Great article penned by Isabelle Huntington in the Age...

This paragraph says a lot about the desire and passion of these girls to play...

"For those parents who may worry about letting their girls play football because of the heightened risk, my message is to not let fear stop you. The recent spate of ACLs can be disheartening, but if anything it provides an indication of the drastically increased participation of women and girls in football, which has immeasurable positive effects for society. The health and social benefits of girls playing footy far outweigh the negatives associated with injury, and the research and preventative measures will only improve too. I’d go through the rehab again and again if it meant the chance to experience this dream I’m living."

Just watching Carlton ... they were very glad the girl that slipped thru to them at #3 was there..they rated here as #1. Of course thru nominations of location does complicate it but it would seem this girl was and is at least as talent as NinaM...

We couldn't draft Prespakis, who only nominated for Victoria Metro unless I'm mistaken. Otherwise probably would have had her and Morrison as 1 and 2.

Prespakis has been playing the game for at least twice as long as Morrison has though. For someone who wasn't playing football 2 years ago, Morrison is a gun.

She ended up nominating as Vic Metro - I remember reading an article on Prespakis and she discussed how she had spoken with Geelong, looked at the option of moving to Geelong but when she looked at her life outside of football (family, uni etc) that was located closer to Melbourne, it was the non-football related things the swayed her decision to stay Vic Metro & hence Carlton.

I understand that its a rigged outcome to a degree ..but when thats the outcome I wish guys like Harford would not say stuff like we rated her as #1... its a bit disingenuous ..we may have rated her as 1 or 2 but could not draft her.

Did Harford say that? What a campaigner; typical Hawthorn tool.

Prespakis is a flat-out match-winner, she'll be the best player in the comp sooner rather than later.
Her and Nina shared both the major individual awards in their final year of juniors, tying for TAC cap MVP award and also the U/18 Champs MVP award.

It was pretty deflating after watching her throughout 2018, thinking the Cats would be in the box seat to draft her for the majority of year only for the Metro/Country nomination options to be introduced not all that far ahead of the draft.
I was on freakin' tenterhooks awaiting to hear whether Prespakis would nominate Geelong, Metro/Geelong, All of Australia (all awesome outcomes) or just Metro (very very bad).

Which is why I think the nomination deadline is just about more interesting to fans than the draft itself - once clubs (and fans) are aware of which zones players have nominated, the draft almost takes care of itself.

Winty makes a very good point about Nina's potential room for development given her short time in the game.
She is a far superior athlete to Prespakis and probably has just as much natural ability.
Prespakis is something special though, and if she'd been available to the Cats last year I reckon our Nina might have gone at #2.

Morrison's Vic Country teammate Tyla Hanks, another who was off-limits to Geelong, is not far behind Prespakis and Morrison; she is diminutive but is incredibly clean with the her hands, apparently also an excellent leader.

IMO; open 2018 draft goes 1 Prespakis, 2 Morrison, 3 Alyce Parker, 4 Tyla Hanks

All good info ..thanks for that CC. I guess its a complicated setup and issue.

I can get a bit frustrated with the girls feeling that they have too be prickly in defence of their comp and their obvious efforts...but maybe they do have this underlying accemptance that their efforts far outway thei skills.. while they see girls like the ones you mention coming in. These newer girls who have played when younger give undeniable credential to the worthiness of their efforts and eventually the comp. While not afl or even vfl standard but one can see in several of the girls bit by bit a better range of ball use.. and this Carlton girl , perhaps a Joel Selwood type where as NM is more a Fyfe .. that the longer she is in the system she will develop.
One feels that the more they do come in the comps credentials will get more stamps of approval.... but for the moment I still think they do need to remember that the comp is still in kindergarten with the parent paying all the costs...

and this is of course a part of why the draft is why it is. 7 week comp. hardly any getting good money. ...its why I feel we must keep in mind that allthough its great if Geelong wins and are competitive... the paradigm for their core aim is to give local girls a aspirational target. We set out to use the draft which is a compromised value , and as North has shown ..it may be that trading in players is the way for immediate success. We might have to absorb that ultimate success for us should not purely be about wins and Premierships for the time being. Perhaps by targeting manly locals we will have a more glued side that will mean they can stave off raiders next year.

I think your last paragraph sums it up nicely Turbo.

I might be wrong, but I think supporting the local region was a big part of our push for a license - which may be why we didn't go particularly hard at raiding the comp a la the Tassieroos.

I suspected early on that North's approach might yield quicker and better results in terms of Wins.
But I think our approach will benefit the club and the region in the long-term.

As for frustration as to the women's 'prickly' defense of their comp - I think they are frustrated themselves.
The AFL has obviously dipped into the kitty to enable the comp to exist and has generally been very supportive .... and yet some of the planning has been haphazard and short-sighted. In some ways the VFLW is a more legit comp.

It's gonna be tough watching Prespakis get better and better over the 2019 season while poor ol' Nina sits it out, but overall I can't pout too much, as NM is such a quality person and a highly watchable footballer. I just hope she is able to recover and once again attain the standard she'd set for herself prior to her ACL.

Very nice coverage cursed cat

Don't think this is worthy of it's own thread so this is probably as good a place as any to say this - was listening to K-Rock tonight, and after the JLT game they mentioned the Falcons' girls team start their season this weekend. Wish the girls all the best for their premiership defence this season. :thumbsu:

For those interested in their fixture for the season ahead, it's as follows:

March 3 - vs Sandringham @ Frankston, 2pm
March 10 - Bye weekend (Labor Day long weekend)
March 17 - vs Gippsland @ Deakin University, 12.45pm
March 24 - vs Bendigo @ Deakin University, 1.00pm
March 30 - vs GWV Rebels @ Ballarat, 2.30pm
April 6 - vs Dandenong @ Frankston, 1.00pm
April 14 - vs Western Jets @ Downer Oval, 12.45pm
April 21 - Bye weekend (Easter)
April 28 - vs Calder Cannons @ RAMS Arena, 12.45pm
May 5 - vs Northern Knights @ Deakin University, 1pm
May 11 - vs Murray Bushrangers @ Avalon Airport Oval, Werribee, 12.00pm

Taylor Harris starts off her match against the Pies how she finished off against us - hitting the post with her first shot on goal ;)

Vescio missed a shot from the top of the square too. Shows how well McMahon and McDonald played last week though - both those players were barely a factor considering how often the ball was up their end.

Is someone playing funny buggers at Fox ... watching the AFLW match Pies V Blues when suddenly it changes to the gay parade in Sydney?
