injuries (and space on the senior list was required) but Grey and Deluca were late picks and have shown that their disposal is probably going to hold them back from ever making it.

I'm not really a huge fan of our rookie list tbh. Quite happy having two 18 year old kids there, that's fine. Nyhuis could be a decent player in time, that's ok. Uebergang may be talented but is he ever going to recover from injuries? Bad luck if he doesn't, not necessarily the club's fault. But not having a few mature aged guys coming through that would be good injury cover doesn't sit well with me. What was so bad about Broughton, Barlow, Silvagni and Spurr, even Lower for a season or two that we completely abandoned a recruiting strategy that seemed to be working fine. And yes I'm aware we've drafted Collins, Yarran and Ryan in the national draft since but we also brought in Ballantyne and Mzungu straight onto the senior list when we were doing the mature aged thing well.

Plus having 4 incoming best 22 players to the list need to be groomed into their roles alongside the players who will be in the team as a priority. Game 1 counts for 4 points, and Lyon has a history of winning them, apart from last year where we went off script.

Geez the guy is finished and his body will never be up to playing be up to playing AFL, keeping him even longer would have been ridiculous. Just let it go..

The whole rookie situation can be solved if the AFL gets rid of the rookie list altogether, increases the number of players allowed on the senior list by two/three spots and the salary cap, too. That way we wouldn't see so many picks passed up in the national draft.

Another progressive strategy the AFL could implement is that clubs are allowed to draft up to two players from the state leagues, in a mid season draft. The salary cap for these two players could be something like $100,000 with the clubs allowed to offer a six month contract.

Rookie List players are always a long shot and rarely make it. But here's a name for you. Podsiadly (sp). Pretty good poster boy for players don't develop as though it is a production line. And I don't think it is an abandoned strategy. Collins and Ryan are both mature recruits. Plus we pulled in 4 ready to play trades. After that I think it is wise to focus on younger players.

I was happy re-rookie-ing him at the time (end of 2015) Should have been delisted in 2016 - I never said otherwise (if it reads differently that way it wasn't what I was trying to say).

Point is he could've made it if his body was fine - injuries or not Grey and Deluca won't make it IMO.

All you Brady Grey doubters and skeptics will be eating a lot of humble pie this year when my boy comes in and absolutely CRUSHES it. Every time he has pulled on a Fremantle jumper he has given his absolute heart and soul, and there are a few opposition players who start looking around when Brady is close to the play. Those of us who watch Peel games regularly know what he brings to the side, and I would have loved to see a bit of his junkyard dog attitude last weekend.

I have closely watched his kicking at training this year and while he will never be a Michael Walters, I think his kicking deficiencies have certainly been addressed and I would sat he is far from the worst on the list now.

The boss loves his attitude, and given a reasonable run at Peel he will be elevated to the main list and by season's end will be a lock for best 22.

This is not speculation, it is fact.

And zero issues with that, I just think I'd rather two new players rather than Grey and Deluca. Let's be honest we know they won't make it. I'll be very surprised if either is on our list this time next year. Other players may be long shot but still a better chance than Grey and Deluca. Just my opinion anyway.

Contradictory statements there buddy - I know at least one of them will not just make it, but will go on to become a club legend.

Clay Smith would be a good player to mould himself on I reckon. Known for his ferocity at the contest but also known for his absolutely terrible kicking; it's certainly not what you'd call a 'polished' action these days but he was able to improve his deficiencies enough to become an important cog in a premiership winning team. I honestly hope he makes it, even if I'm not confident he will, because having another guy that makes defenders hear footsteps is something we could definitely use. Apeness and Dawson are currently the only guys I can think of that bring genuine hurt. Fyfe can but he doesn't mean it in the same way.

I think we can all agree on the players that wont be on the list in four years, even next year we would
all have an opinion.
My opinion is that D Pearce, Balla, Johnson, Suban. Ibbo, Dawson, are close to their use by date, and
hoping Sandi has another two.
All of the above players spots should have replacements developing, otherwise 2018 we start from scratch
again.
The Boss has stated we are rebuilding?
