Rumour Future of the club (Bevo, board, assistant coaches, football department)

Bev pre-match talking about him and the boys being on edge about their start and then coming out and conceding 5 of the first 6 goals wtf is that about?

Having listened to Grant, it’s either Bev resigns or he stays. I suspect we’re headed for a footy dept. overhaul where Bev remains and a number of others go.

There needs to be an explanation offered for why the team’s form is so wildly inconsistent from week to week and within games. Grant noted it a number of times and that they’ve been working on the inconsistency problem since the middle of the year, but why zero results? How could the team come out with the season on the line and play as poorly as it did in the first quarter yesterday? Why was Bev resigned to that happening? What is going on?

Leftfield idea, but wasn't he going to be St Kilda's football manager/director of football before we swooped at the end of 2014?

We sign a new coach for next season, Bevo moves to Chris Grant's director of football role with a unique insight into the pressures of a head coach.
That reduces the payout that would be required to move him on.
Then we start 2024 with a complete clean slate of coaching structure/staff

It isn't though, we have beaten nobody of note apart from Melbourne late last year and a wobbly Brissy earlier this year since the 2021 grand final.

They did say our best is in 15 min bursts. The start of the 1st and 2nd qtrs against the Pies was as exciting as anything that we produced in 2015/16, we just can’t sustain it and then the inevitable run of goals comes.

I can only recall something like that happening in the NBA, e.g. Brad Stevens of the Celtics voluntarily moving from HC to GM a few years back. Larry Bird and a few others had done it over the years I think. Think it was always a coach moving up while the team was still going well. I struggle to see it working in this situation, sadly.

Another thing I heard from a player is that there is near constant high school level drama in the playing group (not that we’re special at all on that front). That could be another issue. Saw a bit of finger pointing on the field yesterday.

I don't have links to current players, but same as last week have heard from a family member of a staffer that there are obvious issues post-match, some players notably avoiding each other, and (allegedly) stems back to even wins where positions in the circle were adopted to ensure some weren't next each other, and again allegedly, in one instance 2 players ended up looking decidedly uncomfortable as they did end up together! (No names provided, and also sounds 'high school drama-ish', but some of these guys are still relatively young, and not sure being paid so well and being in a bubble to a degree is a great pathway to real world maturity - sure they get media training, etc, but the degree of adulation, eyc surely can't be beneficial in many cases.) Anyway, I'm getting this second hand, and the perspective of one person, so grain of salt, etc.

Haven't watched the press conference yet but if Bevo was still looking shell-shocked by the result you'd hardly expect him to say I'm done. He'd need to time to mull it over privately and discuss with the club hierarchy. So of course he'd say he expects to remain in the job. No point starting a media story that will limit his future options.

I'm not saying he'll walk but I wouldn't rule it out either. Maybe after the Geelong game if not this week.
I think it'd be the fastest, least harmful way out of this mess.

Knowing your pragmatism and objectivity - or at least what you project in an anonymous forum! 😆 - I'd recommend watching it for context.

The point he starts questioning the journo asking questions and his collective cohort about understanding the game though - when the questions seemed more than reasonable, and if anything, softer than they could have been, won't do him any favours on footy shows this week, I suspect.

The scene is simple. If Bevo is coach round 1 next year, 5-10,000 less members we will have. If the coach don’t move him on after Saturday night, and the club don’t act, then there will be more scenes like Sunday night only worse

Something tells me the group is a bit restless over Smithy's departure, for one thing...
Any kind of off field upheaval can blow up on field.

I remember that before the infamous 186 game for Melbourne there had been issues and Schwab had been all but sacked, but the players (who actually wanted Bailey to stay) imploded after the drama and the result was Bailey getting sacked and Schwab staying.

That only made things worse.

Wow listening to Chris Grant from Sen this morning, what a car crash.

This club is lost. The board are all just hanging on with no clue what to actually do next. Someone put them all out of their misery. Major clean out out of coaching and board needed asap

It’s all smoke. He’s never going to come out in an interview and say “the club/players are wavering on bevo”

I urge you all to recall the press conference that Gold Coast did about 5 days before Dew was sacked “he’s our man”

Bevo is the man until he’s no longer the man. If the we have a board that collectively possesses just half a brain that will turn very quickly.

The crazy thing is that if we developed just one player like a Finn Mcguiness and played a heavy tag we would be comfortably 3-4 more wins in the bank.

4 close loses, Gold Coast Suns (Rowell), Collingwood (Daicos), Hawthorn (Newcombe), West Coast Eagles (Kelly). Been dominated by one opposition mid who we have just let roam free all game. Even Gulden could have got a tag against swans.

We would been at least having a home elimination final on just that one simple change/plan. It doesn’t fix everything but since Petracca ripped us apart in 2021 and we didn’t both reviewing the game…. We haven’t addressed this simple flaw.

It's not even that though. He talks about how at the bye round they started to see how inconsistent we are and they were discussing ways to address this.

We have been this way for years under Bevo, and many of us could see it, how did the board only realise a month or two ago? Why didn't this come up when we barely scraped into finals last year?

There is so much wrong with that interview that goes beyond the support for Bevo

It's as bad as I thought - or worse. How do you fix a team that isn't unified and some hate each other guts? Why wasn't this bleed stopped after it started with Hunter Dunkley? We are stuffed.

I know Chris Grant didn’t give much away on SEN this morning but based on a few things said.. speaking past tense, finishing with a BUT.. I still think it’ll come down to this weeks result.
It will definitely come down to the result. But the point is it shouldn't, if you can see things are broken, the outcome of one game is not going to change anything

I'm not sure they hate each other's guts (as much as that phrase takes me back to my youth!). The description I had was more awkwardness, not dislike or similar, but again is second hand, and one person's interpretation of body language. I'd be curious to know if anyone else has heard similar.
If it's a temporary thing that can be repaired - by Bevo or someone else, no biggie IMO. But if it festers and grows.... 😟
