My top 5.

1. Queensland gold,,, The Gold. reminds you of coolangatta gold and allows you to relocate if the gold coast becomes pyrytes. Also queensland lets you logically ply some games at the gabba and give a country v capital feel to local derbies/ Queenslanf and gold are strong words coast perhaps is not unless they are 'east coast' something

2. Crockhunters ... Crocs, Hunters... tap into the steve irwin thing - get piece of Bindi (everyone else has)

3. Bears - still a lot of love for it

4. bushturkeys (only kidding god they are messy things !)

5. Most radical dont have one - let one evolve as many current ones have. lets face it the eagles is the only decent artificial one. Gold coast football club or 'the golds' or 'the coasters'

While one eventuates make money in the meantime by sponsor association - wet and wild, lethal weapon, etc etc changew week to week or year to year.

Just thought if they are gold could they align with Ballarat and get some affilliation with the goldfields, grow some victorian support

Don't mind the Marlins name myself. Also like the stingrays as a second option, but the others are just shithouse.

Decided to mock-up some Marlins designs:

Nice jumper outside the mascot - both clash with hawks though

Thanks for the Seinfeld reference. Probably the best thing that could come out of 5 very ordinary name choices.

I'd go with the "Gold Coast Marlins".

Although "Gold Coast Stingrays" sound better, have you ever actually seen a good Stingray logo used for a mascot for a sporting club? The odd diamond shape of those things and the location of its face/mouth makes it tricky to come up with a logo design that looks anything threatening. MLB's Tampa Bay Devil Rays had a small ray on the left of its original logo which looked more like a black square....in the current logo they haven't even bothered putting the ray on there. The "Gold Coast Stingrays" gridiron club (as people have said, might be a hurdle for the AFL to overcome in terms of TM if they want 'Stringrays') go a bit obscure with their logo, using an American Football for the body of the ray with the barb tail coming out of it, which is a bit of a cop out just to only show the tail. There might still be some Queensland sensitivies regarding Steve Irwin to use the Stingrays mascot in national sporting competition, as has been mentioned too.

Atleast with the Marlin, you can have it jumping out of the water showing its teeth in anger, perhaps use the Florida Marlins logo as inspiration, but with more menace.

Can't see it being anything other than Stingrays from that lot... Marlins is an outsider but those names are just disgraceful.

GC Chiefs was my one, wasn't the best but would've been better than the craptacular ideas the marketing gurus up north have come up with.

I think they should be called the "Retirees". That would appeal to the most Gold Coast residents.

Or if they want to have a real marketing coup, they should called themselves the "Tourists".

If they want to strike fear into the hearts of the local people, perhaps they should call themselves the "Crown of Thorns Starfish".

Oh man I love your avatar! That logo kicks ass! I just made a basic one to show where a sponsor would go. Been using it for a while now for clubs not in the AFL.

How about the Gold Coast Latex?:p

I am so over it. Out of all the names on the GC17 site, they come up with those choices as the shortlist of 5. FFS

Only Marlins I could live with, and that jersey above is promisingly different to anything else. Its logo design and colours are acceptable.

I can't be bothered reading through the previous pages to this one, but I offer that only an AFL raconteur like coach Mark Williams will be able to pull this new club out of the hat, whether its Carrara, Gabba or Nerang or Robina.

What a schemozzle! No logo name, no colours, no home ground, no coach, no prospective players as yet.

What's this bit about FIVE names? There are only FOUR! The name 'Rays' will be connected with stingrays anyhow ie. 'Roos / Kangaroos, 'Pies / Magpies, 'Dees / Demons, 'Dogs / Bulldogs ...... hello!! IMHO :

Ironmen - is another sport - may aswell call them the Rugbys!
Guards - is too vague and not very marketable.
Marlins - is a wonderful name and I hope it has a chance.
Stingrays (aka 'Rays & Stingers) - fabulous - relevent & marketable.

Gold Coast Guards

There, that is their silly marketing ploy in relation to that name.

They're the Coast Guards!

What a joke.

Well, did try to sniff around for a decent Stingrays sporting club logo. Found some semi-pro gridiron club from Florida, decent logo I guess.

Excellent work. Possibility for a logo. Only problem is that this is the same name logo as for the GC regional U/18 team, plus a GC gridiron team. Does GC actually have stingrays in amongst all that pounding surf? Possibly in its northern reaches sheltered by Sth Stradbroke Is, but there it would have dugongs and turtles too.

Gold Coast Dugongs. Any gongs? Gold Coast Turtles? :D

What would be the most fitting reward for these marketeers and their top 5 GC names? A Solomon elbow, or a Barry Hall ko?

Rays all over the place, especially in the canals.

Lots of sharks around too.

The way I see it the GC could be named anything it wants with the GC name or the inclusion of AFC . It seems the problem exists because the consortium is looking ahead at marketing and this is where it has to traverse trademarks etc . Let's say the club was the Goldcoast Sharks . The team could run out onto the field quite easily . There are no other GC Sharks running around on a football field , however if you tried selling (GC) Sharks appareil then you'd be up against clothing competitors etc etc .Freo has to be called the Freo Dockers and cannot be shortened to Dockers , because there is a clothing company selling Dockers trousers .

.

Cos, because of that USA clothing company, Fremantle cannot be known on any team lists (or singly) as just 'Dockers' as this infringes that company's trademark on the name.

So 'Dockers' will always be just their unofficial logo. Contrast that to the Hawks as their official logo, with the name of the club as Hawks - not Hawthorn- on the design.

Some clubs have both their football club and logo (in word) on their team badge. Some just have the picture of their logo.

It all adds up in marketing, just ask the Kangaroos- sorry now North Melbourne- again. The stronger you make the logo, the stronger the merchandising.

PS Gold Coast is famous for its beaches, not its canals.*#!
