Geelong - Too old, too slow?

I'm definitely not a Cats lover, and it seems we've built up a pretty decent rivalry lately given Geelong obliterated us about 117 times in a row before we finally burst their bubble in the 2017 finals and have seemingly had the wood over them in big games ever since. However I actually really admire their policy of perennially remaining relevant, and despite of the Tigers-Cats grudge, there's a fair chunk of me that wouldn't be overly shattered - if my own team weren't win the flag of course - if Geelong were to defy the critics of their "stay relevant" policy and win the flag. I have minimal respect for those who want their own club to bottom out solely to access the premium young talent in order to achieve ultimate success.

I've never understood why simply keeping your picks automatically means dropping instantly to the bottom of the ladder anyway. Every side is rebuilding every year to some degree.

GMHBA gets you top 4, then you get found out in finals because you’re not an actual top 4 quality side. You keep stuffing up everybody else’s premiership runs. Dogs could’ve won if they made top 4 instead of you. Better side than you during H&A.

Highlighted by our 5-3 record away from GMHBA this year

We just beat the Dogs at Marvel, literally last night. If they wanted top 4 so badly maybe they should've won the game? Although I'm interested to hear how Kardinia Park has any relevance on last night's match, please humour me.

I would love for a team, whether it be the Cats or someone else, show that there's a way to win a flag by maintaining a philosophy of not bottoming out. It'd be really healthy for the competition.

Read up.
PJays was claiming Geelong and interstate teams have an advantage
Which is clearly not true.

We are also talking about two different things .

One is ground advantage and one is overall structural advantage.

Melbourne based teams have a great overall structural advantage because Melbourne produces the majority of players and the majority of players want to live in nice suburbs in Melbourne.
This helps the Dees and Tiges etx a smidgen.
Fair enough I didn't completely read every post so my bad.
Agree somewhat in what you say in regards to high priced suburbs in inner Melbourne however not sure Richmond or Melbourne FC's were "destination clubs" prior to 2017... I think you're getting it a bit mixed up with success in which Geelong for an example has had for the last 15 years hence why Geelong have had great success in getting big name recruits back home.
In regards to Richmond seeming you have mentioned them. Name one big recruit besides Tom Lynch that has chosen Richmond in the last 20 years????
I certainly can name a hell of a lot that have left for more success.

I would like you to expand on this, please.

Could’ve not would’ve. They probably would’ve had more gas in the tank and might not have capitulated so badly. The were leading for most of the game, playing an extra final cooked them.

Dogs are not a finals quality side this year, it would’ve been embarrassing if you lost to them. Even we beat them.

They are better than last year with a much fitter Cameron, Stengle as well as SDK/Stewart intercepting a lot more. Hopefully teams figure out to make Stewart defend/tag him and not let him guard grass.

They've beaten 1 top 8 team so far (Brisbane in their hole), so are probably behind about 4-5 other teams, midfield is very average.

Why won't this club stop competiting & go down the bottom of the ladder for a while...

They are making up the numbers again, I think the Melbourne are a lot better & Lions are a decent amount better.
To be fair its Demons by how far again and the most of the league is around the same mark.

Sigh…really thought they would start to decline this season…they’ve got better and done it without Dangerfield and few other key players like Jack Henry. Chris Scott has coached incredibly well.

Cameron has been elite. In career best form. Hawkins continues to get better with age.

Atkins has moved into the midfield and become an excellent player.

Stewart and de koning have become a top 2 defensive duo in the league behind lever and may.

They’ve found some excellent kids in Holmes, Stephen’s and de koning.

Stengle has been a top 3 recruit.

Dangerfield. Henry. Menegola and Holmes all to come back in the next few weeks.

Their run home has some tough games but they play the demons, saints and dogs at gmhba…With a the eagles twice and north to come, they are a lock to finish top 4 and potentially top 2.

Maybe in 2025 we will finally start to see the cliff we’ve all been hearing about…

Do you think you are a top 4 quality team? I don’t.

If we are in the top four, yes. If we are not, no.

Stop hiding behind this stupid home ground bullshit argument and argue numbers.

We are 5-3 away from our home ground.

That ratio means roughly a 14-8 record if stretched to a 22 round season.

So statistically if we ONLY played away from home, we would comfortably make the finals probably somewhere around 5th or 6th.

No team ONLY plays away. Every team has home games. So we are no different to any other team on that score. We also get less home games than other teams.

The argument that we are where we are because of home games ignores the records and realities of every other club in the competition, and it ignores cold hard facts

Reakon Cats will be top 4

With the draw we have thats likely.
% will be crucial and with wce twice and north plus other games in geelong i would expect we get enough % to edge out st kilda/carlton/syd for 4th but its a logjam.

That said we have an outstanding record of finishing top 4 but if we get bundled out in another prelim it doesnt mean much.
