I think goal umpires simply must learn to relax. The rest of the problems will take care of themselves. A simple case of "fight and flight". The goal umpire got nervous and everything went blurry for him.
Note that the boundary umpire had a perfect view of what happened in the background.
Looking at the field umpire, even he would have had a pretty good view of what happened also.
We already have 4 boundary umpires in order to help out the goal umpire. This was a perfect opportunity to make use of the extra person.
It seems that all the AFL umpires are too scared to use common sense. Knowing the reason why this is so, I actually empathise with the AFL group of umpires for such a sad state of affairs.
