Rumour Future of the club (Bevo, board, assistant coaches, football department)

StKilda looked ripped early in the season - their players looked much much fitter - Mason Wood was a good example ,and he had a career best season. They absolutely showed us up in round 2 - all on the back of serious running power and endurance.

Having a tan after pre season looks great - but I want the list to run their guts out and get ultra fit in the pre season. And I want Naughts, poulter and Smith ( if still there) to shave their heads and focus on getting the pill, not preening and worrying about hairspray.

Business at the front back and sides is what I want..

We were unfit this year - and that is unacceptable.Skinner reserve is an excuse - it cannot be a reason. If Skinner caused a lot of issues - then not identifying this and looking at alternatives was negligence.

I thought the structure was going to be different for Bevo, his role is to sit on the bench and motivate players, but the match day strategy will be left to others. Ala Hinkley. Going after two ex coaches supports this.
If this were to occur then I’d be open to giving it a shot. Bevo plays the Macrae role on the bench as a motivator and guys like Dew, Lade, Cameron etc. make most of the tactical decisions on game day.

Bevo needs to be 100% on board with this solution though and not forced to do it or it won’t work. He needs to take a step back and allow the assistants to deal with the finer detail stuff whilst he takes control of the bigger picture side of things.

There’s an insider over on WOOF who leaked this weeks ago, even before we capitulated over the last few weeks.

“Had a chat with one of our board members yesterday.

They have heard the criticism of both fans and media this year, the board-member I spoke to admitted they didn't do enough with the assistant changes last season. Without going into too much detail they are looking to move Bevo into more of the Hinkley style coaching role, next season they are looking at setting him as the motivator, managing player relationships, rev ups, on the boundary line on game day etc, they want a host of experienced assistant coaches to set our ''game style'' and run the ''game plan'' on match day with Bevo taking a backseat to actual tactics.

This system has worked well for other clubs, currently Bevo does both, he takes on a huge amount of workload managing both player relationships and the running of game-day, might see a different look/attitude Bevo next season with the changes they want to make.

Right now it's finding a host of experienced assistant coaches to come in that will be key to our success next season.”

With us chasing some very experienced tactical coaches I’d suggest this leak is on the money with our coaching set up next season.

To be fair we very well may have offered him a severance package, which he hasn’t accepted - which was the original mail from Fronk. We probably cannot/won’t commit to a full payout (because with soft cap tax it’s likely to be upwards of 3mil) so there’s not much we can do if he won’t accept a partial payout
If all the intel is true,
we re-signed a guy for 2 years, tried to sack him a year later, but werent prepared to pay out in full so decided the better option was to just replace everyone around him.
I dont know about you but i have full confidence in our management and am extremely optimistic about our future:rolleyes:

As of tonight

-Mini-review has been happening since the bye, next review looks to be internal and not external, has already started (28/08/23)
-Losses to Sydney, GWS and Hawks have started to change the tune of some of our stead-fast board members - Still the case, Bevo will not have unlimited power moving forward (28/08/23)
-Still to be a minor board shuffle that was planned months ago (28/08/23)
-Rohan Smith, Webb, Martin, Varcoe and Spang are all being moved on, coaches are in line to take over, Stewart Dew looks to be one of them (28/08/23)
-
We would have to pay out Luke's entire contract if we decided to get rid of him early, currently that's until the end of 2025. According to Caro this changes when his new contract starts next season, we go into a 6 month payment and not full contract payment (28/08/23)
-Luke was offered a ''We'll pay you out some of your next contract for your own mental health / get outta jail free'' option, he declined.
-I'm still lead to believe that if Grant leaves they'll ask Lade to move into the director of football role (28/08/23)
-I'm lead to believe Bevo's next contract is on significantly less money giving us resources to chase other coaching staff (28/08/23)
-Chris Grant is selling the house his lived in for the last 400 years, might be moving on??? - Cleveland has reported that Grant will be moving on, yet to confirm with another source (will work on confirming) - 21/08/23 As of this post, I am told that Grant is not sure if he'll stay or not (28/08/23)

this makes sense and puts things into context.
so we are going into 2024 with what the board believe, and most of us believe is a burnt out coach, who is fairly cheap to sack at any time.
My tip is Dew or Cameron take over by round 5 next year

Ego perhaps? Might want another chance to show his coaching skill. Might also think there is a head coach role up for grabs in 6 months.
Well yeah it’s like why would anyone choose a coaching role over a cushy media gig? The answer is in where that individuals passion lies.

Media can be an easy job but for someone like Buckley who has spent the majority of his life inside football clubs, I’d suggest he’s one of the types that gets his kicks around being involved with a playing group.

Bumped into a friend last week who has known Bevo since his early playing days (hasnt spoken to him in very recent times).
We spoke about Bevo's more recent media appearances, and the pressure on his position. His comments were that;

Rates Bevo as a bloke, says he is a great guy
Bevo seems different to him, not functioning well and should move on.
Bevo will still believe he can take them to another flag, and will see threats to his job as another challenge he can overcome, why?
Humungous ego and self-confidence. the biggest he has ever seen in a person

The club was placed in an awkward position when our original assistants virtually left in one broad sweep. Gia to Essendon (still makes me nauseous seeing him in those colours) King up to the coast and Hansen leaving us high and dry with no notice whatsoever.

Club scrambled. Had to acquire assistants short notice, grabbed what they could get. Alas as they reached into the cheap assistant light pool, you get what you pay for.
I have never understood how this could happen. Surely assistants are on contracts and just can't walk out on the eve of pre season into another club.

It screams mismanagement.

Assistant contracts would have very different wording to that of head coaches. Hansen is a good example, would have been offered a higher position (I believe) and more money by the Blues. Doggies holding him to the deal would make us persona non grata amongst future assistants.

That's great news if true and we aren't moving on Bevo. But someone needs to be held accountable for this not happening last off-season.

I'll be disappointed if Martin gets moved on and Edge's results at Footscray speak for themselves. Everyone else has gotta go!

You say it in jest but I lost count of how many times this season Naughton was adjusting his hair while the ball was in the air approaching him.

He did it in the WC game a couple of times at least, and I had a fairly strong reaction to it. It also happened when he was in a contest and it got flicked/bumped and his hand instinctively went to his head.

We can talk about it in jest, but it's incredibly disappointing that when it happens he's not focused on the contest. He's a committed player and works hard and it might seem insignificant, but it's such a weird thing and I don't think it's doing him any favours. My son plays basketball with a headband, and the few times it's been knocked off his head he continues with the play and then gets it back when he can - so does any other kid playing on the court. How can a professional athlete not do that?

I can't say I've noticed Baz or Poulter be distracted by their hair in the way Naughton is with the headband.

Surely in a sport this size contracts would restrict assistant poaching while under contract without consent. Non compete clauses are common in workplace contracts.

It was early October when Hansen went, that left us up the creek without a canoe.

Maybe assistants can come and go as they please when they please.

Outstanding work BM. Most illuminating.

Interesting that Lade is basically earmarked for promotion.

We haven't heard much about him this year.

Does anyone have any Intel on his standing around the club or informed opinion on his performance this year?

Hansen had already been promoted to senior assistant in the weeks prior to him leaving, so there was no higher role on offer when he left for Carlton (maybe more money though). It always did seem odd that the assistants can just walk like that
