Garlett Rejects West Coast

Been reading about this, there's no way the Eagles are dumb enough to do it. Surely they're just dangling the carrot out there to see what offers come their way.
HA HA pick 4 for a player never to become elite who is 26 next year. I thought we were dum with pick 11 last year.Wells is nothing more then a later pick around 15.

Does anyone know the key reasons why we drafted him to begin with? I recall someone saying that they wanted support for Yarran as he has known and played with him for a while. Just a coincidence, or was that the main reason?

Who cares really, because he is certainly made a huge in roads this year. He has been the suprise of the year for mine.

Talent?

Main fears that would've 'held him back' at the rookie level were his size.

Pretty skinny for a 20 year old.

Similar deal with Betts who was a fair bit on the short side at 173cms.

Thats a midget in AFL terms.

I think that the skinny thing would have been the main reason for him not getting picked in the national draft.

Recently we have had a habit of picking up 2 players from the same team in the draft because it helps them settle in and they dont feel awkward coming into a new team where they dont know anyone.

I know that we picked up a mate of Gibbs in the draft when we got him.

IIRC we got Gibbs and Austin from the same club, and Russell and Hartlett from the same club.

If there is a strong correlation between picking multiple players from the same club in the same draft, that would really support a non best available argument by WHs :D:D:D. Too much coincidence right there!

Austin drafted so we could bed down and keep Gibbs...surely not :confused::confused:

thats it... it was Aussie :D

For some reason, I had Griggers in my mind but I didnt want to say so

Nope... I reckon that we take the best available and then look at all the players around the same age at the same club and look at getting the best of the rest.

Unfortunately Harts turned out to be extremely injury prone and eventually got delisted because of that... he had talent, just couldnt get it together on the park at AFL level without breaking down.

Its not surprising that many players end up coming from the same clubs, after all the pool of source clubs is not that large, and from memory we used to get a swag from Sandhurst and Eagle something or other in the Bendigo zone so it is nothing new.

Best available would only be relevant for first rounders, after that its pretty much a raffle. The discernible differences between picks is minuscule and very much judgement calls after about pick 20. So after pick 20 other competing agendas come into play, need being one of them, but also homogeneity and the value of bringing another familiar face to help a higher more valued draft pick acclimatize cant be discounted as a value, and if as has happened with Garlett, that player also turns out to be a gem, all the better.

The fact is we dont know all of the criteria used so it is merely speculation.

or to put it into language BG2011 will understand, we should have taken Talia and some other spud to help him out.

Why would the eagles offer us anything when they don't need to. If Garlett didn't re-sign then he would go into the preseason draft and they have first pick. All they needed to do was to convince Garlett to not sign with us.

If this guy stood at 195cm the league would be on its knees and fearing what this guy could become.

6 goals for a 20 year old, plus a few more bags is sensational.

Small forwards dont get the recognition.

the article doesnt say the eagles were offering anything for him. They were talking about Lynch may be let go by the eagles and how Carlton are looking for a tall forward. They then say that garlett is no longer available as he is going to resign. The Sun just added him in the article as he is a WA boy and was out of contract.

Would dare say eagles hadnt even canvassed the idea of getting garlett.

Awesome news...

I go to all Vic games... and when we were going bad... there is only on thing that got the fans complementing our play and that was the pressure that Garlett continually put on guys twice his size... that is the best thing about his game...

This story made my day! And to think the Weagles were going to straight swap Kennedy for Garlett :p Sort of ironic!

Looking forward to watching Jeffy in that navy blue jumper for many years :)

Enjoyable read :thumbsu:

How Buddy inspired Blues sharpshooter Garlett

Carlton sharpshooter Jeff Garlett has revealed how watching his cousin Lance Franklin bust through the magical 100-goal barrier in 2008 had provided the ultimate spark to realise his own AFL dream.

While the respective mothers of Garlett and Franklin are sisters, the cheeky Blues forward also has Fremantle's Des Headland and North Melbourne's Cruize Garlett as cousins and claims Collingwood livewire Leon Davis as an uncle.

Another quote from the story:

Garlett has formed a potentially lethal small forward combination with the gifted Yarran and veteran pocket dynamo Eddie Betts.

Veteran? He is 24 ffs.
