It's a fascinating study of both language and sociology. Its meaning and usage has now splintered in many different directions depending on country and context.

This is worth a read if either of those aspects interest you.

Most top teams have 2 or 3 former players in their coaching group which would suggest it is more about quality of the people than whether they played at the club.

I find the argument often put about in here that the club is a haven for past players to be somewhat illogical.

However, Ive come to suspect whenever this subject comes up that its not really a question of having past players at the club, but its one of which past players and how much irrelevant preconceived baggage that they bring with them.

I don't doubt that this place would be doing cartwheels if it was Matt Boyd or Dale Morris who's name was being put about as joining the panel.

Yep a bizzare take really.

Before Bob did his knee the first time he made the Victorian team as a small CHF.

Also was a leader during our success on and off he field and has remained involved in football.

Not saying it should happen as I do not know what coaching he has done from the inside, but for example maybe Bob has better forward coach attributes than Spangher. Played more their, had success and when moved back certainly had knowledge on how to break down opposition forward lines.

From what I've seen and heard it's more likely that Bob will be part of our media presence as well as helping out with our AFLW side.

If that's the case then he'd be an asset, IMO.

Yep that's my understanding, his main job next year will be in the media on one of the radio teams.

Bob would be a good person to take over Ladey’s gig as director of coaching for our women’s footy.

We’re always whinging about the tired old media personalities and their mutual backslapping cult. Not without some justification. But perhaps we forget what a different and refreshing perspective Bob brought with his weekly column. He talked about life outside footy and then usually related them back to footy.

I know he’s not everyone’s mug of decaf latte but at least he was different, intelligent, creative and thought provoking. There was also some reflected benefit to the club from his quirky media presence. Our players weren’t all just boofy “we’ll take it one week at a time, happy to take the four points” types.

Perhaps his column had run its course and Bob may have sensed that with his move to the West. An opportunity to take stock after his playing days had finished.

But he’s back and I’m very positive about it if his new role is in club media and PR. And if he eventually finds other roles in the footy department I’m happy to see how that unfolds.

Like him or not, he’s a good honest man who loves the club and was a leader in the golden years (and a few tarnished ones) from the mid-2000s to 2017. I know I’ve said we need some hard-nosed bastards around the club but we also need decent human beings. People like Murphy, Bont and Bevo are that, each in their own unique way.

Because Matt Spangher could only get our forward line to be the second most potent in the competition.

He just has to go.

weellll, there is a lot that goes into the bottom line score for - the forward players (we have some very good ones), the speed and number of times the rest of the team manages to deliver it into F50, etc...

For instance, despite being the best in the comp for number of inside 50s, we are bottom 5 for marks on lead.
But we are top 2 for contested marks.

So we bomb it in a lot, duh, we can see that.

Any room for improvement there?

(edit : I realize that one of the reasons we have so many I50s is that we bomb it long and quick, but surely bombing it to space in front of leading forwards like marra and naughton is going to result in better dividends than to a pack)

Aaron Black is ex Geelong as much as Higgins. He was there for 2 years and I think played some vfl footy post that there.

Bob is one of the most intelligent players to have played for our club. The notion that his wisdom and knowledge wouldn't be of use to the club is ludicrous.

I would have the exact opposite. Matty Boyd and Dale Morris are driven and are presently doing the work/apprenticeship needed to be leaders of a football club. Hopefully our football club one day in the future. Bob is not.
Bob Murphy is slightly older than Matthew Boyd and was a higher draft pick. Matthew Boyd had to do it the hard way through the rookie draft but drove himself to eventually become captain and lead the team through a very difficult period after the Rocket era where we inevitably had to rebuild. Bob could have been captain then and could’ve/should’ve been captain when Ryan Griffen was captain. Ryan wasn’t ready for leadership. Bob admitted he was flaky during this time, he said he didn’t concentrate when training drills were explained and would hop to the back of the queue, and would only walk out onto the training track when told etc. Yet he was writing whimsical poetry in the Age during this time he should have been captain when Matthew Boyd was doing the heavy lifting for the club. He was thrust into the captaincy after Jordan Roughead among others held the team together throughout the October 2014 crisis. Dale Morris was able to understand Jason Akermanis where Bob could not, they remain great friends to this day. Bob is wonderful but not necessarily a strong professional or even a person that would understand working class people that our club is forged from.
