boy oh boy wowee
The mental gymnastics they have to spin for these late game **** ups are out of control.

Just admit you got it wrong and move on. It's clearly a 50m, or they should be explaining why all these other 50s have been paid for the same type of infringement..

I think they're making a huge mistake by fueling attention on umpiring.
They're trying to present it as accountability - but it's actually fueling umpire obsession and hate.

AFL media loves it. Everyone gets emotional about umpiring decisions. Compare the number of comments on an instagram post for an amazing speccy versus a controversial umpiring decision. So AFL, Fox, Seven - they all love to discuss the umpiring.

The AFL is either stupid by trying to reclaim credibility through transparency and cocking it up (score reviews, public review of decisions etc) or they are deliberately fueling the clicks and viewership that comes with highlighting umpire contentiousness.

AFL fans say they just want consistency. But listen to these common critiques of umpiring:
  • You shouldn't pay a free kick like that IN FRONT OF GOAL! (so we want free kicks paid differently depending on where on the field it happens)
  • Paying a soft free late in a close game! You can't do that! Put the whistle away! That ump has no feel for the game. (so we want free kicks paid differently depending on what stage of the game it is.
  • He always plays for free kicks - they shouldn't pay that (so we want free kicks given differently depending on who has been infringed)
  • It's a wet weather game - pay the mark! (so we want free kicks paid differently depending on weather)

So there are multiple calls for it to be consistently inconsistent. These four examples I've given produce a combination of 16 different perspectives that aren't perfectly aligned. Add to that those that want incorrect decisions paid both ways. Add to that that each group of 4 umpires will also have different interpretations, and that official rules and interpretations are updated each year and all of a sudden you've got literally infinite perspectives on how the rules should be applied for any specific game.

The long and short of it is that the AFL should tell everyone to shut the **** up and accept the umpires decision because sometimes it goes your way and sometimes it doesn't.

I tend to agree. Not sure what's to be gained by the whole thing. It doesn't change the result and regardless of whether the call was right or wrong it doesn't change how clubs and supporters feel about it.

Just have the clubs seek clarity on individual calls privately and if a pattern emerges that suggests there's a fundamental misunderstanding of how the rule is being umpired then consider offering a public explanation.

Yeah I agree. They are much better off saying nothing. But by trying to be open and transparent yet twisting it all to protect the umpires makes it far worse.

The AFL has an amazing skill at making a decision that instead of improving a situation, makes every stakeholder less satisfied.

There's no way the umpires are enjoying how they are handling things. Every second poster is saying the umpiring is the worst its ever been. Imagine having someone say that about your job every day. (Well I kinda do - it sucks)

She has become the lord of the spin. Full of shit.
Giving crap excuses seems to be the MO now and thinking pepole are going to be fooled into believing the crap. They dont. so stop it.

Nah. He was playing on. Would've been. Loud as hell so he wouldn't have heard the whistle for the mark, neither would the pies players

He then proceeded to play on before any ump could pay 50 (you no longer have to take the full 50 if it is paid - play on is effectively advantage)
he took the mark, saw the collingwood players, put his hand up to appeal for the 50 the pies players went bak to the mark, then he plays on

He continues on 4 steps in a straight line after taking the mark. Both pies players were already well over the mark when the whistle went and made no effort to get back. Should be 50.

Scott moved quite substantially off his line
Irrelevant. It's play on when the umpire says it's play on not when the players decide for themselves it's play on.

I still have love for Clarko and would love it if he did turn North Melbourne around.

and then finals get officiated differently on top of all that.

Look where he takes the mark, then look where he is corralled... it's a good 5m off the line and 10m back
Agree 10 m back, part of which is the response to the 2 pies players charging him.

He saw them charging from behind him?

The hate for the pies is blinding people

The Shinbeggars sympathy here is odd. They got exactly what they deserved. The more they beg the more they should get crushed.
