Gary Ayres award (2024)

Did this get announced? I must have missed it
It’s the coaches votes so I’d guess it will be announced during the week.

Neale was only 7 votes behind Heeney and the GF gets a 1.5x multiplier. Realistically he only needs 5 votes to win it and given he was 2nd in the norm smith voting, I’d say it’s likely he will win it.

Sometime today or this week we should find out who the winner of the 2024 Gary Ayres Award (Best Player in Finals) is?

Someone playing four games is going to defeat someone playing three games.

Not necessarily. Martin won it playing 3 finals games (2017 & 2019). The same for Sam Walsh (2023), he won it by playing 3 finals games.

Ah Chee averaged 12.5 disposals and 2.5 goals per game. The silent contributor for the Lions I think. He had a really good finals series.

He did just as much without the ball too, often playing on the oppositions best interceptor.

Played on Stewart and Blakey. Neither had much influence.

And Whitfield too from memory. Not sure who for the Carlton game but likely had a defensive job on one of their rebounders that game as well.

So happy to see people recognise what he is doing

Info now updated thanks to announcement of Lachie Neale being announced as winner for 2024.

Best players since 2000, where does Neale rank with this latest award? Probably a discussion for another thread.

Lachie Neale
272 Games
128 Goals
2024 Premiership
2x Brownlow medal
1x Leigh Matthews Trophy
1x AFLCA Champion Player of Year
4x All Australian
5x Club Best and Fairest
1x Gary Ayres Award

Congrats Neale - his cleanliness at ground level set the tone in the GF

I remember one of the QF against Richmond he had zero touches at quarter time (must be the only time ever in his career). No such concerns Saturday

Enhanced his reputation considerably, especially given the injured foot

Lunchtime

This section is missing at least 3 players, I believe.

Premiership/Gary Ayres - In Career

Dustin Martin: 2017, 2019 & 2020

Lachie Neale: 2024

Patrick Dangerfield: 2022

I was talking about this season. At the time of posting a Brisbane player (Neale, 4 games) was going to defeat a Sydney player (Heeney, 3 games).

My point still stands...a player can still win the Gary Ayres Award and not play 4 Finals matches, they can play 3 Finals matches and win it, they just need to play really well and get a high number of votes.
