Rumour GFC 2025 Player Trading, Drafting FA, Rumours and Wish lists Pt 1

Freo not happy considering we got him due to the rule change … they certainly would have taken him /matched if tehy could have

There was an interview with Humphries and Edwards when they were drafted which went to show how much of a rort the NGA was.

They asked Humphries about his background and he could say he was from x people from y area, then they asked Edwards the same question and he was basically just like NFI mate. Guy was playing football regardless of any academy.

How many NGA acad kids actually are from a non footy background. And all do it ..its just a matter of how lucky you are. The two acad players we have this year would both probably play footy so the academy idea is spurious … but , just like every club… if we get a good one or two then one may as ride the gift horse. Just like FSon.

I don't mind that Freijah at Doggies... Good late recruit that one.

Him or a Darcy Wilson would've been great on our list.

Agreed. But I'd say our 2023 draft went pretty well, wouldn't you? -

Pick 11: Connor O'Sullivan (Rising Star nom, and looks likely to be Best 23 this year)
Pick 32: Mitch Edwards (scope is high, but still yet to play)
Pick 36: Shaun Mannagh (locked Best 23 already)
Pick 58: George Stevens (huge improvement and one of the best in our VFL game on the weekend)
Pick 61: Ollie Wiltshire (emergency in our AFL side already)
Pick 63: Lawson Humphries (locked Best 23 already)

3 Best 23 players, an AFL emergency, and two players with promise. Shit not bad for a draft with only 1 first rounder. Freijah or Wilson would be nice, but can't have 'em all :)

Silly question regarding NGA players:
  • I know we selected Ted Clohesy as a CatB rookie under the NGA criteria
  • Was his older brother same also eligible as an NGA selection for us, because I don't recall hearing about him until after we drafted Ted
I don't think they live in they Geelong region when his older brother was draft age, parents are teachers i think, moved around from school to school? don't know that he ever looked draft able enough for them to lodge paperwork anyway

With stacks of development still to go for plenty of these players, this looks like being another amazing draft haul for the GFC.

It's not like we're the only ones out there trying to nail the draft each time. 17 other clubs are going hard at picking up quality contributors every year as well. On that basis, to have three players already from this group who look likely to play important roles in the senior team for years to come is yet more 'stellar Wells' for mine.

And I think it's quite likely Edwards (and maybe even Wiltshire) make it as well.

It's amazing we ended the year with one first rounder and gave up Sav to get all that

The story of Mack 'stubbornly and stupidly' holding out for the entire trade period to secure the pick that brought us Laws is just about the best trade/draft yarn ever. What a ridiculous waste of time and energy it was to spend all that time holding out for some junk pick that was never going to produce anything of note.

Oh, wait...

It's kind of ridiculous how good our drafting has been. We get handed nothing, and we still keep finding absolute gems. Doggies and Sydney are pretty good at that too.

Agree on Wiltshire and Edwards. Based on the VFL game on the weekend, I'm starting to think Stevens might make it too. Has really worked on his tank, shed the kilos, and looks fitter and quicker than he did. If all 6 worked out, that would rival our extraordinary 2016 draft, IMO.

Fun fact, 22 out of our named 26 have been drafted in 2016 or afterwards:

2016 -

Bowes*
T. Stewart
J. Henry
Z. Guthrie
O'Connor

2017 -

Miers
Stengle*

2018 -

B. Smith*
T. Atkins

2019 -

SDK
Close

2020 -

Holmes
O. Henry*
S. Neale

2021 -

Knevitt
Dempsey

2022 -

Clark
Clohesy
Mullin

2023 -

C. O'Sullivan
L. Humphries
Wiltshire

  • T. Kelly, J. Clark traded, who are Top 10 players at their new clubs
  • Mannagh, Conway, who have played AFL games (Mannagh Best 23)
* (denotes trade in from another club/SSP)

Only Danger, Jez, Blics and Duncan, are from before 2016. Remarkable turnover.

And you can also add Esava, Fogarty, Fort, Narkle and Evans, who are all still considered at least decent senior prospects at their current clubs.

When you really take some time to consider it in detail, the Wells statue is actually a cause that Sam Kekovich should have been championing for years.

That’s a bad assumption there’s lots of reason why an indigenous person wouldn’t specifically know what people he comes from…it’s just as bad as the assumption that indigenous people have to be a darker colour

Ben Rongdit our NGA kid who is ranked to go late first/early second round is a medium sized back (183cm which is more on the smaller side) who can play taller than his height as he’s athletic enough or can play on smaller guys as he has pace. Long arms too.
But the big key here is he’s fast enough to play on Star small forwards which has always been a weakness for us.

Andrew McGrath for example is a genuine back pocket.
He’s 180cm and 83kg so probably similar to how Rongdit will fill out.

We may have finally found our smaller defender replacement for Bews that we’ve been looking for,

20/40 games in the VFL , pushing some def attributes and considering needs , he might be one of the lucky types where the games has come to him. I saw him play in that u17 game. Did something amazing then followed it up with a bad mistake… but he looks athletically gifted.

The other kid ..Mellor..(not sure on spelling) .. if he is any sort of a mid then we might finally be on a winner (although he probably is less rated.

Our FSons look late rated too. I see that Cam Mooneys boy is sub 190 …. I thought sons were meant to be taller than their fathers… yet Billys boy and now Cams boy are probably Mid size.

How many spots will we have ?
