I’m not super impressed with Kate’s latest effort to undermine the members or tell me I need to go to games and cheer our forward congestion, poor delivery, horrible conversion and generally depressing, unwatchable football.

For this I totally do not intend to go to games at all. Why would I? It’s depressing and then you just get abuse from the President.

Anyway there are some good points made here. If you haven’t thought of it yet, you might like to avail yourself of this generous and gracious offer. I plan to.

As a club we value transparency and strive to give our members the option to contact key decision makers at the club.
Members and Club supporters are welcome to contact our CEO and Club President via email.

Oh she's ****ing getting one

If Sydney didn't have to pay out McCartin inside their cap there's no way we'll have to pay Gus inside ours.
Where do you read that?
Big difference between the 1 year of McCartin and the 5 years of Brayshaw. It was bloody stupid contract considering his previous history and we shouldn't just get off

Haven't renewed my membership yet this year and not sure I will. I've been happy to pay for memberships when we were a bottom side even though I can rarely attend games. But this current regime which was happy to claim full credit for a premiership won by the playing group but dodges responsibility and pass the buck for all the off-field failings and the bad contract decisions is a joke.
This latest bullshit about making noise is just absolute nuffy rubbish. Imagine going out in straight sets two consecutive years and the Presidents response is "everyone needs to cheer louder".

They mentioned it on Footy Classified I think.

Concussion is different from other injuries and circumstances. He's basically been forced to retire we don't really get a say in that. Different from if he'd done his knee or something because we'd still keep him on the books for a while and tried to get him right.

It's gonna set a pretty big precedent if it's kept inside our cap. The vibe I'm getting is that most clubs want concussion retirements to be moved outside it.

I'm getting the Kayo Melbourne membership just cause its cheaper than paying for Kayo outright. I can make noise from home :)

I think the fact she came along once the hard part was done and is now acting like we should be grateful for what we have like its on the back of her and Pert is vomit inducing. We have laid 4 eggs in finals on our home ground playing ugly footy after our captain proclaimed "we're going to do it again in front of the fans" 2 years ago. Sorry for holding the club to expectations set publicly by the captain. Sorry for thinking AFL should be entertaining. Sorry for not cheering on professional men no matter what like they are special needs kids having a crack.

I still think some of it should be inside our cap. He had multiple issues with concussion and had already considered retirement early. Signing him for 6 years or whatever was always gonna back fire, everyone with concussion issues of that nature retires from concussion, I don't see why we should get a free swing at it while Docherty missed 3 years with ACLs and Cancer and Carlton have to foot that inside the cap.
Gus can work at the club for 500k a year

Docherty came back and played though didn't he. Gus will absolutely never play again so it's a totally different situation. Giving him a coaching role or something on his current contract would be even more fraught with how restricted the soft cap is. Also if a player had a separate health condition that meant they had to retire such as a heart issue, I would absolutely expect that their salary be moved out of the cap as well.

I don't think you can use Gus' history as a reason either. Like say a player had no concussion history but got a really bad one at the start of a big contract and were forced to retire. Would their cap be forgiven because that history wasn't there? Or what if Simpkin is forced to retired after having three concussions in the space of a year?

Gus hadn't had a concussion in about 6 years. His issues looked to be behind him. I also think that if you create a tiered system where players who have any concussions get offered shit contracts for fear that they might retire early that might end up in a discrimination lawsuit.

I think the AFL probably need to get together with the AFLPA to work out how to handle this moving forward with possible hard limits on contract terms across the board.

Most of what you said I'd agree with, but I knew it was a risk and so did others here when the contract was announced. If you sign a contract of that length some of it should be included in the cap. What number that is can be debated then but we shouldnt walk away like nothing happened. Our 6 years could have been what stopped him going to Freo.

I completely understand the argument that we knew full well Brayshaw was an early retirement risk, but:

The AFL can't possibly set the precedent that clubs have to include payments for players retired due to concussion in the salary cap. They are in all sorts of strife legally already and they can't afford a future situation where a player is pressured or encouraged to continue playing despite concussion concerns. I'm 99% sure they will allow us to pay it outside a cap and in the near future the AFL itself will have to set up an extremely large fund to pay for such circumstances and ongoing healthcare for players in this scenario.

Why should the AFL have to pay 3 million dollars because we were stupid enough to give him 6 years? We absolutely need to cover something and some of that should be inside the salary cap even if it's 10%

Okay so I sent the club my email. I went with polite but disappointed in the forlorn hope it is actually read and considered, but I seriously doubt it. It goes like this:

Dear Kate

Thank you for providing members with the opportunity to contact you directly.

I am a lifelong supporter of the Demons and have been a member for nearly 20 years. I have loved the club for a long time and been the sponsor (in turn) of Ben Kennedy, Jake Lever, Nathan Jones and James Harmes. I have donated freely to rid the club of debt during 2007 and 2008. This is a lot of money for me. I’m not wealthy. I’m an ordinary worker. I can’t afford a house, a Range Rover or a trip to Mt Buller. And I’m not alone.

Given all this, I wanted to give you some honest, candid feedback about the way I feel I am being treated by the club President.

Recently, and not for the first time, you have gone public to tell members to attend games and ‘cheer louder’. And just this week you have compared, unfavourably, members and supporters of Melbourne to the members and supporters of Collingwood in attendance. And have further accused us of not being sufficiently noisy during games. They are a much bigger club, with more than 35 thousand more supporters than Melbourne. Our overall attendance is excellent in terms of the number of members. And all of them are paying a fair bit of money to the club.

I don’t know whether you watched Collingwood play last year. It was genuinely exciting, attacking, fast-flowing football and, if I were a Collingwood fan, I have no doubt I would have cheered louder than anyone. The reason I find it difficult to engage with Melbourne games these days is because we have spent the last two years playing a depressing and frustrating style of football. I do know that we have made top four in the home and away season two years running, but this isn’t why I watch football. It is supposed to be entertaining and I’m not entertained. I don’t really want to cheer watching the midfield kick the ball into orbit to arrive in a horribly congested forward line with nobody leading, and then repeatedly fail to convert. I’m not blaming the players – all teams struggle with form from time to time. But I was incredibly disappointed that you claim that noisy crowds make a difference to the players. It seems that you are blaming us for the team’s failure to win a final in two years. Because we aren’t loud enough.

This isn’t about wins and losses. I would rather watch entertaining football and genuine growth in the way we play, even if we lose. And I don’t want to be told to cheer when I’m not seeing anything I enjoy.

I did enjoy the 2021 Grand Final and imagine that there was a fair bit of noise from the crowd. You would know better than me. You got to go. I, like many supporters, had to watch alone in my house on the couch with the cat. And now you want to tell me that I don’t attend enough games or cheer enough. I watched our opening game for the season. I gave it my best but kicking 2.8 in a half of football didn’t inspire me to ‘make a noise’. I don’t know if you notice the failings of our coach and players – you certainly seem to notice mine. You ask me to spend more and more money and then repeatedly tell me I’m not doing enough.

If there was a time for you to make a noise, it was when the club was facing a barrage of criticism for its ‘culture’ over the off-season. I saw Max Gawn facing the media on numerous occasions. I didn’t see you.

I am a paid-up member, but I don’t know how much longer I will be when the key decision makers of the club are so tone-deaf to the feelings of their members. And I have no confidence that you or anyone else will pay any attention to this feedback, but I wanted you to understand that I am hurt and disappointed by your comments.

Other than this, I do hope that your presidency of the club is a success and that I can learn to enjoy the Demons again.

Yours sincerely
