Autopsy Game of the Year So Far?

Great game tonight, but I agree that the Crows v Sydney game last week was a bit better. Not just because of the result (well done Hawks, by the way) but the pace was a bit more frenetic, making it a little more entertaining to watch.

Finally an intelligent/mature Crows supporter.

Well done to you too. Well played.

I don't think many neutrals out there would take Rioli ahead of Betts. Hawks fans have seen Rioli play a part in 4 flags so of course they would take him first, and rightly so, but I'd be surprised if anyone else said they'd prefer Cyril to Eddie.

To be honest, depends what role in the team you need him for. No other forwards, I'd take betts. Got a Breust, roughhead and Gunston already? I'd take Rioli for the pressure he brings. That's what everyone seems to forget, Betts isn't sharing a fwd Line of players kicking 40 odd goals or more each.

He was last year. Walker kicked 59 (to be fourth in the Coleman). Jenkins kicked 46. So that's two he is and has shared the forward line with. Then Lynch who plays well up the ground and was up there in goal assists kicked 32 and Charlie Cameron who is still learning the game kicked 29. Also take into account that we played one less game than all teams bar Geelong when looking at raw numbers, with Hawthorn played an extra three games more. So how about average scoring for 2015 instead?
Eddie 4th
Tex 5th
Gunston 8th
Jenkins 15th
Roughead 17th
Breust 20th
Rioli 32nd

We are tracking to have a higher even spread this year of goal kickers and so far have not had a game with under 100 points from our offense. What has been very evident is how unselfish our forward line is, some times to the detriment when they should be nailing the goal themselves, but they love trying to bring their teammates into the game.

So Eddie last year provided more goals and the maniac defensive pressure with two other high scoring forwards. Eddie is sharing a forward line with some top line goal kickers.

Last night's game, Hawthorn Vs Adelaide was awesome. I may be biased but a high scoring, close , skillful and tough match is about all you could ask for.

Need to do your research first re:- forward line. Can destroy ones credibility if you don't check your facts first.

It was good to see the Crows backing themselves to play their running, rebounding game rather than trying to play a negating role on the Hawks. Obviously this led to some pretty quick transitions both ways but some seriously entertaining footy to watch. Adelaide are definitely up there this year, can't think of a better Big 3 than Lynch, Walker and Jenkins and have really found something with a few of their young defenders.

Rioli plays midfield as well. Was in there a lot last night

Everyone loves to hang shit on the AFL but they need to get credit for this start to the year. The rule changes have had a great effect on the style of game, with the rolling maul all but dead. This is the type of footy that makes our game more exciting than any other.
Agree. It feels like there's been more exciting games so far this year than the last 5 years combined. Add to that the competition is finally evening out after the Suns/giants affected the draft for so many years

I would like to see something done to properly address the ducking for free kicks situation, at the moment it is better than it has been but still there are a few techniques which players drive their head into tacklers or fall to their knees and are still rewarded. The rule is there to protect players- not to make them seek head high contact. I don't really know how to find that balance but I think when you watch the game it is plain to see when players go looking for high contact.

Last night would have gone close to game of the year if more than 45k showed up. Could have been held at Etihad imo.
Really? Who cares about crowd numbers when rating games? That Melbourne V North game the other week was horrible... only 12k showed up
Also a semi final side from last year deserves at least 3 games on the MCG every year.

Yeah the AFL needs to ensure interstate clubs get a couple of visits to the MCG each year. Even if they lose some coin.

Saints did it last week too and troubled us. Fast paced games where we can't control the flow have always troubled us. Both Saints and Adelaide took risks and caused us plenty of problems.

thought the same last night.
So many times the ball was kept alive in traffic rather than having endless stoppages.
a few silly calls but given the pace and intensity, that was inevitable.

Overall, quality game from two of the best sides in the comp.

k, so i wandered off to look at some stats, hardly think credibility destroyed. Betts doesn't have to share a forward line with as many players scoring as manyt goals. As i said though, I'd quite happily have him in my team. But for Hawthorn, he wouldn't displace Rioli. Furthermore, if you look at the AFL Stats for last year, Eddie more goals, less avg Disposals, lower disp eff, less avg marks, less avg hitouts, less avg clearances, less avg tackles, less avg goal assists, higher goal accuracy. It's the tackles, inferred pressure and goal assists that make Rioli more valuable. It would be an interesting question to throw to Slobbo on AFL 360 to find out who defenders are more worried about though.

2015

Betts 63 Gunston 57

Dangerfield 21 Smith 23
Hodge 21
Hill 16
Schoenmakers 15
Suckling 15
2014

Adelaide certainly the most reliably entertaining team to watch (and they seem to make their opponents play an appealing brand of football to match). Hawthorn also stockpiling some sensational thrillers (which is what you traditionally crave from defending premiers), and the Bulldogs remain attractive.

Swans vs. Adelaide my favourite thus far, mainly because it lies in stark contrast to what was once a dour, one-sided fixture several years ago, when the Crows generally edged them comfortably in a low scoring forgettable affair.

League-wide the contests have been very appealing. Even the listless losers in certain encounters have been shown up by some lovely football.
