Rumour Future of the club (Bevo, board, assistant coaches, football department)

I tell you what guys.

I don’t know if it was the trip to the rooms post game that I’ve mentioned a few times, but I’m genuinely flat about it all. Like more than post 2021 GF flat.

Might take a few days away from the board, I don’t know why it’s bothering me so much.
Been feeling that way all day, too.

Possibly because we thought the "bad old days" were over? 😕

Chris Grant did some magical things on the field.

Today he did something magical off the field - managing to talk on radio for 10 minutes and actually not say anything meaningful.
Sounds like he could try a career change into politics :laughv1:

Aside from a handful of flowers in the pot of dirt that I mentioned in another thread, being a fan of this team has been a chore for a while.

My wife is a football fanatic and she cant get her head around why I hate the game so much the past two years.

From the outside - the dogs are competing to be in finals both years, have some exciting young players and some legitimately awesome talent.
From our perspective - this has been torturous when the above means it should be super exciting.

Perhaps someone in the know could answer this. Is it likely that when Beveridge was signed for an extra 2 years would it have included some KPIs or did he get a carte blanche contract extension? These KPIs could have included finishing position on the ladder, finals reached or finals won. If no KPIs were stipulated this would seem a huge area of neglect from our administrators.
There’s not much transparency. Apparently we don’t have the 6 month payout clause handout clubs have to have, but it doesn’t mean there’s no early termination mechanism. If we negotiated one then great.

I’m not sure I understand the recent talk about the clause, what consists of a handout club? We’re equal 6th-10th in the revenue share model, why would this work for Saints and Carlton (who get less than us) but not us?

And I still think it's too late to fix......for Libba anyway (and maybe even Bont).

I'm all for letting Bailey Smith & any other grumpy bums go, but who the hell do you replace them with in such a short amount of time?

We need players who are invested - not blokes who I'm not sure are playing for the jumper (recent acquisitions and maybe Treloar is included if rumour on here was true).

We also need players with real GRUNT. Libba, Clay Smith types and anyone who will have a red hot go.

Poor B. Once again they throw the person with the least to answer for out to respond. This grinds my gears too.

The reality is that a club has two real figureheads. The Coach and The Captain.

The coach spoke after the game and reiterated his belief that he was the man for the job. This was not a statement directed at the fans. It was one for the clubs hierarchy.

The Bont was always going to have cameras thrust in his face the moment he turned up at Whitten or wherever this image was taken. It was best to have an informal presser and run the party line. This way he has some control over the narrative and doesn't have to deal with an unruly mob of reporters the moment he steps out of his car who firing gotcha questions at him. "does bevo still have your and the teams backing?" "Whats your opinion about putting cheese on an otherwise tasty egg and bacon roll from Barkers?" etc. etc.

The President and CEO will get wheeled out (pardon the pun) after the event and crisis management must be undertaken. Or when they feel the need to publicly endorse a coach...They're like a puff of smoke from the Vatican, whenever they appear. From that point on its just a matter of time.

Edit: Having just watched Bevo's post game address to the players. Expect The President and CEO to appear some time next week.

He's done.

All the commentary was about the rule applying to “AFL funded clubs”, and we apparently aren’t one.

Based on some recent articles it seems like North, Saints, Brisbane, GWS na GC are in the bottom tiers. Apparently applied to Cameron and Ratten’s last contracts.

In fairness, Bev has already done a presser and Grant has already been on radio. Given they’re going with a full on media response it makes sense for Bont to also speak and put supporters a bit more at ease. He’s the best representative the club has.

The only person left we could hear from is Bains. Not sure I need to hear from him as well.
If you want a comment from Bains just email him directly with some advice on how the run the club.

Take care ThePhreshOne, we are all angry and upset, but it could be a lot worse, we are not a bottom four side and I am hopeful some good will come out of this. Like I said before, hit a crisis, and decisions have to be made, problems can no longer be ignored.

And it supposedly applied to Carlton with Teague though, that’s why it doesn’t make any sense

Not sure if I'm alone here or not, but I actually felt quite a bit relieved last night after the loss.

As utterly diabolical as the game was, being at our lowest ebb (I mean it's all relative, we are not 3-peat spooners like North) and entering what should be a crisis period for the club means they almost certainly need to act, and not with any half/bandaid measures but with some real significant changes.

After so long frustratingly treading water we've finally reached the point of no return - in many ways it's as exciting as it is dire.
I was wrapped. And also gutted. It was the only way the cloud dreamers at the club could be shaken into reality. I still say Bevo is a genuine enough bloke that he walks post-season. He’s always had the best interests at heart and he won’t quit before the end out of pride and also not wanting to be seen to cut and run. I can totally see him proudly and sensibly leaving on his own terms postseason.

Bevo’s Brief

head down, despondent, holding back his despair.
I feel bad for him, put the bloke out of his misery already.
If he told them he's quitting, hopefully the boys lift for him one last time.

If the club and Bevo came out and said he's coaching until the end of the season - whether that be Saturday night or finals - then there's an argument that could spark a final emotional lift that could get them over the line against Geelong and maybe even in an EF. It's not a movie though, footy isn't just emotion and the better, more organised teams will end up winning the finals that matter.

I don't think the club will do it though, it would be unusual I suppose. But the past fortnight has been the circuit breaker so it does need to happen for the benefit of all concerned, likely once the season is officially done. At least if it can be done with the bye week then there would be some time for his achievements to be celebrated.

For all the hand-wringing over the state of our list on here and in parts of the media, there would be more than a few aspiring head coaches who would want a shot at a list that included some of our potential top-end talent. They'd need to do some work with a flaky bottom half of the list, but we know that can be done.

Im glad if it ends this way, its emphatic and clear and came from the players and the performance, that game is a coach killer of itself, a clear message to all, let alone the week before and the issues since 2021.

If the end came after ok performances and an ok result for the year then there's always doubt over whether its the correct call. doubt in everyone's mind including Bevo.

i dont think there are many left now who still believe.

my personal what if, is how much more success we could have had under Bevo post 2016 if we had strong management and leadership above him. what would have happened under a Neil Balme type?
