I just hate the arbitrariness of it all. Teams have got PP's before in the past for winning more games than the Blues did this year (so either they shouldn't have got it or the Blues have been screwed over) and now the AFL has made up a rule and applied it on the fly.
PP by media trial, expect only sides such as GC/Brisbane/Melbourne to ever get one again.

They should either scrap it all together or bring it back to a results based criteria, this whole wait to see how outraged everyone will get and make a decision based on that is crap.

Melbourne getting pick 3 for Frawley when Franklin could only muster Hawthorn pick 19 was the biggest concession given by the AFL that i've seen IMO

Not really when you actually understand the concept of compensation picks. If we finished first and Hawthorn 15th, then Frawley would've netted pick 19 and Franklin pick 3. It was dependent on ladder position, it had nothing to do with concessions. Continue believing the conspiracy if you want though.

Priority picks are a disgrace.

The worst teams already get the top draft picks.

Perhaps belongs on the trade hypothetical thread but what would be the most anyone would trade for these selections?
Great and fun question.

I'd say one objective method would be to say: Where do you have Mature Player X in your draft board, work out that pick's points, and discount by 20%.

Example, let's say "Club A" values Shane McAdam at Pick 30 on their draft board...

Pick 30 = 629 points

Discount 629 by 20% = 503.2 points = Pick 36

"Club A" therefore offers Pick 36 (or closest to it) for the draft rights to Shane.

NOTE: Reasoning/objective method is that this is the discount formula used for Academy and F/Sons.

Just what bottom clubs need. More mediocre state level quality players. Pass.

Richmond will get Lynch for Free.
Collingwood may force GCS to trade May.

GCS and Carlton get state player access and no priority picks.

Yep, they system is fine :drunk:.

But hey, let's wait and see, maybe, just maybe these clubs will find a way.

It's not like that's the only player you'll be able to draft/trade in. You'll probably get McGovern. You're going to get the #1 pick and ~#20. You've got Cripps, McKay, SPS, Curnow, Dow, Weitering and others to build a future side around. Docherty will be back next year. If you get smart with your trading you might be able to fast track the process by trading out next years first round pick for another top 10 pick this year (like Melbourne did when we took Oliver and Weideman in the same draft). You've got a free hit at a state league player with plenty of examples of similar types running around at other clubs who would easily best 22 at the Blues.

There's something to work with there. My post was in response to one of your supporters lamenting they wouldn't pick up a "gun" with the state league free hit. Not everyone on the list has to be a "gun" even premiership sides consist of solid B+ type role players.
I’m just laughing at this suddenly being the AFL’s solution to give struggling clubs a boost. Funny how everyone on Bigfooty is highlighting the rarities like Kelly and ignoring all the other flops. The whole point of the priority pick system in the first place was to give struggling clubs a boost. A pick was never going to immediately boost, but it at least was a good chance of turning into a decent player in the future.

Giving priority access to state league players is legitimately one of the dumbest ideas I have heard. These are the blokes who weren’t good enough for AFL. Of course there’s a couple of AFL players hidden away somewhere but do you honestly back Carlton and Gold Coast to just find them in an instant?

It’s just ****ing laughable how we’ve been bashed all year for picking up washed AFL players like Mullett, O’Shea etc but now apparently being given priority to possibly draft another O’Shea is a boost for us. ****ing hilarious.

Nobody on this forum can post with any sort of impartiality. Nobody wanted Carlton or Gold Coast getting any assistance purely because it affects their team. So now when they get a garbage ‘boost’ which is really nothing at all opposition fans are now acting like it’s going to help. You and others on here are not fooling any Carlton fans.

It’s absurd. Tim Kelly comes into the league and suddenly the AFL thinks that state league access is what struggling clubs need to propel them up the ladder.

Far more likely we’ll end up with some bloke who was never cut out for AFL than a bloke who can actually contribute at the club for years.

State level players in current Geelong team:

Stewart
Kelly
Harry Taylor
Menegola
Abbott
Geelong are exceptional at finding these sorts of players. Why in the world would you highlight them like what they do is easy to replicate?

This also sets a precedent. Every year now the bottom few teams will want, and expect the same assistance. We just end up in the same cycle as when clubs got early priority picks.

No set of circumstances (That have lead to a club needing assistance) are the same. No rebuild/reload/rejig is the same, and it's certainly not linear. The majority of rebuilds don't end up in premiership glory.

There will always be crap and poorly run teams. It's not bloody pass the parcel and every kid gets a prize.

Dees have found Fritsch and Vandenberg in recent times but without a core nucleus of talent these players would be worthless. Still can’t fathom why Carlton didn’t get a PP when past clubs have.

Guessing McGovern is unlikely now?

Brisbane seem to be doing it right. They need to look at their own backyard to work out what they want to do to get better.

System is fine
Two massive premiership droughts have been broken in the past two years
Seven different teams have competed in the last four Grand Finals. This is the third year in a row that different teams have played off. Even with the dominance of Hawthorn and Geelong, Ten different teams have played off in Grand Finals in the last ten years.
Carlton got Dale Thomas for free and Sydney got Lance Franklin for free. Collingwood got Mayne and Wells for free. Its not a recipe for guaranteed success. How many top line free agents have actually played in a premiership?

Did the Cleveland Browns ever get relegated or has your analogy fallen flat on its face?
No they didn't, but they never stooped so low as to cry to the NFL asking for help. Pathetic organisations
