FTA-TV Gladiators returning to TV

Was at the dome today (ess v geel) and those stupid blow up advertising clappers with the gladiators logo were distributed.
During the warm up there was a channel 7 camera crew getting crowd shots, you know the like...cute kids with their faces painted and so on. Well the camera crew set up in front of a bunch of kids, and kids being kids, did their thing, waved their footy scarves and banners, cheered on their teams because....they WERE at the FOOTY!.
The camera man promptly told them to put down the scarves and banners, and up came the blow up gladiator clappers. Not 3 seconds later the little red light on the camera went on. Cross promotion at its finest.
This show was canned years ago because its pathetic....unfortunately it seems channel 7 will go to no lengths to cross promote, build up and push this pile of cr@p 2nd time round and kids at the footy are at the front line for 7.

Agreed.

And that Viper is so lame. "You have been viporised" and hisses. How stupid.

Hunter's little "interruption" worked well, and Thunder came off pretty well. But stuff like Viper's canned, unnatural response needs to be gotten rid of. Fortunately Tatiana Grigorithingy could actually string a couple of words together - the contrast between the two after that game was clear.

FANTASTIC RETURN!

some of it was a bit silly, which made me cringe, but it went alright

"you have been viperised"???

Tom Williams in general

Thunder's comment about making most women speechless :D pure gold that one

it seemed a lot more edited than 10 or so years ago (maybe that is just the way i remember it), but it went alright.

loved it!

Another thing i havn't had confirmed by more than a few people is that the show is staged from the get go is that the action itself is scripted. What they do is, they'll film the game in one go.... but if the 'conclusion' isn't to their liking, they'll film it again... even to the point of changing the finish to the match - to get a better camera angle of it etc (making it sound like wrestling... but essentially what i understand is that the show is just as scripted).

Survivor (amongst others) does lots of takes with stand-in actors to get all their long shots of challenges "in progress" after the actual event. I'd be amazed if Gladiators got everything in one take.

Great first episode. Thunder will be most people's favourite and did well. Kouta also performed better than I thought he would. Outlaw was great on Pyramid until he got penalised. Would've liked to have seen more of Scar and Tank too. The male challenger who won was very impressive. Could see him winning the whole thing. The female challengers did ok but the gladiators were too good.

To the person who said most gladiators fans who went to the tapings were disappointed, I'd like to know where you got that impression. From what I've read most people loved it, although didn't want to set their expectations too high.

Once the Gladiators get more experience their interviews should be better.

I dont like the name Kouta as a gladiator. It does have the ring that the other gladiators have. I would have thought Zeus would have suited him for a name of a gladiator.

I reckon "Barry" has a pretty awesome ring to it.

If you lasted the first 10 minutes you were doing well. Utterly cringeworthy.

Actually I am suprised they didn't go for Adonis instead of Kouta, whenever he played he was known as the Adonis as he was the perfect form of a player and a man.

Adonis is also a good Gladiator name.

BTW I missed the show as I completely forgot it was on, anyone know if it will be shown again on anything?

Too much safety equipment IMO. Get rid of the helmets. If someone goes for the face then they deserve to win.

Also, that "penalty" was rubbish. He was on the second step going onto the third when he got tackled. They just wanted to show off.

It was kinda lame. But I suppose something as theatrical as Gladiators is intended to be a bit lame. I'm not sure if the 90s version of the show was as lame as this (it probably was but I was too young to notice).

I can't say I'll be making a note to watch future episodes. If the show doesn't get cancelled before the finals I'll probably watch them though.

P.S. Gauntlet was my least favourite challenge in the 90s and that's the one the ****ers did first :p
