Tom Murphy - gave it everything but let's be honest here.
Never before has a whipping boy been whipped so consistently and relentlessly across his entire career.
I'm a very positive fan in general but Tom Murphy was the one that set me off. I'll never question his effort, or team ethic but this guy did my head in for a good 5 years there.

Ahahaha, he played 95 games but I swear it felt like 150 😂

Looking back maybe we were a bit harsh, he was 189cm being asked to play on #1 forwards when we were smashed by injury. How on earth Campbell Brown used to do the same at 177cm I’ll never know.

Once they started clamping down of smashing of the arms in marking contests, it was the start of Mad Dog’s downward trend in form and survival in the AFL

Tom Murphy wasn't all that good IN the aerial contest, but he was damn good at impeding his opponent getting there. He was most comfortable as the third tall - his opponent would never get to jump across the front of the pack - but as a primary KPD he struggled to deal when the indiscriminate ball was bombed on his head. That's where the frustration came from - he was "guaranteed" to lose the 50/50 marking contest.

Murphy was the inverse of Brown (or for modern day - Sicily) - Brown was and Sicily is great in the stationary contest as their one-on-one body-work is so good. Sicily an exceptional reader of the play....but generally doesn't do much to stop his direct opponent getting TO the contest - he just backs himself to do it better. Brown would use the rules of the day (mainly no chopping arms and allowed full body spoils) and just cannon into his opponent, using his body as a weapon and taking them both to ground. Brown and Sicily played as genuine KPD players in undersized bodies. Murphy was a tall tagger who was the 'closest' we had when a KPD was needed.

Clinton Young feebly going to ground in the goal square to cost us a crucial goal was close to the most putrid thing ive seen in a Grand Final. Poor in any game, let alone the last qtr of a close game, let alone in the last qtr of a close grand final!

Seemingly a ripper bloke and clubman, played a superb first half in 08 before getting injured and is a deserved premiership player.... but I reckon that effort was the end of him as a hawks player.

Didn't help that he was shoved in the back by Kieran Jack

LDU has put off contract talks until the end of the year. StKilda is a possible destination if he leaves as he is from the Mornington peninsula. Dingley is closer, might be worth a visit from Sam and Lyndall.

Tadhg Kennelly was holding onto Ashley Sampi in the pack when Leo Barry took that mark at the end of the 2005 GF. (Sh)it happens sometimes. Just that it’s twice favoured Sydney/South Melbourne in the only two GFs they’ve won since 1933.
