Has anyone made a thread on this yet?

If they haven't, I'm very surprised.

Umm yeah... apparently GF eve is the newest holiday in the Vic calendar.

If you ask me I think it is an absolute load of bull. How many more pointless holidays do we need to spend time with family and friends?

We already have Labour Day, Melbourne Cup Day and Queens Birthday.

Now Victoria is closing shops so everyone can see 2 Western Australian teams in a 1 hour parade?

At least substitute one of one of those other pointless holidays for this new holiday.

Considering Daniel Andrews is the poster boy for big footy, you could be looking at ban - or at least an infraction.

Its going ruin the atmosphere of the parade. **** you Andrews
Yeah the majority who go to that are already in the cbd working. No work means they wont travel to cbd just for the parade. Oh well it's boring anyway.

If a small business can't handle being closed for one day, then they aren't very good at what they do

No they have to pay penalty rates to staff on that day if they choose to open.
Don't open if it isn't profitable on the day? Free market yo!
If it was really a free market there wouldn't be a minimum wage or any penalty rates.

It's just populist politics at its finest (or worst)

They don't have to open. If they don't, more business for those that do and they'll make money via greater market share. It's a perfect system.

But not every business can just make money on the day. It can work for those that can sell products readily available to the public (such as hospitality).

But what about small scale businesses that require long term work in order to make bulk profits (such as an office, consultancies and IT desk)?

I'm certainly no lead economist, but surely an extra public holiday can perturb those general networks of businesses.

You're right, you're not a lead economist. If they require long term work in order to profit, what is another day?

Why - its on a Saturday?

Plenty of people have to work on GF day, though. Retail, customer service, hospitality, etc. Making it a public holiday would (depending on the industry) afford them with the day off, or make it more worth their while financially (than standard Saturday pay rates).
