I don't know what some people were smoking last night while watching the game cause I thought DYSON was next to useless. He's an absolute struggler who doesn't excite me in the slightest.

If you taped the game, watch it again and see what he does with the ball....not much imo. Today's Sunday Times over here rated him in our best 5:confused:..its got me f----!

The stand out players for me were (considering it was really a full tilt practice match with heaps of young kids on both sides) HOULI,NASH,MONFRIES,HILLE and LAYCOCK,PEV.. and HOCKING did some good things.

Houli really did alot of work around the packs and seemed to have the ball in his hands every few minutes when he was on the ground. Good signs from this hard working footballer.

Reimers looks to have that built-in aggression I like in a Bomber.:thumbsu:

Mal looks set to continue on from last year. Still got that clever handballing skill to get us out of trouble and was jumping and spoiling as Mal can.

Looking forward to seeing more of Dempsey and Jetta.

My prediction for 2008....Dyson will play 15 games for Bendigo this year.

AM I THE ONLY ONE WHO CAN SEE HIS MANY FLAWS????????

He made a few mistakes but Angus made more.. very encouraging sings from Dyson that he was willing to get the ball and use his pace... its only the first match of the season.. there skills will improve... He was a ball magnet for the first three quarters.. As Vossy says getting the ball is the hard thing...

Mcphee had a good first qtr, had hamstring tightness or something after that and was rested the rest of the game hence why he was hardly sighted. Should be good for the Doggies game though.

You might find that knights will rest some of the experienced players that played last night. Pev, Johnson, McPhee, Hille, Mal. I think he will get as much game time into some of the young blokes as possible before the season. see who is showing consistency and improvement.

I have to agree with this.

He got a fair bit of it but had no idea what to do with it and more often then not got himself into trouble. He got the ball moving in our direction a bit but for every ok thing there was a stuff up.

What I did like was his size and run. He looks like a midfielder now.

His attack on the ball was pretty good and he was actually trying to win it unlike the past few years were he would sit back and watch.

I think he can only ever play as a flanker and not a true midfielder as he doesn't have the inside nous.

Even though he showed a few signs last night I think the likes of Houli, Hocking, Dempsey have already gone past him.

thanks for the invite to drop by Merv...

good luck tonight - both teams are fielding young sides but the Bombers have probably gone further and are giving all the young-uns a run...good for you

it's got to happen eventually and you've had a pretty long run before 'rebuilding' but i don't think you'll be there too long

Port Adelaide and, to a lesser degree, the Lions last year showed that a rebuild needn't take 5 years...even though you stuck with the veterans last year, you've still managed to blood some exciting talent over the past couple of seasons and when they all approach 50 games, Lloyd and Lucas will still provide the fireworks up front and convert hard work

personally i suspect your 2008 will be similar to our 2007 - brilliant in patches and bloody ordinary in others...the good thing is that even if you aren't winning games, i suspect you will see some running, attacking football and, trust me, that will get you through the lean patches

Sheeds' legacy would have to be the number of indigenous boys he attracted to the club - you have some seriously gifted lads coming through and I will find it hard not to be cheering them on this year (when they're not playing the Lions ;)

Alwyn Davey in particular typifies that new type of football - i think he adds a dimension to your team that Rhan Hooper adds for us...the sort of player that you didn't know your team was missing until he took the field :thumbsu:

anyway sorry for my long rambling post - i just wanted to say all the best and that even though I suspect we will win due to superior experience on the park tonight i wouldn't be surprised at all to see your young brigade grab a few big scalps in the NAB...

...i just hope it's not tonight ;)

peace

good win guys - looks like it was last night

a lot of positives for you to take away (i don't really believe in taking too many negatives to heart in the NAB) with your overall tackling and pressure on the ball a real feature of your game

i think we were pretty rusty after missing our intraclub and we will be much better for the hitout etc - some of our new kids looked pretty raw but there were still some very good signs, Proud and Henderson in particular

i'll enjoy watching you play this year :thumbsu:

Hey beatnik, thanks for the kind words.

While happy with the win, i am just happy that our young players showed some signs and we look to have a reasonable game plan for a change, winning was just a bonus.

We had the drop on you with preparation so i don't think you have to be too concerned with the game.

Henderson would certainly have you licking your lips with the prospect of a forward line of him, Brown and Bradshaw and Luey will just get better as the season goes on.

Hopefully both teams have a lot to look forward to :thumbsu:

Sums up what I thought as well, he still plays indirect, he still cant hit a target due to the fact he runs at a 45 degree angle to where he wants to kick it (FF's nightmare) and he still wanted to squib most of the contested ball. Close to half time they said he 14 disposals, I couldnt think of one that was effective. No way is he in best 22.

Bring on the Doggies!:)

I was shattered by Houli's guts. There were two occasions on which there was a 50-50 loose ball, and he quailed. Shades of Gibbs; Houli went down a peg in my book (to mix analogies). I hope it's a one-off or that I was just imagining it.

Danny Chartres looks like Kepler's body, with Tony Danza's head stuck on.

Dyson showed nothing for me last night. I watched the game again yesterday on foxtel and he turned over nearly every posetion he had. His touches that went to a Bomber player ussually just luckily fell into a team mates hands.

He had next to no influence on the game. IMO would have been in the bottom rung of players on the night despite getting his hands on it a bit.

There are two ways you can look at Dyson

1) The way he played on Satruday is all you cna ever expect - in which case he is a spud

2) The guy still has zero confidence and we need to judge him when/if he gets some. Of course that assumes he still doesn't believe he should be out there which I get the impression of.

either way, he would want to do something soon as Reimers, Houli, Dempsey, Monfries have all gone past him in the pecking order, and thats not including the senior guys. Worrying.

Oh and CJ is another spud who should be worried.

I haven't seen all of the game yet (taped it), but one player I was impressed with was rhys Magin.

Looked balance, poised and used the ball pretty well. Showed some flair and advasive skills as well.

One rookie I'll be keeping a eye on at Bendigo. :thumbsu:

Agreed. The one in the last quarter was disappointing.

I gotta say, I loved the look of Mal last night, every time I saw him, he had his psycho eyes going in overtime. It was great to see. :D

And Magin, man, he looked 12 out there :D Still, did fantastic considering his size.

Jetta I was a little dissappointed with considering the hype, but everyone else, I thought played a great game.

It was a pleasure to watch.

Lets not get carried away re Mal... wait for him to meet a proper fwd like FEVOLA!!!!

I've got my ticket for friday, I can't wait, hopefully my doggy supporting daughter might be going to.

I hope there aren't too many changes, would like to see the kids get a bit more experience, before they are dropped to make way for the seniors.

If you pur your bias hatred of Dyson aside you will know that he played a pretty good game of footy. Still needs to improve disposal but so does half the team. His attack on the ball and man were vastly improved and he showed that he can get enough of the pill.

Id be guessing most who are bagging Dyson would not be happy if he found it 40 times and kicked 5 goals
Was his game great ? No it wasnt.
Was it an improvement on his 8 or 9 touch games ? Yes it was.
It was a step in the right direction. If you watch the game closely you would have seen a number of played missed targets they should have hit a number of times.
He still has to keep working at it but at least he eliminated most of the indicisive elements from his game and put himself near the footy.
It was an improvement on his general form of the last two years.

WOOHOO, go Dyson.

Seriously though, I am a huge fan of Ricky, as most probably know, but his game wasnt the best. It may have been HIS best, but there is still room for improvement. His kicks often missed the target and a couple of times I felt he ran a couple of steps too far with the ball. Having said that, if he continues to improve, he will be a solid contributor this year.

Also special mention to Houli. It looks like he may have finally realised he is a good kick. Alot of the time last year, he played too unselfishly, often giving off a short kick or handball instead of trusting his instincts. On Saturday however, he started to kick it long inside 50. Thats what we need more of.

I think you are worrying about it too much. I thought he showed plenty of ticker. Definitely no Gibbs.

Jay Nash - 28 Touches at 70% efficiency
Ricky Dyson - 22 Touches at 65% efficiency
Bachar Houli - 25 Touches at 96% efficiency in 5 clearances.
Read into that what you will,
But I am firmly planted on the Bachar Houli Bandwagon now! :)

I was very surprised that Gumby was named, given he had been in the modified group right up until the match. From an "outsider", it seemed a very silly risk. I hope it's not too bad and they really (really, really) nurse him back gently next time.

I thought Dyson was just OK. Definitely an improvement but still looks panicky and, imho, a long way short of the required standard. Disposal was very ordinary (loopy, hospital handballs. Had the lowest effectivess for the Bombers, with 64%)... but it's early days, and at least he was amongst it. I thought he also put in a short step on occasion.

Speaking of short steps... Saw the Houli "squib" late in the game and was not pleased, but am prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt. (Even Hird did one very early in his career). Hopefully, one of the coaches or senior players takes him aside (and maybe show him the replay). He'll learn from it and I'm confident that won't become an issue for him. He sure knows how to find the pill, has improved confidence and will continue to improve dramatically with every minute out there. I hope he's given a good run in the 1's early as he's a class act!

Wow! Lots to be excited about. Nash, Houli, Dempsey, Hille (!!!), Laycock, Hocking, Pev, Monfries, Nat-Rat, Reimers, Magin & Mal all showed some great signs. Everyone looking fit. Playing a very direct and exciting brand of footy. Great defensive pressure. Good blocking (When did you last see that from the Bombers?!? :thumbsu:). Skills definitely improved, Great run from defense and through the guts... All the youngsters getting into it.

I really enjoyed watching the match. As supporters, we're gonna get good value this year, regardless where we end up. I'm pumped for the Doggies, let alone the season proper!!! Bring it on!!

Shades of '93!! ;) :D :thumbsu:
