There's no doubting Geelong are THE dominant team in the competition, nobody can debate that after they smashed Port by a record margin in last years GF, but everyones now pumping up Hawthorn as their biggest challengers for 2008!

I thought id start this thread after reading and having a laugh at the "Hawthorns Depth" thread which quickly turned into a Geelong Vs Hawthorn argument.... so people, which team has the greater depth, and which team will have bragging rights in 2008/2009/2010???

I apologise if you dont approve of this post, I just thought id get the "sorry" out of the way now since im bound to cop loads of abuse for this, just like every other poster does for any post :D

by "everyones" you mean the Hawthorn supporters

Don't kid yourself pussycat.
I remember late last year, droves of Geelong supporters shi!!ing themselves at the thought of playing Hawthorn in the GF and ruining their superb year.
If any team can beat Geelong it's Hawthorn, you know it, i know it, everyone knows it.

Yeah we were sh!ting ourselves. Lucky you got beaten by a team that we beat by over 100 points the week before. Dodged that bullet!

Hopefully we will put you in your place but it would not surprise me if Hawthorn got off to a flyer and won their first 6 or so games. But you have to hang with us for the whole season then we'll talk....

Isn't hindsight a funny thing.;)

Doesn't change the fact that the week before those feeling were rampant throughout cat supporters.

According to who? You? A silly Hawthorn supporter? Who gives a stuff?

Geelong has the better team and has more depth than us.

That wont change until we beat them in a final and prove ourselves.

You should take lectures for the dozens of silly Hawk fans on Bigfooty. They could do with the perspective you have shown. As for this clash it's before round 2 ffs. Start this crap in Bay 13 it is not worth a topic here at this stage.

Will most likely beat them, but that will be hardly worth it or worrying to them when they probably win their second premiership.

right on the money my friend, i couldnt care less if we drop a game to hawthorn and go on to do a repeat.....wish you could enlighten your mates over at the hawthorn board...

I actually believe the Hawks have the best depth, not saying the Cats depth is bad, just that the Hawks depth goes a little deeper and better.

But i reckon the cats still have the best 22 quite easily.

I think you might be right. The Cats have the most depth in their first 22 (Players 11-22 are all very good)
But I'm not sure if they have much in reserve. If they get injuries, they will come back to the pack
Who else is there? Varcoe? Prismall? Tenace? (he's a bit dodgy)

I reckon Hawthorn and Collingwood might have more depth from Players 23-30
But this could also be because I'm more familiar with the fringe players from those teams.
Geelong have had a very settled line-up for a while now. They could have some really good players we don't know about.

Due to our fairly massive clean out last year in which we got rid of/traded:

Charlie Gardiner
Steven King
Henry Playfair
Tim Callan
Matthew Spencer
Todd Grima
Stephen Owens
Sam Hunt
Joel Reynolds (never played but still would have been a depth player)

There may be even more. We were keen to take Scott Thompson in the draft (best defender in our seconds side, who you have him in SC!) but the Roos got him. People here may or may not be familiar with some of those names (Spencer down) but they were the best players of our VFL side and would have come in for Milburn, Scarlett, etc if need be.

Our depth outside the best say 25 has definitely been effected and we could not possibly be the best or near the best in this area any more but it was unavoidable. If the Hawks had a great run with injuries and stormed to the flag I'm sure they would probably lose a large slab of their best reserves players also.

In terms of good players you may no know about there are probably less than you would think and a couple played against the Power.

Gamble
Prismall
Davenport
West
Varcoe
Djerrka (sp?)
Bedford
Taylor

Not going to blow people away but in fairness to Geelong it is a list that is young and we would hope has not peaked rather than a list of 24yo+ that we are pretty sure we have seen the best of. It will be challenging but I am still happy that in the off season that Geelong continued to look for young players that will hopefully extend our stay near the top rather than go for top ups (Mark Johnson) which could limit our window.

We are their bogey team. We have smashed them several times the last half decade

7 - 5 to the Hawks this decade. I'm not happy about it but it's not a bogey. Late 80s to early 90s when it was 12-1 or so Hawthorn's way was a bogey. As for 2006 yes well done you belted us twice. We were also smashed far worse by Collingwood and Adelaide. Hear their fans going on about it? Maybe because they know what's actually important.

I hate these threads. :(

No one has the definitive answer, so no one can be right or wrong.

I would prefer only non-supporters of the clubs being compared are allowed to post otherwise you cant get an accurate reflection of what the broader footy community think.

Ir was geelong that won the vfl premiership last year, not hawthorn or collingwood

The Cats by a long shot.

Let them have it, and the bragging rights until the day we finally topple them.

It's been one game into the new season, which means just TWO games ago Geelong were giving the second best side in the land an absolute hiding. Unless I'm mistaken, their side hasn't changed since last season.
