In your leaving stratford post mayhem, from afar there seems to be alot of reasons that benefit you. Stratford aren't gaining any benefit from your loss. If your form was a worry you would play seconds until the end of the year, then put a clearance in?? This way a better seperation would occur. Leaving mid year and mid game always looks bad. That is my opinion anyway.

Stratford aren't gaining anything from me staying there either. If I am going to leave at the end of the year, what difference is it going to make if I do stay and play out the year in the seconds? What do Stratford gain by having someone play in their seconds who both parties know is going to not be there the next year.

Stratford have made it fairly clear to me that they do not need a number 1,2 or 3 in the batting order as they have those spots filled. I agree with the decisions that have been made on this front. Sam Howden is a talented young kid who works very hard on his game and deserves an opportunity to improve himself by batting up the order. Trav Millar is a Stratty born and bred product who is loaded with talent and hasn't quite nailed down a spot in the line up. His results at the top of the order so far have justified the decision. I'd also like to think that Nugget Anstee deserves a shot to bat higher in the order, and again, would currently be in front of me in the precking order. Last weekend, if I had have played for Stratford, I would have batted at 9, now, that is not really going to help me find form with the bat. I was always told that I am playing in the side as a bowler and not as a batsman. When Stratford have 4 good quality seamers, plus a GCL spinner in the their side, you don't have to be Einstein to work out that leaves me as, at best, the number 6 bowler.

The other thing that I did not mention, as I thought it was unnecessary, was that my wife is due to have a baby in January. If I was playing in the seconds by that stage, which is a strong possibility, I don't think I would be bothered driving to Stratty twice a week to train, and on weekends to play when I have a young baby at home who I hardly see during the week because I work fairly long hours when required. As it is, due to work, I currently turn up to training late at different times, this would only be made harder with a young baby in the equation. If my form dictates that I am going to be playing second XI cricket, I would rather be doing it 15 minutes closer to home at Sale, and I probably wouldn't bother training twice a week, which again, isn't going to help me find form.

So, lets break down the benefits to me of leaving:
- I get to continue playing 1st XI cricket (in the short term, and hopefully my form turns around and I get to stay there), at a club where I have played 130 1st XI games and nearly 200 senior games in total, as opposed to driving to Stratford to be a passenger in 1st XI games, or play in 2nd XI games.
- Hopefully, I get the chance to bat at the top of the order, and this coupled with batting at Sale Oval every second game (I have grown up cricketwise on this wicket), helps me to find some form.

The question I pose to you is, what is the benefit to Stratford if I had have stayed there for the rest of the year, and what do Stratford lose by me leaving?

Personally, I don't think they lose anything, as I have stated, I have performed very poorly for them, so, playing wise, I am no loss at all. I am not viewed as a leader or anything of the sort there, so, they don't lose anything on field from me going. The only thing that they really lose is me purchasing $5 worth of raffle tickets each Thursday and Saturday and 2 or 3 powerades each time I'm there.

As far as what they would have gained by me staying, it is one more 2nds player to help them fill numbers. I guess in reality, having an older guy play in the 2nds with some of their younger players may benefit those younger players, however, as stated previously, within the club, I am not viewed as a leader, or "senior player", so to speak, so, it is not really a major issue. They also have a good core of senior players within their seconds and one more older player wouldn't have much of an impact, I wouldn't think. I guess potentially, I should be able to impact the result of a few games in the seconds, but, if I play say 6 seconds games, and help to win 2/3 of them, what real benefit do they get from that in the long run?

I'd love to hear your thoughts on why exactly I should have waited until the end of the year. The mid game thing, I can understand, and I have apologised to Stratford for that. Unfortunately, the circumstances within that game are what made me come to my final decision, and I am a very honest and open person, so, I made the decision to inform Stratford as soon as I came to a decision. I could have waited until Saturday night/Sunday to let them know, however, if I had have done that, I would have had to lie my way through the second weekend of the game. I made the decision to inform them, and they made the decision to ask me not to bat in the game, I can perfectly understand their decision. If I had have not said anything, then been involved in a run out or something of the sort, it would have looked pretty suss when I announced after the game that I was leaving.

RIP-John Mayman @ Stratford
2008-2009

The black swan that turned a shade of red

Remebered for his batting nude in the rooms, tipping cool lime cruisers in a hat and being part of the victorious six a side team of 2009.

In John's defence stratford asked him not to play the second week, i am a good friend of John's and am dissapointed with his decision and timing of it. Personally if John wasn't going to play ones cricket his worth is almost none.

I have heard his reasons. I accepted them and moved on. People have to remeber that John gave his all and always wanted the best for stratford. He helped secure Jie Van Berkel (imo the best thing that has ever happened in the last ten years at stratford) and implementing Dream Team (which has developed a better player culture).

I understand why John is "disliked" by some people, but this is mainly due to John being; A, 24/7 cricketing nut. B, an extrovert. C, likes to talk (therefore if you talk heaps invaraibly you will say something that someone dislikes) and D, one of the most recognisable players in Sale-Maffra due to his physical attributes.

People choose to mock John and dwell on all of his negatives because he is an easy target (as outlined above). But he has alot of positives that aren't seen by alot of people at first glance.

He has always been upfront about telling the truth and what he believes in, choosing not to hide behind anything. I commend him for doing this and wearing any consequences that come from that.

After all cricket is a game, its not life. John will move on and Stratford Cricket Club will move on from this. It might just take a little time for the latter to happen.

Mayhem, your being very negative!! Your only one innings away from being in from again!! My point is that if you leave mid season you never never give your self a chance at being a success!! Because you have never known what would have happened!!

Unfortunately Gus, it has been 15 innings I have played for Stratty in which I have failed in every one, with a highest score of 39 and only 2 scores over 20. I think it is proven that I can only bat in 1 spot, and that is at the top of the order, or, that I am just no good anymore (possibly, never was any good, just got lucky!)

I think Wurruk have a few key players that we need to be worried about ie Holliday, Gleeson, Campbell and Wrigglesworth. I believe that all them four players are dangerous and need to be contained. They also get good support from Aaron Lynch who bowls well. Personally this is the best side on paper that they have put on the park this year.

They are a far more dangerous side than people give them credit for, and don't rely as heavily on Ian now.

Jack is the star at Stratford and has made the most runs by a fair way but his bowling has been average. We haven't made enough runs as a team bar Rosedale-Kilmany, surprisngly we have four batsmen in the top twenty runscorers but only two with fifties (jack and myself). This suggests to me that we have thrown our wickets away/not continued on with our innings when we are "in". We just need everyone to contribute to our innings to be more succesful.

Our bowling is a bit of a concern but i am backing our quicks tommorow/next week without Jie to make headways into Wurruk. The track at Stratford looks likely to offer some assitance to Simon Williams, Tom Hams, Luke Maguire and Jack Tatterson.

New club, top of the order, same result

A big effort from College over the weekend. To play the top side and roll them for 50 was huge.
Mark Nicholls in good form with 5 for 20 and
Stuart Anderson 10 overs 4 for 7 - Amazing!

Anthony Hurley in the book for sledging - While he was batting. Shows the passion from the big fella!!

Couple of good performances with the ball over the weekend.

Probably just confirms that there is no standout side in the league this year, and that most of the top 4 or 5 sides are going to be capable of beating each other.

I'm not sure that being reported whilst batting for sledging can be wholly and solely put down to passion.

Conditions suited bowling, due to rain around on Friday night, most of the wickets would have been covered, and possibly greened up a little, and it was muggy and overcast and suited swing bowling as well. The wicket at Sale was hard, had good pace and carry and a there was a little sideways movement of the wicket as well. I know in our game, we didn't get any rain during the day (well, not enough to stop play, only about 3 patches of 5 minute drizzle, which didn't even get your hair wet), however, I believe the game at Stratty had a couple of rain delays, so, they obviously get a bit more rain than we did.

No wrong!!!

Different result!!!

Mayhem took two catches!!

Hahahahahahaha:D

At stratford, the wicket didn't play two bad. Three leapt for the day, with one getting a wicket. The ball was shagged and didn't swing and the wicket played pretty slow. The fact Wurruk were missing there most compact player didn't help either as he would have been hard to dismiss.

Running out Ian Wrigg was handy too...

Bundy picking Nathan King for the second week!! Considering you can pick the winner most times after the first week, this was a strange move. he is a champion player but now he can't influence the first innings result. You are really taking a gamble hoping you bat or bowl really well on the first week. I don't think breaking average when you are playing ten does justice to picking someone to play the second week especially when you can't pick a non bowler/batsman.

I'm not a big believer in one week players, as it is such an unknown as to what you will or won't do on the day, that it is a big risk.

I am not a massive fan of sledging people, I think it shows a percieved weakness and lack of faith in your own ability.

I am not saying i haven't done it but most of the times it has happened because people have deserved it. Ie acting ridiculous, for humorous pruposes, cheating or personal.

I am sure Anthony sledges and only has sledged for the past 20 years because of his lack of ability??????????????? 3 MOM in Grand Finals, Vic Country, 20 years at Country week and so on and so on. i don't think he sledges because of his lack of ability. By the way, he only sledged on the return. They spoke and he didn't like the idea of certen individuals making comments. He is not reported only in the book as a warning.

the funniest thing said was him returning comment

Bundy player - U should have stayed retired last year.
Hurls - i would have, if you hadn't of dropped Burgiel that cost us the final!

cricket is great because of this type of banter!! I am sure no one would of taken offence to such a comment!

The personal insults go to far but stuff like that is great. i have been on the end of some rippers and never care. Everything i have ever sledges allows me to still have a beer after the game in the opposition rooms without guilt.

And Nuggett, you and your side gave plenty when we played each other earlier in the year.

Classic sledge at the top there.

I played in the game in question, and I don't recall any sledging whatsoever? Although, I did spend half of the day at deep midwicket, so, I may have missed it.

Warrior, my post is not in reference to the big bear. As i think he is a wonderful cricketer with a distinguished career. He is nearing the end of his career though and playing against him I know he seeks out any advantage he can using any means possible. Anthony uses sledging to get the best out of himself and the team, he is extremely competitive and believes in playing hard.

My post is reference to other nanagoats that sledge for the reasons i have said. I won't say the example i would use to reference my post as it will make me look like i love myself.

This year, sledging??? The last time I said anything to someone was in last years semi final. I have given one send off this year and that was too a maffra player. I have made no comments this year bar the banter that we had when you were batting in which i was mocking you and gilligan in comparing your "saga' to Carey v Stevens, to which you replied with a funny comment (I won't put it on here hendo:D)

If your talking in reference to Gilligan, he does this every game. He does not know how to shut up and most of his comments are either a, ridiculously bad or b, that no one can understand him talking because he is unfit.

By the way returning sledging and general banter is fine, i think i said this in my post.

Windies are a joke. They would not beat any of the states at full strength (maybe SA and Queensland). Even Hauritz taking wickets (lol) and making runs.

John Holland got 5 for 9 yesterday in district. Get him in the state side ffs. Bryce McGain is an old man. He had his chance in South Africa and got carted to all corners. He will never play for Australia again. Get someone in who will.

Hauritz is a much better bowler than he was 2 years ago. Look at what he has done in last 12 months in all forms of the game, we are never going to get another shane warne but hauritz is doing everything asked of him. Bowls tight, takes a few wickets, can bat a bit and good in the field.

Cant drop mcgain on what he has done for the vics in first 2 games. Took 6-7 wickets in the first shield game i think.

Windies are poo, queensland pumped them and were not full strength, they would not beat SA either. George from SA a bowler to watch, will play for Australia in next couple of years.
