Fullback of the century???

I think Dustin Fletcher & Darren Glass would have to say something about that...

Disagree. Fletcher is a little over rated and while Glass has emerged in the last couple of years, as far as i'm concerned Scarlett is by a reasonable margin the best full back of the last 7 or 8 years.

Silvagni only played on Ablett towards the end of Abletts career, and when he was in his 30's. It's like Ablett said, if Silvagni played on him a few years earlier Ablett would have killed him.

And towards the end of his career, he was still kicking bags of goals and getting 100+ a year. Between 1993 - 1996 he kicked 124, 129, 122 and 64 respectively. The averages come out at 7.3, 5.2. 5.5 and 4.1. So your excuse is very thin here. In fact, his twilight years were one of his best as a forward.

I wouldn't trust Abletts opinion about anything because it gets filtered through his world view that he was the greatest thing since slice bread and anything or anyone who implied otherwise, such as the thrashing he recieved from Silvagni every single time he played Carlton, would be automatically downgraded and explained away.

Abletts theory was that Silvagni didn't really have his number because he wouldn't, in his view, have beaten Ablett "at his height" when he was playing on a HFF. Well despite the fact that we'll never ever know how well Silvagni would've done on Ablett on a HFF there's a little issue that Silvagni isn't a HBF. He's a Full Back. He plays on the oppositions full forward. Why the hell would he play on Ablett while he's running around on a wing for most of the game?

Ablett is just bitter that Silvagni owned him at every opportunity.

Ha, remember when Milburn Slaughtered Silvagni :thumbsu:

so you resort to a cheap act of snipering when you realise you have no argument to say that silvagni didn't shit all over ablett and would have done so no matter how young ablett was. typical.

Yeah, typical Carlton supporters who boo Milburn every time he gets the ball when we play you. Get over it, it was like 10 years ago.

IMO the best 2 fullbacks going around in the last 5 years have been Rutten,Glass & Scarlett.Rutten only had 19 goals kicked on him in 18 games, yet Glass was All-Australian???

Regan ftw, I remember watching him as young fella, no bloke ever got more than 3 kicks on him a game, let alone goals.

Looking at your profile, you're 19 years old. Tut tut.

Besides, Regan had more goals kicked on him. I'll see if I can find that stat, he's had bags kicked on him from time to time and it was posted here. You also have to consider the quality of forwards he played against.

And don't give me this "Prince" rubbish, that's just a title.

You can do better than that, surely.

There were and have been better full-backs.

We all know the Jack Regan story.

What about Geoff Southby and David Dench? Combiuned they turned playing full-back into an attacking weapon, whilst stopping the likes of Hudson, McKenna, Wade, Jesaulenko etc.

And the likes of Langford weren't shithouse. There is still controversy as to how Silvagni was named in the 20..and then his selection at full-back in the actual side. Until someone can provide conclusive evidence that he was the best, then the selection will forever remain tainted.

Was Silvagni the only current player (at the time) to be announced in the team. He may have been the only one?? It may have been a case of trying to fit in at least 1, but possibly they picked the wrong one.

And to my mind Langford was better than SOS.
Langford was great no doubt - he certainly was the one player who troubled Sticks in his prime.

Personally I thought Southby in his prime was the best I've seen. I don't think he was ever cut up by a forward (Templeton maybe?) whereas SOS got cut up more than once. Dench invented the running full-back role that Scarlett does so well today. Moore, Dench, and Southby were all ineligible for the award because they were judging it. That's the problem with getting the experts to judge - the experts themselves can't win.

But SOS was the only contender for FB that you could swing forward - not as a last resort, but as a first. I don't think any other FB in history has kicked a bag of 9. SOS was so demoralising to forwards I once saw Sav Rocca call for the bench rather than play on him. Not a thing wrong with the guy - he just didn't want to be there.

BTW, wasn't Langford Hawthorn's FB in the '89 GF when Ablett kicked 9 goals?

Maginness lined up on Ablett that day and Langford got moved back onto him after he kicked about 5. Still the point about your effort to revise history is to discredit Langford and once again you fail misarably, no wonder your a moderator on the Carlton Board.

Silvagni shouldn't never have been a candidate for the best fullback of the century. The best I've seen are Langford and Dench, although the football historians will tell you that Regan should have got the accolade.

No wonder Silvagni was surprised as he wasn't even the best fullback at the time that team was read out - Langford was clearly the superior. Just another case of Carlton bias.
