I guess im being harsh but his disposal was very ordinary at times.

Yeah, I agree. I think he wasted many of his disposals and still seems a little unsure as to what to do with the ball.

Only saw the last 10 minutes, but i'm about to watch it all on IQ... Anything in particular to watch for?

Look out for little Magin, his skill and composure was great.

Hocking, desperation, tackling and 2nd 3rd and 4th efforts at stoppages.

Houli and Monfries clearance work, they dominated.

Umpiring was very weak, they seemed to have invented a "protect the kids" rule, where any hard contact against a young player warrants a free kick, even when it is your own team mate.

I know, what was with that:confused:

A pretty well rounded performance with most guys showing a few good signs.

The Gumbleton injury was a huge disappointment, but in general gameplay, I wouldn't have said there were many negatives. The boys could of course do with a bit of fine tuning, but there's not a club without that issue this time of year.

I thought the gameplan was brilliant tonight, and in general, it was played beautifully. There seems to be a great importance in keeping the ball moving forward at all times, we're not kicking sidewards. They were running in numbers and just forcing their way through Brisbane's wall. Lovely to watch. The other thing that was great about it was that it remained that way all night, not like the patchy football we were playing last year.

Another thing I picked up on was how well we defended. We let Henderson and Brennan get away a couple of times, and that's going to happen, but just about every other goal they kicked wasn't easy. We contested a lot.

I think we've got to be careful not to read into this win too much though. The Lions were sloppy and gave the youngsters plenty of minutes. Come AFL season, it's going to be a hell of a lot tougher for a guy like Bachar Houli to get 25 possessions.

Nonetheless, it's exciting watching some of these kids play, and when we can insert our midfield and key forwards, we could be a pretty threatening side. But that remains a 'could'.

As for the guy listing Jetta's output as 'disappointing', don't read into it too much. He had 11 possessions on a night when the ball didn't fall for him, it's going to happen to forward pockets. Also take note that he used all of them fairly nicely.

Difficult to take too much out of this one. Skills from both sides were not fantastic and the high number of inexperienced players meant that pressure on the ball carrier was less than normal (Brisbane were terrible in this area and could not make a tackle all night).

Monfires, Nash and Houli were all good for you guys and should do well this season. My only criticism of Dempsey was that for all the risks he took, he was not that damaging with his disposals. Might not get away with as much in the regular season.

One thing is for sure, Brisbane are going to struggle if Charman goes down injured. Hille and Laycock had the better of Leuey and Tippett but that should be expected.

Don't want to rain on the parade because it is always good to win but just warning you that it was only a NAB cup game with both teams missing large chunks of their best team so don't get any delusions of grandeur until at least after round two of the NAB cup :)

Yeah we understand that we shouldnt go overboard, but what we will do is savour the win because of the performance of the team and in particular the younger players. All supporters would react the same way. We are all too aware that we beat Brisbane in February without Brown, Black etc. We were missing a sizeable chunk of our best team also.
Btw im not hopping onto the Myers bandwagon just yet. Was very quiet tonight.

If that is the case i can't wait to see the pressure on the ball carriers when we have a full team playing. The pressure we put on the ball carrier was awesome, not doubt about it.

Everythning else you said is fair enough.

Houli very good. His defensive side was better than last year but still needs work. His attack and ability to find the ball last night was excellent. Linked in well.

Hocking pretty good. Did a lot of the in close work and looked to be the player who had to shut down the clearance if we didnt win the footy. Found space well and had a steady possession rate. Solid game without being spectacular which will be his go.

Dyson was very good. Didnt do a lot in the last quarter but was in good form up to 3/4 time. The best thing was he actually attacked the play. Hardly any of the indicive crap. This game will be a real confidence booster for him.

Nash was very good but for a player of his skill he needs to cut out some of the turnovers. Had a few too many kicks go directly to the opposition for my liking but his overall game was very good.

Lovett-Murray was very effective at half forward. Good game.

Monfries was good. Will be very happy if we get that effort from Gus week in and week out.

Dempsey .Good. Only one poor kick which was very pleasing. Provided some good dash from half back. One of our better players.

McPhee hardly sighted.

Johns pretty quiet although he did do a couple of good things.

Magin, very good.

Charters quiet. Got a few touch's in the last quarter.

Dick , quiet.

Slattery ok in a defencive role.

Hille good around the ground. Reasonable in the ruck taps.

Laycock only average. Presented well when up forwad.

Myers. Had a quiet night overall.

Pears. Quiet.

Micheal. Struggled with the pace of Hendersons leads but was ok around the ground.

Ryder didnt do a lot.

Atkinson did some nice work when he was on the ground.

Pev was reasonably good. Steady game.

JJ was very good after half time. Ok firsts half.

Good work captain obvious :thumbsu:
I think that most of us are just happy that we won a Nab Cup game for the first time in seven years and that some of the areas we have been very poor in ( defensive pressure, maning the mark, running in waves etc) showed some signs of improving.

On EFC website is said that Lucas, Jobe Watson, Mark McVeigh, Andrew Welsh, Alwyn Davey and Dustin Fletcher will be returning for next week. Who do you see from our team last night that would be dropped?

Good call!

I was busy enjoying the game and watching out for the new players.

Now I think about it, their game plan was exciting and relentless. Great pressure both offensively and defensively. If that's the way they play this year it should be a pretty entertaining year.

I didnt really see any of that stupid stop check wait then kick short mentality. All that seems to do is build up pressure on the team with the ball until they turn it over.

Relentless running off the backline seemed to put the pressure back on the opposition for a change!

Well done Knighter! :thumbsu:

He showed patches, nothing special though. Probably not the best conditions for him.

Geez though, I have not seen the boys run through the centre in waves of numbers like that for so long. It was awesome.

Some good signs last night. Really liked the games of Houli, Hille, Monfries and Nash. Besides for Hille good to see these 2nd and 3rd year players play well.

Chartres would be first to go IMHO, probably Pears & Myers, Gumby forced out, CJ maybe as well
Could well imagine Magin out for Davey as a straight swap, but that'd be harsh.

A few thoughts I'd like to add to Ant's:
Houli very good. Didn't find a heap of space, but played well I thought

Hocking pretty good. Had a few awesome smash tackles when he came from no-where. Voss was particularly impressed with a few of them. Liked his game actually

He had a few brain explosions - picked out a Lions player 30m from anyone on HB... I like the way he was used tactically though

Lovett-Murray was very effective at half forward. Ran and carried and created

Monfries was good. Will be very happy if we get that effort from Gus week in and week out. (I think one thing we can rely on with Gus is effort)

Dempsey .Good. Only one poor kick which was very pleasing. Provided some good dash from half back. One of our better players. :thumbsu: Gee he's not an oil painting though, is he?

McPhee hardly sighted.

Johns. I liked his first half, went off injured some time after that. Has been hitting the tanning salons with McPhee

Magin, very good. Shoulda (coulda woulda) kicked a couple. Very elusive

Charters quiet. Looked a bit gangly & awkward

Dick , quiet. Only talking point was when the commentators lost the plot after this exchange: Dick missed a shot "Not a clever dick" then the ball ends up with Pears - "Surely he'll try a banana". They lost it for about 5 minutes! :D

Slattery ok in a defensive role. Didn't look as fluent as some others around him

Hille good around the ground. Still taps to space and then goes to pick it up

Laycock only average. Did cover good ground though, going arc to arc. Looks leaner than previously

Myers. Had a quiet night overall. Had a few toughish chances from the flanks

Pears. Quiet.

Micheal. IMHO looked a lot fitter than last year. Few massive spoils, we might even see the double fister if he keeps going at this rate

Ryder didnt do a lot.

Atkinson - liked his work. Commentators noted "good size" & not only that, good pace

Pev was used well I thought - goes much better when there's men around him to handball to, and isn't expected to create with possession

JJ was impressive, smashed some bodies and got the ball moving, looked very fired up. Might surprise a few people this year

Reimers: Loved his attack. Looks much better built than this time last year as well. Good competitor, calling it early but possibly a successor to Moorcroft/Mark Johnson as a hard-edged pocket-cum-midfielder

Jetta - new hair colour again, didn't do much, did it nicely though with little result

Houli was everything he wasn't last year.. I have been very crictical of him because he wouldn't back himself in the AFL.. Run with thefooty and kick it.. He was doing little bitchy handpasses last season. However, last night he had easily his best match for the club.
Nash has picked up where he left off last year, was probably our best on ground.
Dyson may become a player.. Looked good last night.
Dempsey if he can stay fit will be a star.
Monfries needs to work on his kicking but he looks like he will have a good eason.

Very happy with the win last night an while it isn't a true test of where we are at, it did show us where we are going.

A lot has been said about our run from defense and it was very easy to see that will be our style.

I mentioned last week after the intra club game that we handball too often through the middle and we did again last night.

We got away with it last night because we didn't have the pressure on us that we will have in upcoming weeks and months but we need to refine this.

I'm sure it's not Knighters design for us to handball as much as we have been and with more practice, better positioning and a lot more practice and experience, we can still have that running style but be a lot more effective or efficient in it's use.

Another thing to consider is we have shown our style now and coaches will now have a plan, that may or maynot work, to counteract it.
The challenge for us is to be very well drilled and efficient so it will be very difficult to shut down.
We are not at a stage where i think we can have a plan B, as they are learning a new style and need to dedicate themselves to learning it so it becomes second nature, especially under pressure.

I liked the ruckman resting in the forward line, as they are both capable forwards that can lead, take a mark or at the very least make a contest, but i'm still not sure how it will work with both Lloyd and Lucas in the forward line, time will tell.

Another encouraging sign was the few times there were groups of players around the ball and it was a close in pressure situation, we handled that very well and generally won those situations with some precision handballs and then out to a free man and off we went.

The pressure applied to the opposition was first rate and it didn't drop off the whole game.
This is probably related to our extra fitness, leg speed and mindset.

Monfries showed some very good signs in the middle and his ability to get to contests and win the ball around the ground was very encouraging.

Dempsey was ok, but was also a little lost at times and made a couple of poor decisions.
This is to be expected and he will learn a lot from each game he plays and every game he can string together is a real bonus.

Ryder was obviously very underdone but will improve a lot from now on.

NLM played a very good game and provided some strength and a dangerous option up forward.

Houli looked a lot more confident than last year and is a smarter player also. He still has a long way to go but the signs are very good.

Dyson was quite good and is prepared to take them on and back himself but he needs to use the ball better than what he did last night.

Hocking was solid and should gain a lot of confidence also and with a few games feel like he belongs.

Nash was creative and provided good run also but let himself down with disposal occasionally.

Pev's disposal was first rate and i am surprised no one has mentioned it yet and i can't think of one turn over he had.

JJ, was slow to get going but was coming into the game as it went on.

All in all it was great to get a win and next week against the Dogs is a good test as we are evenly matched teams, depending on who plays and should be a much higher pressure game.

I gotta say, I loved the look of Mal last night, every time I saw him, he had his psycho eyes going in overtime. It was great to see. :D

And Magin, man, he looked 12 out there :D Still, did fantastic considering his size.

Jetta I was a little dissappointed with considering the hype, but everyone else, I thought played a great game.

It was a pleasure to watch.

To be brutally honest I have to say that we are going to be struggling a lot tonight with our midfield, mainly because of the match up differences, Brisbane just seem too strong compared to us, I think we are going to crash and burn if we can't play some good attacking footy tonight otherwise they'll just run us over with their style of footy, its that simple. I'm just using my knowledge from last season but then all of this could be no problem for us at all, I'm just hoping that we have found a new style of footy that works for our midfield and for the whole team.
I think our forward line seems pretty solid for this game and our back line should do well with Mal Michael there to lead the team, hopefully Myers and Pears will have a good game as well as everyone else and I'm looking forward in seeing Cale hooker play, cause I haven't seen any footage of him at all since he was drafted and I'm interested in how he goes about it on the field.

In the end I'm tipping Essendon to win by a goal. Essendon: 89 Brisbane: 83

If our midfield proves me very wrong then I'll tip us to win by about 30 points.

Hahahahah. I was right. Then again I was wrong, Our midfield did prove me very wrong.
