My contacts up Central Murray way tell me that Jason Dennis is great when things are going well...but he can be awful in a losing side..or a side under pressure..How much are St Marys spending to get their team on the track?

I played with JD when we had a middle of the road year - finished 6th i think for memory and he's a super player.

Was dominate in games we won and when we got pumped - he's a class act and ripping fella!

As mentioned earlier loves the hard stuff and has class to boot with goal kicking ability

Will be a great addition to St. Mary's where he'll join former team mates from Abers in Woodsy and Case!

Dav will be a great coach...for one week...crap the next and good the one after...he'll be a great role model one day...crap the next week...awful the week after that..He hasn't got the stability to offer himself as a good coach nor role model. Even with great cattle..the farm manager is unlikely to get respect out of his players...and I'll stick with whoever said it earlier...he'll be sacked before season end...
i highly doubt that any of that will happen

Just a curious observer but what has Davenport done to cause all this hatred towards him?
Doesn't anybody want to give a bloke a fair crack at doing a super hard job?
It is very hard taking on a new group and satisfying 100% of the people let alone 100% of the playing group.
Does the bloke get any kudos for taking on a bottom of the ladder side and trying to improve them?
Has the good old clean out occurred to rid the club of the so called superstars that took them to the bottom?
I dont know him but I wish all the coaches good luck and fortune.
Not many people commit to such a labour intensive second job with third world hourly rates of pay.

While not everyone agrees with Davenport's manner or methods, he is doing his best to bring a level of professionalism and structure both on and off field. Recruiting is always going to be difficult for a club that has had very little success, however I believe he has signed a couple from the VFL (one kid from Werribee and Fitzgerald, who played 2-3 last year), a few from the EFL and have heard there are a few more coming. They won't go from cellar to finals in a year, however I do agree that he should be given a chance to succeed or fail before being judged...

heard that st joeys have recruit the services of bannockburn hard nut justin bliss

Been around a bit Blissy. Would be closing in on 40 but would be one of the fittest blokes around. Had some quality seasons at GWSP. One of the hardest and toughest blokes you could see on the field; just an animal at the footy.

Hey Boy Wonder...I've heard Grovey have picked up half a dozen lesser known players that can play...Obviously Adam Donohue will be a good GFL player..and I've heard Reardons brother is playing there...and a multiple best & fairest from the wimmera...didn't catch his name...no big names but some quality.

Unfortunately this is the problem with the Grovey footy club... How can you ever hope to be a top 5 contender when your recruiting revolves around getting kids from bfl clubs whilst other clubs continually recruit from vfl or strong metro/country comps??? Yes the club is heading in the right direction in terms off turning their reputation around but there's no money there, they cant get decent sponsorship which astounds me considering the ammount of business around the Grovedale and Waurn Ponds area..

There is a good ammount of talent around the midfield, but they have lost Johnson, Murfitt x2 and Grayling meaning there is basically no height anymore.

The majority of last years side remains tho and with another year of gfl under there belt plus a handful of unknown recruits and a massive pre season ( the boys have been told they have to do 300 push ups and sit ups a day!! ) they should improve but I think top 5 will be a long long way off.

Well I imagine this is the problem with a club ranked around 6, 7 & 8 on the ladder...these teams(like Grovey) can't afford to lose any players..and they don't have the buying power to snatch the big names like the top 5.
Realistically the club can't be set up to spend $200K plus like the top clubs do..Credit to the clubs that can handle that sort of budget. Clearly Grovey is not in that position.
Sounds like you're a frustrated Grovey supporter Tim...perhaps you could put your hand up and get on the committee if you're not already and help the club raise some cash??

Frustrated yes.. Because I think everyone can see the potential that Grovey could have. There basically in an area by themselves which is probably the 2nd biggest suburb in Geelong, Have always had an abundance of talented juniors/teams that dont stick around, and they have a home ground advantage that most other clubs dont.

I dont think money has much to do with it.. Look at South Barwon a few years ago, they were a rabble but they've been able to turn it around to become one of the strongest local level clubs in Victoria. You seem to be from Grovey or no people up there, if so why have they played 3 finals series in 30 years???

I work for myself so I wouldn't be much good on a committee but I do raise some cash for the club every 2nd saturday!!!

I do know people well at Grovey...and from what I understand the club has never been in better shape on the field..Raidme did a great job setting the culture in place...now they have the Horsham bloke as coach who will get every ounce of talent out of them.......Grovey is probably my second team..I'd like to see them do well...they've been going about their business quietly...They may surprise a few sides this year. However I know they spend probably half of what teams spend....so this has to be taken into account. There's no doubt they have underperformed over the years. Apparently they are a tight bunch of players/mates....this can go a long way in building success....that's how it started at Sth Barwon...and some cash.

have heard there is quite a few players at st josephs not happy about about the money being payed to recruits. some of the younger guys are worried about not getting a game when guys like the carsons are getting payed huge money

very true go longer alot of whispers coming out of the joeys that alot of the players are not happy rumour has it that a few are on the move.

He'd be 35/36.

I know this because I was his captain at GWSP in our U/18 team and I'm still a few years off 40. ;)

This sort of thing happens at a lot of clubs. Clubs do need to be careful because a couple of things can happen, the money may run out, then the paid players leave and what are you left with. Or you can end up with a list that are just there for the coin and dont really want to be there for the club and success.

It is an interesting conundrum. Clubs must be wary not to destroy the fabric of their club by bringing in highly paid recruits. The strong clubs seem to do this well.

Bell Park $1.40 Newtown $2.20
Colac $1.90 South Barwon $1.75
Geelong West $1.85 North Shore $1.85
Lara $1.60 Grovedale $2.00
Leopold $1.05 St Albans $4.50

I think you'll find its only line betting eg.

St Albans -75pts v Leopold +75pts @ $1.85
Colac -7pts v South Barwon +7pts @$1.85.

I think you'll find the margin will be fairly conservative and there won't be great value.

...but don't read too much into that..they really love the club and that is the main reason they playing there.....even if Paul happened to speak to half a dozen clubs before the end of the season...his heart has always been at Joeys...its not the money.....no really...
