I was going to wait till the new year before firing another shot at the afl but here we go again. Banning the third man up in ruck play
is surely one of the more stupid decisions they have made. Why should the rucks be protected ?, if they took a run and jump at the ball
instead of wrestling and holding each other, there would be no third man up. As it is they are sitting ducks under the ball and it makes
plenty of sense for a third man to contest to a team's advantage. How about when the ball is kicked to chf, only the chf and chb are allowed
to compete for the mark or only the fullback can kick out after a behind -this is similar and how stupid does it sound?
So next year we play 4 ruck men - McEvoy, Fitzy, Roughie and Hodgey or will there be a new rule stating only 2 ruck men can play?
We should have expected it, an afl decision against a successful Hawthorn initiative.

Exactly, the third man up clears congestion.

Prevents the disciples of Paul Roos from having 12 midfielders dive into every contest.

I see now why we traded Lewis for peanuts :p

I'm torn on what to think about the third man up.

On one side, I can see that the third man up essentially nullifies the traditional role of role of the ruck except for centre bounces. On the other side I see that it also frees up play and reduces the effectiveness of congestion tactics.

I think I tend to be persuaded by the line of reasoning that it is congestion which is causing the ruck challenge, not the third man up. So I think we'll find flooding the ball up/in will return big time. But then the decrease in both stoppages through fewer high tackle rewards and more liberal deliberate out of bounds calls may balance that out. Fewer opportunities to flood a stoppage.

I guess what the committee is trying to achieve is a free-flowing game which preserves the utility of one of the more unique rolls in an Aussie Rules side. And they are trying to do that in the least intrusive way possible. I guess it's worth a shot but I bet the combination of rules don't work that well in eliminating congestion so I think we'll see the return of the third man up in two or three years.

The AFLs explanation for the 3rd man rule baffles me.

They say the 3rd man up doesn't influence the clearances based on stats. Then why the need to ban it?

Is it just coincidence that the last 4 premierships were won by teams employing this tactic and don't have an elite ruckman?

On a positive note, there is another rule change that stops Duckwood getting frees.
I'll believe it when I see it. I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if Selwood continues to get away with it somehow.

Because the inept afl need to protect the ruckmen who tap it mostly down to their feet causing more congestion due to typical afl coach's negative tactics. What is more of a joke is the afl consulting coaches about rule changes, that is the same people trying to break them - work that out.

As good as that is, I'll be more glad to see the end of the bullshit frees Toby McLean gets. That guy's a bigger cheat than Selwood!
