In part, I agree. We have had to sacrifice to get Ugle Hagan and Darcy in the door (ironically Geelong hardly ever had to suffer to get their Father Sons in the door) and that cost us some elite talent and depth which we could've used perhaps to get some midfield pace.

However, the results don't lie. Geelong have a winning culture. They just keep producing in finals and just when you think they're dead up they get up and are a step off a Grand Final again.

The home ground is a huge advantage as is the BS 'go home' factor but you have to admire their club.
I admire their club for sure, and I don’t blame them for exploiting natural advantages.

The GMHBA factor is not nothing though - let’s just say it’s worth 1-2 wins a season (I think it is comfortably).

If you go through the Bevo era and add a win or two each year it looks quite different. They’ve had plenty of finals flops but because they’re often top four they very often find their way to a prelim regardless.

That doesn’t take away from their great management, ability to execute trades and great drafting. It’s just that I think we hold our own better than people think.

We don’t have any obvious advantage over other clubs, but in the Bevo era have won a flag, played in another GF, made finals 70% of the time and had one losing season.

I think an orderly transition next year will be the best route. Bevo sees out his contract with full understanding and agreement of a new coach coming in 12 months. Bevo can walk out as a deserved legend, and the procees for new coach could start now. I think it helps the players if it's a no-drama procees.
The problem with this is that what happens if we start the year the way we finished the H&A season and finish top four? If that were the case I’d be dead against moving on.

If we’re languishing mid-table then I think everyone will agree it’s enough.

We need more midfield options.

When our key mids are down - we need to be able to make a few changes, keep the opposition guessing.

AEnglish really struggles against any ruck who is the same size.

Time is coming when Arcy will be our no 1 ruck.

We have the talent, have we got the coach to take advantage though?

They win finals at the MCG.

Their home ground advantage helps, but it’s their coaching, recruitment and game plan that gets them there.

Between their 2011 and 2022 flags they won 4 finals at the G and lost 9.

The point is that they keep giving themselves an opportunity.

Yep, the main criticism of the season was the losses in the first 8 weeks that saw us go 3-5 as it took us probably eight games too many to figure out that we should play Richards in the middle and Lobb down back. That cost us top 4, and we would have had the chance to weather coming up against an ascendant, rising Hawks team with 70,000 of their own fans with the double chance plus the chance to play a home final in either week 2 or week 3 against an interstate team. If we hadn't had lost to the Hawks, we probably would have lost one of two interstate away finals, and the conversations here wouldn't have been monumentally different.

I have every confidence with either Smith or trading in another key player next year, with Darcy and Jamarra a year older, that we can go out and dominate from Round 1 next year, and lock up a top 4 early in the season.

Bevo gets next year for sure. Our vulnerabilities were laid bare on Friday, not for the first time this year. The need for midfield speed is self evident. Trade has to take care of that. The Timmy Darcy combo is the other one. That's a balance they have to get right over preseason. And a tagger. I've already nominated Gags for the job. The option of a clamp just has to exist and I don't think Bevo is averse. If wasn't for injury, Jongy would have played in the 21 GF and may have made a difference.

That’s how I feel.

We blew an elim final in disappointing circumstances, but two sides are always bitterly disappointed week one.

I think we cured a lot of the things that plagued us in 2022-23. If that’s right then next season should go well.

I think if it doesn’t more or less everyone will want change, but I don’t see this season as anywhere near as disappointing as the previous two.

For what it’s worth, people think that Bevo doesn’t rate the ruck, but he absolutely hated getting smashed there back in 2020 (the Dunkley era). He just wouldn’t pick someone who didn’t offer anything around the ground.

We’ve obviously decided to back Tim in, but I think Darcy offers quite a lot as support and will moreso as he fills out.

I was very worried about our midfield before this season, but the Ed move worked and Gags and Sanders got their start. I hope we do more via trade.

But throwing Bont forward is not the reason we lost.

ofcourse not, however aside from Adz trying, there was no run from anyone through the middle.

It's the number one priority for me. We have a pretty formidable forward line in waiting, but if there's no supply there about as useful as **** on a bull. Astute opposition recognise this. Beat the dogs in the middle and you win the game. Don't, and you're every chance to get pummeled.

It's not rocket surgery for the opposition. If anything, it probably helps their focus. You guys in the middle have to win coz if you don't we're all screwed.

Enough of the sooking about Geelong. Started the season 7-0 winning two games in Geelong (against the Saints and Roos) while winning in Adelaide twice, at the Gabba and a flying Carlton at the G. Set up there season and gave themselves some much needed margin of error.

Can’t stand the pricks but they won’t ever be accused of leaving anything on the table.

I think he’s grown frustrated with English this year. I’ve noticed a few comments slip out in his post match pressers, where in the past he’d always defend him even when he was getting obliterated.

I was the one who brought Geelong into it, but it was to show there was a point where they were repeatedly flopping in finals and their Bigfooty board generally wanted Scott gone.

He’s far from young now and most of us thought he’d turned a corner last year. Now he’s back to being flakey as anything.

We’ve backed him right in but I wonder if we had our time over if we’d have aggressively pursued someone else a few years back and let him go.

You potted the list early this year in defence of Bevo. Now virtually that same list is going to go out and dominate from round 1 next year?

I’d love to have your confidence, and let’s hope that’s the case.

There’s also an argument that we might never have seen Richards in the middle and Lobb at the back without injuries and the coaching group reacting to that. It wasn’t a master plan from round one, probably a bit of fortune there.

Not that Bevo is alone in that. If Sydney win the flag this year it’ll be in large part because of Heeney playing in the middle, and Longmire has been playing him up forward for a decade. He only got serious time in there because they had missing players.

Darcy’s development looks pre-ordained, but I’m not sure about Jamarra. There are some worrying signs as well as the flashes of brilliance. Let’s hope the real breakout comes next year though.

That was doing my head in last was the uneven application of the rules. Hawks were allowed a lot of latitude and it emboldened them further.
And if we did anything remotely similar #free-kick Hawks
The quality of umpiring was really poor and it has been all year. But it was not the reason for losing the game. A lot had to do at selection and not having a plan B.

At no point did I suggest that umpires were the reason we lost. We were comprehensively outplayed across the park. Was just annoyed about some of the lopsided applications of the rules

I haven't read all of the posts since Friday night.

Tbh, too disappointed and heart broken.

I was there at the game, front row.

I am over losing with the same lack of fight and strategy.

To be messaged with the stats of bont being out of the action when the game was there to be won, makes me furious.

My view is that Bevo has to go. He has had his time, and it is time for someone else to put their imprint on our club and this list. Too many times have the same types of error and failure been presented.

I believe that Bevo is an average coach that caught lightening in a bottle once, and almost a second time. Never even close to a 3rd.

We will probably see Bevo waste another year with our club and Bont's prime, and then he goes.

Bevo should go now, and let a fresh voice try and take this team forward. Let feelings be hurt, but expectations clarified. Let's go to the next level. Mediocrity is the worst and takes us nowhere!

Looks like Murph is finishing up his three year stint at Fremantle. Will have acquired some good skills and knowledge in a different environment.

Good players don't always make good coaches. I am also against former players being part of any coaching or development team, yes that includes Boyd and Gia. I feel we need entirely fresh voices, and not a club protected, fan favorite, boys club kind of thing. Or anyone who has been a part of Bevo as a player, or former assistant.

We also need some hard love on the team to push the best out of them. Bob strikes me as someone who would rather give you a cuddle, than tell you how it is.

It is the old argument: do you get the best out of yourself due to a sense of fear (ie on the edge) or feeling safe.

My view is that it is a balance, but sports being played on the edge usually wins the day in a 50/50 contest.

Cuddling is for consolation.

I want a harder edge from our Bulldogs, and don't think Bevo or Bob gives us this.
