Unfortunately it was a king hit. Was at the game as a completely neutral spectator, just watching as have been involved in Ballarat lately and formerly in Gfl so thought it would be worth watching.
I cant really comment on whether David Johnson eye gouged early in the game as never saw anything and nothing was said until after the game. Perhaps he did though, it could be why no darley player went within 20m of him. He had 30 touched playing half fwd.
Game turned a bit spiteful in last qtr. Was a little skirmish early in qtr with 1 player from each team sent off. I was with 3 neutral people who all saw the hit. The ball was in the middle and there had been a bit of push and shove between Vincent and the Darley player(Deckert). Seemed to be over when Vincent turned his back and walked a couple steps away before he had his nose spread. Was a cheap shot. Was a massive brawl then. Just as it seemed to finish another darley player started throwing punches again. In fairness st marys threw a few too but definately was a cheap hit that started it. Gary Learmonth coaches Darley and is a decent bloke, and he was shattered after the game and apologised to St Marys coaches for his players and supporters behaviour.
I was told on Sunday 2 St Marys players were hospitalised, 1 with a detached retina from an eye gouge.
From an old school view though, was good to watch

I have heard Bell Park have cancelled their practice match this saturday with darley because of this....any truth to that?

Yes, Gary Learmonth is a good bloke and has been doing his best to clean up the clubs reputation since becoming coach. Some players never learn.

Actually...you just did..thank you
OK. Didn't want to get into a little spat, but...
So calling someone a 'gutless impugner'...is that the same sort of abuse?..or is that different?
Very different! And blindlingly obvious, really.
Because our little 'someone' is anonymous, he/she isn't identified. As a result, no-one is abused, only the concept of a 'gutless impugner'. There is no issue of libel, abuse or slander or anything of that nature, because he/she is unidentifiable. Exactly how they wanted it, I assume.
Just wondering, does your post seek to excuse them?

st.albans beat drysydale by 103 points on yesterday, drysydale being arguably the best team in bfl and st.albans being one of the lower teams in gfl, i dont see how a relegation system could possibly work, however it is a practice match and i know st.albans had a few players out but im not sure about drysdale

Just letting you no i got a few blokes i work with that play for Drysdale and they had a fair few out..they tell me they lost a praccy against a gdfl side aswell with plenty out. Theres no way that St Albans is 103 points better then Drysdale. If both teams were at full strength id still tip Drysdale but this would indicate at least some improvement for the supersaints.

that would have to be a joke

west could play with 24 players on a field and still be an average side. they are still 2-3 years away from troubling finals.

newtown defeated ammos in what was a close game til half time.
newtown forwardline created problems with the 3 pronged attack of spalding, bett and morrison.

Ridiculous statement really Soaring Eagle, people in glass houses shouldn't throw gigantic rocks.

I love the way that 'king hit' has now become the term for being beaten up. He called the guy on that hit him. If he turned his back, as you say, after it then he is either incredibly stupid or simply a coward. I would lean towards the latter as this seems to be mandatory at St Mary's.

Learn what exactly? That you shouldn't stick up for your team mates?

surely you're not going to argue the fact that west are a very average side?

he's probably more arguing that Newtown haven't exactly set the world on fire over the past few years. Something that most Eagles' supporters have trouble coming to terms with.
West won't be as bad as people think this year. Doug Scott has bought a lot of people in with him and some pretty good coaching techniques and ethos. I'm, not saying 'Look out GFL' like many clubs do but I think that GWSP will be a lot better than people will have already given them credit.

Does that mean if he turns his back at runs off that he deserves to be hit from behind? I think this is what you're saying?

Its true that Newtown havent set the world on fire over the past few years but they have still been better than West and should do better than them again this year, Newtown have definitely taken a step in the right direction this year with the return of old newtown boys and recruiting a good CHF.
When Doug was Newtown a few years back he did offer one thing and that was great insights into the game, as for his playing ability that left a lot to the imagination, but West will be looking for a lot from him, to stand up and lead the younger players through their first years in senior football but dont expect too much

Where are GWSP at? hav all the money chasers departed now? and are all the younger kids from a few years ago still there or hav the cleared off too?

I don't think anyone is arguing here that Newtown hasn't been better than West over the past five or so years. Prob only played in maybe one extra finals campaign though. Doug has fitted in very well and the challenge is in front of him. Let's see how he goes. He has a lot of support. I see Rick Wilde is back at Newtown...

I haven't really been in the loop this pre-season but I did have to drop in down there a couple of weeks ago for a meeting and they had 50 blokes on the track. Probably 20 new faces. No one is going to make any bold predictions but if they can improve on last year and be competitive against the top sides, that will be an improvement. I'm not sure how to address your question about money chasers, nor do I know who you are referring to? You wouldn't exactly call blokes money chasers when they are playing for your club would you? Most of the better known players we have recruited have played 2 or 3 years each which would probably be the going rate at a GFL club I would suggest. All the good younger kids that came through our own system are all still there and have had great pre-seasons.

He does have a challenge ahead but all the best to him.
Yeah Rick is back at Newtown but under what circumstances i'm unsure, he ran around in the 2's on the weekend and played maybe 7 minutes a qtr. He will be a handy pickup for the 2's if he plays and stays there but will provide a lot of knowledge and encouragement for their current ruckmen.

that would have to be a joke

Why would that have to be a joke? You honestly believe that St Albans is that much better then a full strength BFL premier??
Im not saying that Drysdale would challenge the top teams in the GFL. I dont think they would but of course they would challenge the bottome 3 or 4 and i would tip them to beat St Albans, just my opinion. Just because St Albans are in the top level in Geelong atm dont automatically mean they are better then the reigning BFL premiers..how many games has St Albans won in the last 5 years?

Sorry to disappoint you there young feller, but that is about the gap between the top BFL clubs and a lower GFL clubs give or take a few goals.

A good example will be with your recruit Panther, he'll be a gun player for you and probably kick between 50-70 goals. He was a more the handy two's player in a weak GFL club.

That is why promotion/relegation will never work, the gap is just too big to close over the space of one pre-season, all that will happen is the team that goes up will finish bottom by a mile and the team that goes down will dominate that division.

Surely not talking bout Panther thats played at Thomson and St Albans are you??

Your comment about promotion/relegation is pretty short sighted. Your assuming if a side gets relegated that they'd keep the same playing list and dominate?? Its rubbish, there'd be a big turnover of players by way of blokes not wanting to play a lower grade or going elsewhere for more money etc... And North Shore is a prime example.. there current side wouldn't even be a top 5 BFL side so there's no way they'd come straight back up if they were relegated.

Ill ask you what ive been asking for ages but no one can seem to give me an answer... Why does promotion/relegation work so well in every league across Melbourne but it wouldn't work in Geelong???

Your not disappointing me at all mate seens i have never had anything to do with BFL football in my life other then going to watch every now and then and watching the finals. If you read what i said..yes its my opinion that Drysdale would beat St Albans at full strength but i understand GFL people will have to big of an ego to even consider such a thing. My point was that there is no way at full strength St Albans would beat Drysdale by 103 points and by not even wanting to admit it would be a close match tells me that you are either a follower or player of a team from the lower end of the GFL ladder or you are quite ignorant.
Ive got no problems with being proved wrong and accepting other peoples opinions but to me i wouldve thought it was obvious that matchups between the GFL's bottom 2 or 3 against the BFL's top 2 or 3 (Ammos, Drys, Torquay) would be close and yes in some cases the BFL teams would win.

Junior,my little boy, I wasn't going to embarrass you with an educated response, but i was thinking about it last night and decided that I had to set things right.
It would be a different result if drysdale had a full list and St Albans had their five AFL/VFL/SANFL players, their team of the decade player, and two of the top five B&F fromlast year in their side as well.
You are dead right that the margin would have been nowhere near the 103 point drubbing.
It would have been closer to 203 points.
Dont comment on what you don't know son.
Go back to the u/16 thread with your insightful knowledge, comment and wit.

Lara had a practice match last Sunday against Lalor
Does anybody now how they went and how the new guys did?

Lara won comfortably. Lalor were missing half a dozen senior players due to cricket. We had a few out as well. A number of recruits showed good signs. Lara v East Point at Lara on Saturday 27th.
