Gawn and Grundy - a failure?

I find it funny how in 2018/19 many people kept insisting that Grundy was a better player than Gawn but now they're saying "well in hindsight he was actually never that good."
Grundy in 2018/2019 was a terrific player. It was like having a ruckman and a midfielder at the same time. He played well as a link through the middle. Won the Copeland and 2x AA. He fully deserved it. But his impact was never as a forward. Only a 1st ruck who rucked pretty much all game. The only issue is that as a ruckman, he just can't take contested marks.

Don't know what happened to him from 2000. Not sure if the whole COVID thing had a significant impact on him or whether the 2019 Prelim against GWS put him under immense scrutiny when he basically was in the ruck against no one, had 70 odd hitouts and we got done. We are now talking 4-5 years ago when he was in his absolute best form.

I think also many Pie fans were annoyed when he said in 2020 that a premiership doesn't 'define' him, which I think was taken out of context.

But, as a $600k full time ruckman for a club, he would be worth it. Swans, Port, North, Geelong would be clubs who could do with a player like him.
But as a forward, he offers nothing.

I see Melb are trialling him in the 2s as a forward without a lot of success

1 goal in the VFL against Coburg who haven't won a game all season and sit for a % of about 50.
The guy isn't a forward. Never has been. He is a ruckman only. Poor judgment in going to Melbourne. A club that makes him their number 1 ruck, will get value out of him.

No club will want to take on his contract unless Melbourne pays a fair whack of it. He’ll be languishing in the twos until Gawn is injured / retires. Grundy going to the Dees just reminded me of the stupidity of Preuss going to north where he was clearly going to be the second option to Goldstein

More than halfway through the season and its fair to say the Gawn and Grundy deal has been underwhelming.

Can we conclude it a failure?

Not if you are a Melbourne supporter.

Grundy was never ever going to be a forward or contribute to the forward set up.

He is a one trick pony always has been.

Struggled with overhead marking when in a contest.

Would tap the ball forward down to the ankles and have no impact.

I can't believe Melbourne recruited him, they have the best ruck and potentially the greatest ruck of the modern era.

Respect to Gawn for even allowing this to be attempted.

It's looking like a fantastic get for Gawn. He's been able to lower his load through most the year. Is now looking fresh going into the pointy end of the season ready to cover the full load. Unfortunately for Grundy he is the collateral for this to happen.

Game has simply passed Grundy by.

His game is being an around the game utility ruck which was fine for a while a decade ago but now he's just too slow and gets in the way.

His only elite attribute is boundary throw ins because he has strong legs. That's all he is really any good at

He's rubbish at everything else now.

Brodie 'I want 7 years' Grundy. He's buggered up a great career he was having, and pissing away a likely flag with the pies. Great work from his greedy manager.

Much like when an early morning scurry after the booze goggles have betrayed you - I think you’ve got the wrong Grundy there.

Also removed a chess piece from the board in terms of opponents! :D

Grundy is a good player and will find another club.

Grundy's strength is he is a play all day single ruckman which incidentally is Gawn's strength which makes this one of the most bewildering trades of all time.

Melbourne have been pretty good with their list management in recent years but this trade was always bizarre, made even more bizarre given Melbourne are still searching for forwards.

I think it was more desperation with them being in there window now. Yeah they needed a forward but there has to be one available and willing to come across.

Sometimes when your in that window you have to take a risk that just might not pay off. They still might walk away from all this not too bad off.

was never going to work out well.

they're both number 1 ruckman so they're realistically just taking time out of the other. if either had the goal kicking prowess of say paul salmon it'd be a better trade realistically but neither are that potent infront of the goals.

Grundy is a great player, but since he's been out of the team, Gawn has excelled and Melbourne has won games consistently even without Oliver and Fritsch. If he comes back into the team and they lose and Gawn plays a crappy game, the answer will be a definite failure.

I think they know Gawn can't play as the sole ruck for the whole season - so Grundy has allowed him to not be too banged up going in to finals. On that alone its a win for the Dees... what it means for Grundy / the future who knows.

Gawn was injured though. He was not saved for one late push. And even if that is the strategy you don't need to spend $600k on your second ruck.
