Geelong - Too old, too slow?

Sigh…really thought they would start to decline this season…they’ve got better and done it without Dangerfield and few other key players like Jack Henry. Chris Scott has coached incredibly well.

Cameron has been elite. In career best form. Hawkins continues to get better with age.

Atkins has moved into the midfield and become an excellent player.

Stewart and de koning have become a top 2 defensive duo in the league behind lever and may.

They’ve found some excellent kids in Holmes, Stephen’s and de koning.

Stengle has been a top 3 recruit.

Dangerfield. Henry. Menegola and Holmes all to come back in the next few weeks.

Their run home has some tough games but they play the demons, saints and dogs at gmhba…With a the eagles twice and north to come, they are a lock to finish top 4 and potentially top 2.

Maybe in 2025 we will finally start to see the cliff we’ve all been hearing about…

The cliff was never going to happen until all the oldies start falling off.

It’ll come.

My god the cats just don’t go away do they? They like hogging the top 4 spot only to then waste it in finals. It’s not even top 4 anymore just top 3 cause of them.
Do you think you are a top 4 quality team? I don’t.
Since round 17 last season Geelong is 4-3 at KP and 10-5 outside of KP. The idea that playing at KP gives us an automatic finals berth or top 4 is not an intelligent one.

Cause there is f all seating capacity like GMHBA so have no right to make teams play against us there on a ground they don’t know.
Their is F all seating at most grounds not called the MCG, should we stop allowing teams to play at their home ground so more away fans can attend or something?

Geelong have done very good regenrating the list while competing I'll give them that, Stengle cost nothing but could have easily backfired and just been a waste of a list spot just shows the difference in culture between Geelong & the Crows.

When Selwood, Hawkins & Dangerfield retire than the Cliff might come a lot of leadership, but knowing just Geelong they will just go out & replace them in a off-season trade/free agency period.

This is a good point…

Dangerfield has been injured most of this season and when he’s played, been average. They will replace him easily with a free agent wanting to come home.

Selwood has been serviceable but not crucial..his leadership will be missed but as a player he’s easily replaceable.

Hawkins still has 2-3 solid years left..

can’t see them having a hawthorn type fall like we’ve had the past 5 years. By the time we play finals again, it will be close to or over a decade in between finals appearances. That won’t happen to the cats.

Those other grounds are not in Victoria so it’s ok, you guys are a vic team that seems to be the black sheep of the group because you act like interstate teams regarding home grounds.

Also having a 92% or something win rate is absurd, it’s the most in the games history, if you think this doesn’t give you 2-3 extra wins in H&A you have no idea. 2 or 3 wins less you’d be considered a 5th-8th best team in H&A which seems pretty accurate.

I think the club isn’t going to go to the off season FA as we are starting to look more towards the future, we are playing more kids this year more then I can remember.

Our ground will have 40k seats next year. Doubt Richmond v Geelong this year goes above that. Time to bring that home game home.

Hawthorn haven't fallen that hard. Win 5-10 games a year and be competitive when you rebuild is fine. We will need to do the same thing for a couple of years to take a few top 10 talents in the draft at some point.

I think we have started to put the blocks in place though so we don't end up over a cliff North Melbourne style.

SDK and Henry is a good starting point for a long term backline. Stewart has just turned 29 so ok for the medium term. Got plenty of mid 20s foot soldiers back there so really only need to find a class ball user to replace Tuohy in the short term.

Cameron has also just turned 29 so ok for the medium term. We've got a few small forwards now. Ratugolea will have to be the stop gap between Hawkins and finding another key forward via the draft. That is where we will need a down year at the right time to find a top 10 draft talent.

For the first time in 10 years we have invested in young ruckman. We've used a second round pick the last two years on a ruck plus taken an ex basketballer via Cat B so wheels in motion for that, it will just take time. At the end of the day only replacing Stanley/Ceglar there anyway so you'd hope one of those young guys ends up AFL quality.

The midfield is going to be an issue. Hopefully staying competitive for the time being we can use the cash we are going to have freed up from retirements to get an elite mid or two via free agency or trade. Then we will need a couple more in via the top 10 of the draft to supplement the younger guys we have drafted the last few years.

And if you think we wouldn’t have that win rate if we were based in Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide or Perth, you equally have no idea

What? Do you want me to speculate about what type of ground you’d have or something if you were an interstate team. How am I meant to answer that.

You don’t need to answer it because it’s bullshit.

We play away from our current ground better than any other team over the past decade.

Whatever shaped HOME ground we had, we’d dominate there too.

Stop arguing against facts for one ****en second

Just so we are clear, when and if Sydney make the top 4 this season, in which they currently have a 2-2 record away from home (3-2 counting the Olympic stadium against the Giants which is a neutral venue anyway and one which historically Sydney has played at semi regularly), are they going to get their colours lowered because ‘they only made top 4 due to their home games’ or will they be treated like every other top non-juggernaut team who wins most of their home games and goes 50-50 or slightly better away?

Read up.
PJays was claiming Geelong and interstate teams have an advantage
Which is clearly not true

They absolutely do have an advantage in the Home and Away season

Take one current example. Bulldogs on Friday

Got beaten. Well played Geelong.

Later in the season, the Dogs travel to Geelong and play the Cats again

The Cats clearly have a big advantage hosting the Dogs in Geelong, and the Dogs do not have a comparable advantage hosting Geelong at Marvel.

Therefore in this matchup, Geelong has a Home and Away advantage.

Do we?

We’ve played at Docklands 3 times in the last season and a half.
The bulldogs once they’ve been to the Cattery, will have played their twice in the same period.

Doesn’t that just mean in all cases the visiting team is playing on a ground they rarely play at?

Ok you know what, that’s fine. I guess this means no more whinging about getting finals there right? It makes no difference.

Sorry what? So because we have jumped every hurdle put in front of us, won more away games than any other side, our reward should then be ‘shut up about home finals’ that every other team is allowed to have but we aren’t?

You’ve tried this moronic argument of how we make the top 4 because of our home ground - ignoring that every other team has, and plays better at, their own home ground, you’ve ignored that we win more away from home than anyone else, and to top it off you’re now moronic enough to interpret that it means we should host no finals as it ‘makes no difference’?

The West Coast side of 2006, they won everywhere. On that basis should they have been denied a home QF and PF?

You played at Docklands a couple of weeks ago!

Regardless, that's just one factor

Another is crowd.

At Geelong, a small intimate arena where 80% of the crowd will be barracking for the Cats

Compare to Marvel. A soulless stadium dreamt up in a corporate boardroom, 52,000 seats, with maybe 60% supporting the Dogs because, Melbourne being the big city, inevitably the Cats have decent numbers supporting them.

Opposition teams don't get big numbers to Geelong. Not many opposition fans live near Geelong, cos, well barely anyone at all lives near Geelong. It's a long drive. Compared to an easy train ride to Marvel

So it’s the crowd now not the ground?

We've had a home ground in Geelong since inception.
Not our fault you all surrendered yours.
