Here's 2024 Provisional AFL Draft Order

Cheers to Lore for their hard work in setting this up, and making it available for all users on BF to use and keep track of the picks ahead of the upcoming draft - and please practice patience grasshoppers if it's not updated in the immediate aftermath of completed trade

I'll also sticky this post to ensure it's easily accessible for discussion of our hypothetical trader

Also,

2024 Free Agency Period

The AFL introduced free agency at the end of the 2012 season, giving players another vehicle where they can transfer from one club to another. Free agency is a common form of player movement in major football and sporting codes around the world.

Free Agency Opens: Friday October 4 at 9.00am
Free Agency Closes: Friday October 11 at 5.00pm

Continental Tyres AFL Trade Period

Trade Period Opens: Monday October 7 at 9.00am
Trade Period Closes: Wednesday October 16 at 7.30pm

Feels like Melbourne have a bit of a double standard going on with valuing Oliver.

On one hand they are having behavioral issues with drugs and mental health that has lead to severe performance issues on and off field around the club and are overpaying him so want him gone

But when it comes to shopping him around, they are expecting other clubs to value and perceive him differently and rate him on the player he used to be, and not for the reasons they want to offload him.

It’s a bit of a double standard

Not salary cap, he thinks he's somehow busted the idea that Geelong -> Ford sponsorship is the longest, continual sponsorship in the sporting world
I mean he wouldn't be wrong, Slazenger & Wimbledon is longer - as is Philips and PSV (the club was literally set up for Philips employees).

PSV was never a paid sponsorship (early days) the owner just put his company signs up etc. Never paid a cent. No idea about slazenger and Wimbledon. Thats a new one for me.

Every bit of body language and tone there there speaks to the truth to me.
What we don't know is, however brief the meeting with Oliver was, is if money was discussed at all with Melbourne.
We have really been assuming an offer was made. Melbs could have just clamped down on Oliver without further discussion (in a paroxysm of fear. lol.) It's a bouncy bed!

He'll fall in the shitter in 2025, and be a salary dump next season.

Is there any chance that we can leave out trades that have zero relevance to Geelong?

Surely there's a level of relevance in the discussion or at the very least, the mentioning of completed trades or FA acquisitions - while trades may not directly involve Geelong, the movement of draft picks, players to other clubs etc, does have a flow on effect across the league

We've seen in the past that when team/s finally agree to one trade, it can then unlock the pieces needed to complete futures - ones that may then include Geelong

If we look at the Stringer / GWS connection as an example - in isolation it may seem a slightly funky trade and there's been a few questions around where that connection has come from. BUT when we expand outside of that direct link we see this:

- The Western Bulldogs are chasing Xavier O’Halloran from GWS, he's currently contracted to GWS but the Bulldogs have a 4yr deal in front of him. He's a midfield/forward option, played 17 games this past season (for a total of 67) and GWS like to use him as their starting sub - they are also reluctant to trade him while he's under contract for another 12 months

- This is where Stringer becomes involved, because he is a player that GWS have reportedly had discussions with but it's unsure if he wants to leave Vic or not. Now, if Stringer is happy to leave Vic and move to GWS, it's believed that will help move along any trade negotiations for O’Halloran as GWS will have a ready made midfield/forward option to step into their 23

At the moment, the Bulldogs have picks 35 & 47 - maybe one of those is enough for GWS to agree to a trade for O’Halloran or maybe they'll be looking for a bit more for a player under contract

This is where Geelong can step in with a sweetner on the Smith deal, "We know we started with a 1st round pick but GWS is asking for a bit more for O’Halloran and maybe we can help you out. How about we throw a 2nd round pick into the mix, which you can then send to GWS for you're guy and you can send us back a 3rd round pick to go with Smith" - helps us all out to sign our wanted players

At the end of the days, trades aren't exactly done in isolation - Clubs are always looking at what others are doing and the impact it'll have on them. In reality, we're not discussing the fantasy trades of other clubs, we're simply reporting what else is happening, as it could easily have an impact on our approach

When was Oliver busted for drugs or is that just rumour? Not fair to throw that around if its just speculation.

You've got the provisional draft order stickied. It more than covers it.

I think a part of it is they are terrified also of the embarrassment and poor look on their club and culture if they did trade Oliver our and he comes out for geelong and is playing superstar footy.

Can you imagine their fans crying out “what is wrong with Melbourne” and saying poor culture terrible run place etc etc with the contrast??

I imagine that is a big part of it, the fear and backlash if geelong fix him with the questions that would follow of Melbourne.

Nobody likes their flaws being highlighted, and this feels like it could massively turn on Melbourne if we did get him right.

I feel they probably want to perservervw with him until it’s apparent he is “broken” in a physically tuned sense and beyond getting right elsewhere.

Two years of mental health fitness issues and lack of commitment would probably deconditioning on him at his age to that point by then.

Anticipating 17 + 38 for Smith + 47.

Dogs can argue they got early teens ‘equivalent’ for Smith which is about right and is theoretically better than our original pick 15 by itself.

Both teams can manage optics that they had to adjust the trade given the afl surprised everyone by giving 8 to StK for Battle and pushed our R1 pick back, etc.

Then by the time bids come at draft, 17 turns into early 20s - so it’s ultimately ok for us anyway, and at the time the trade was done, all parties get to save a little face and get Smith to the Cats.

Also has the side benefit of retaining maximum flexibility for next year’s picks if something continues to bubble away, or we want to trade back in to this year’s round 1 on draft night.

Well spoken. I'm not prepared to be chasing other boards info when I could see it here. I'm interested in what a few of our Draft Experts have to say.

Watch Melbourne reprimand and fine Clayton $5k for meeting with Geelong just to make themselves look even dumber!!!

Sure- but it’s not surprising. Wouldn’t we do the same?
I hope he gets himself back into some decent form. He’s a good footballer.

Is a real difficult one for Melbourne to manage now because they can't threaten to trade him out. Other players they can take a line that if they don't meet a standard then "no one's forcing you to be here".

What incentive does Oliver have now to tow the line for the coaching group? Or meet standards? They'll pay him more than I think any other player on their list and they just made him bigger than thr club.

They've treated him like something stuck to the sole of their shoe..... he'll have no intense love for the jumper, no drive to play for the jumper.....if he plays there next year it'll strictly be a business transaction whereby he'll present at the workplace, just do his thing, and collect his pay at the end of each week.

His incentive to excel as a representative of the MFC has all but been extinguished you'd think. A very awkward situation.

Is it Smith you're looking for?

And they have 6 years of it to go.

I think he's a solid partial solution. That's why I think we would be doing ourselves a massive disservice trading out our future first. We'll need it to trade next year

We won't trade our future 1st for him.
