Is it 8 episodes? Apparently tomorrow night is the final heat according to the TV guide. So that should be 6?
Assumed 8 for 8 quarter finalists. But just guessing. That would be a huge blessing if next one is the last 🤣

Their episode numbers are a bit weird.

6 heats. 3 quarter finals according to my TV guide. So I am guessing there will be a lucky loser for the semi finals? Otherwise don’t know how they will do it with 3 contestants.

Hang Tough and Tilt coming in on Monday, then Whiplash and Edge later in the week.

Watching first ep of the UK version. How did Channel 10 balls up the Aussie one so much?
Combination of programming and in-show decisions.

Programming
  • 60 min vs 90 min episode length. Ch10 made their episodes far too long, resulting in too much dead time.
  • 1 vs 3-4 episodes per week. Gladiators is not a human drama type show, which works well when stripped across multiple nights. Too much of a good thing is not good at all.
In-Show
  • Fake crowd noise. If they had an audience when the show was recorded, then they should have shown them. In their absence, dubbing crowd noises just screams "fake".
  • Hosts. Nobody likes Beau Ryan, who is slightly less appealing than a dog turd.
  • Games. Repeating the same games for every heat, and showing the heats on back-to-back-to-back nights, is boring.
The sad thing is that none of these decisions require the benefit of hindsight, to know that things were going to get ugly. Every last one of them was foreseeable before they even started filming.

Gladiators is a good show (not great, but definitely enjoyable) - but Ch10 have murdered the execution and made it unwatchable.

The crowd and music definitely plays a big part in the atmosphere and show being better.

I've only watched 1 ep so far and was hoping they wouldn't repeat the games. I also feel like the eliminator in UK is the same as the old one and the Aussie one is just bits and pieces of it plus the pyramid.

The UK gladiators also feel like actual gladiators. The face painting in the Aussie one is crazy.

That's probably the one disappointment from the UK version. They brought back their original theme but didn't bring back the original music for the games. A minor issue in comparison to the issues with the Channel 10 version, and I'm sure the BBC will rectify this in season 2.

Tilt?

They canned that event in the OG UK version when a couple of Gladiators had serious injuries.

I was glad we got Hang Tough today, but I can't believe we've had 6 first round matches, and we're going go have 3 quarter find matches, and we're not going to see Gauntlet. It's got to me the most iconic, easiest to set up game that they haven't run yet.

Slingshot was silly when their bunjee cords would send the balls flying everywhere at the first contest, but I always thought that was fun as well. And I liked Suspension Bridge as an alternative to Duel, the bridge added another dimension to it.
