Now it's starting to look like a UFO to me

That's the issue with it. It has a lot of different symbology and iconography embedded in it, but in a really abstract way. It's like looking at a magic eye picture... sometimes you see an S, sometimes you see a cricket ball, sometimes you see a sun, sometimes you see a football but never all at once. Like a magic eye picture, you just end up a little fatigued and bleary eyed. It's irritating and obnoxious. A logo shouldn't be a puzzle.

They should have used the logo redesign as an opportunity to make gold and blue their main colours.

It was silly for GC to pick red when so many teams already have it.

And what could be more Gold Coast than gold for the sand/sun and blue for the water.

Fantastic idea if it weren't for the fact that another team use those colours already, and for the same reason you list as well.
